I'm really into RPG's, I'm working on my fourth final fantasy (7-10). I am going to definately play ff3 when I get finished with ten, at the mt. gagazet seymor. But I was wondering, what were the best RPGs out there. Important aspects for me are difficulty, storyline, and character attachment. Any ideas would be wonderful.
One more point that I think is important, but doesn't really fit anywhere else is why didn't rockstar hold off on the game (vice city) for one more month and fix a few of these bugs. It's pretty odd driving across a bridge and then for a split second you see nothing but water ahead and then go back to the bridge. I know how large this game is, and it is a very fun game, but a few more tests would have been apreciated.

Well, judging by your criteria, you should try the following, in no particular order.

Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, the Phantasy Star series (especially Phantasy Star 4), the Suikoden series (especially Suikoden 2), and Persona 2.

What the hell, I'll give this a go.

I think Rockstar felt it was important to get their game out first for the holiday shopping season. I know that with all the hype going into that, SD4, and Metroid Prime, if they had come out closer together, I don't know where I would have thrown my $50.

Now I can go back and play more Animal Crossing

Renegade,Mistress of Darkness says:

Definetly get Chrono Trigger, but skip out on Chrono Cross (it's easy, not enough character development AND the story isn't long enough). I liked the Breath of Fire series. Don't forget about Phantasy IV either. And I hear Lunar is a good game (haven't played it yet to confirm it).

Don't skip the earlier FF's either.

Chrono Trigger is very good, and I DO recommend Chrono Cross. Lunar: Silver Star Story and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue are gods among RPGs. By your criteria, these would probably be two of the best buys you could make. Any Final Fantasy, but particularly 6 and to a lesser extent 4 (you might know them as 3 and 2). Definitely Xenogears if you can find it. The Suikoden series (especially 2) is really fun and the story is great. The two Tales of Destiny games are pretty fun as well, and Thousand Arms is a fun little game that's different from a lot of other RPGs. I also highly recommend Valkyrie Profile. It's a blast to play the battles and has a fun storyline, albiet little character development. If you are also interested is more strategy-like RPGs, I highly recommend both Brigandine and Final Fantasy Tactics.

The 16-bit Dragon Quest/Warrior games are really good too, especially 6. Number 7 is an exercise in tedious frustration, but if you LIKE that in a game, go for it.
Darklands for the PC deserves an honorable mention as well.
Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore suck.
I hate Xenogears, because there's less of an emphasis on actualy PLAYING the god-damn game and watching some t e x t s l o w l y c r a w l a c r o s s t h e s c r e e n.
On the other hand, you get to fight in giant robots.
Final Fantasy VI/3 blows for character development.
If you're into emulation, www.qualityroms.com will take care of you.
Have fun!

Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore.....not my taste although I did beat both and have the Mana OST. Pound for Pound my favorite RPG is Xenogears. A miracle considering I am turned off by Mech games and it's ilk. Waiting for that American version of Xenogears this March. And at $19.99 don't anybody sleep on Dragon Warrior VII for PS1.

Dragon Warrior 1 was good for its time, but I can't get into it anymore, nor its sequels. And Illusion of Gaia's pretty underrated, as is Soul Blazer (top 10 RPG for the SNES, maybe alltime).

Other than that, BoromirMark's list is pretty much right.

Did someone mention RPG's? Well I'll toss out my own personal Top 5.... well, 6.

5) (Tied), Final Fantasy X and Zelda 64 (O of T). Two games that helped bring RPG's to the 'next generation'. Sick stories and slick controls.

3) (Tied), Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI. Both great games to play. One has a unique game mechanic system, the other was one of the best all-around RPG's ever. TO get both for a bargin price on the PSone (Final Fantasy Antholigies) is a great thing.

2) Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past. The game that brought me to RPG's has a special place in my mind. Even if it was just another game it'd still be my pick for number two.

1) Chrono Trigger. IMHO, Best. Game. Ever. Follow the link to see why.

If you like strategy RPG's, try the Shining Force Games. 3 is probably the best, but unless you read Japanese and import 3-b and 3-c, it'll leave you hanging. 1 is great just for the fact that the characters develop at a random rate, so your invincible fighter the first game through might blow the second time through. Guntz will rock no matter what though.

Vai and SHining the Holy Arc are good. Arc the Lad is good. The Alundra games never get enough love. Dragon Force eats away your life. Castlevania: SotN has a lot of RPG-ish elements and is considered one of the greatest games ever made.

Best ever award would have to depend on how turn-based or action based you want your game. Turn-based = tie Final Fantasy IV/Chrono Trigger. Action-based = Zelda: Link to the Past. Best Story I'd say goes to Lunar. Most Original goes to Persona.

Sorry if most of these games are for dead systems but PS2 is just getting started with the RPG goodness and X-Box and Gamecube aren't even trying yet.

I don't mind, I like to know for all systems. If I don't have the particular system, I might look into it if I have the spare coin. I have played Chrono Trigger, but never had the chance to finish it. I know what is important to me, and thanks for all the response, but what do you guys find important when you play. I guess I like to get attached to the characters, because it makes you want to get through their journey and find out the truth. And I'm about to take on the Sanctuary Keeper.

Get Lunar: SSS then. Eternal Blue is good too, but the characters in SSS are my all time favorites. When that game first came out, I resolved to speak only in the voice of Ghalleon, the coolest villain ever. That didn't last long, but I've based at least 3 or so D&D characters on the guy.

Not to mention the packaging on these games which is super swank. You get the game, cloth map, hardcover instruction book, soundtrack CD, and a making-of disc.

I pretty much like the same things you said, good storlyine, good character development (I also like having a lot of character), and difficulty. In my opinion the game with the best mix of the three is FF3. There were plenty of characters in it and they were all developed pretty well and since I think it took like 80 hours or something (for me atleast) that makes it a pretty difficult game.

I'd say second is probably Chrono Trigger, then Xenogears. I also liked Legend of Dragoon.

Both Shinig Forces (i've only played 1 and 2) and Suikodens (also only played 1 and 2) have great storylines and lots of characters, but doesn't really do a great job of developing them all (although in Suikoden there's like 100 characters so how can you possibly have time for all of them). And they are also much MUCH easier games.

I also like the original Dragon Warrior because it's what got me started on rpgs, but I've gone back and played it since then and MAN, it is SO SLOW, you have to build up your experience for like days to move on to the next thing.

Both Suikoden games have 108 characters to collect, although not all of them are playable (you can find shop keepers and farmers as well as fighters). I recently got all 108 in Suikoden 2, took almost 70 hours. Well worth it, considering you can only get the good ending if you have all 108. A lot of the best characters are also the hardest to get, like Mazus and Pesmerga (not that you can't get by with other people, or that the hardest to find are the only good ones). So if you get into the Suiko games, I highly recommend dong as much as you can.

Did anyone mention Shadowrunner for the SNES? I suppose that could be considered a RPG. That has to be one of my favorite games for the system.
That's another game that they need to remake/sequel.

I'm midway through Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (PC version, an Xbox port exists). Setting aside its wide variety of technical problems (which I started a different thread about -- crashes aplenty), I have to say that I'm thoroughly impressed despite my better judgement. There are gaping flaws, yet it still comes together as a very enjoyable experience.

The skills system is both a shining jewel and a gaping flaw, depending on how strictly you want to adhere to your original character conception. I've bitched about RPGs that allow your garden-variety Warrior to learn every spell in the game (I'm looking AT YOU Final Fantasy), and this is definitely that taken to its extreme -- your character can eventually learn every skill, spell and tactic in the game, if sufficient time and effort is put into learning them. The small catch is that a class's specialized skills go up much faster than other, "miscellaneous" skills; if you want your Barbarian to cast illusions, your Sorceror to pick locks and pilfer shops or your Rogue to be proficient with axes and plate mail, you can do it -- it'll just take longer to raise those proficiencies.

Likewise, you can tinker with just about every aspect of the game (and that's WITHOUT taking the built-in Construction Set into consideration). Once you learn a spell, for instance, you can use its "effect" to craft new spells to your specifications; you can change the range (delivered by touch, launched as a projectile, or used on yourself), duration, and magnitude, with the cost in Magicka (spell points) going up or down accordingly. Then you can enchant the effects into your weapons, armor and jewelry, turning them into charged batteries of whatever magic you'll need, tailored exactly how you want them to work. This is both really nifty and highly abusable.
Now if it would just stop CRASHING TO DESKTOP REGULARLY...

Hey, VSP,

Being about halfway through the main storyline myself, I haven't had many problems with Morrowind - once in a while it'll crash, but not on a regular basis. (Remember to save! Man, my highschool teacher would be proud of me.)

As for the cheesy effects a player can create, well, yeah. If that's how you want to play the game, fine, sure. Or you can just play it straight-up and actually enjoy the experience.

It will be purchased tomorrow for sure, mostly because I liked Kingdom Hearts 2 for PS2, and because I haven't picked up a new game since Prototype 2 (and that game was disappointing).
