I figured I'd start a new thread for this because I'm not really talking about classic games generally here (see No Mrs Pacman etc for that one) but I am responding to a linked topic so anyway...

Someone said that Pro Wrestling on the NES was the best Wrestling game ever, but my moneys on No Mercy for the N64 as the absolute best for playability (not an original choice I'm sure but there you go). Great custom options, great storyline mode, damn cool game.

Before anyone says it: yes, I've played various Fire Pros but they're not quite for me.

PS Guru Zim, any chance of a Video Games board, there seems to be a few people into them here that might make it worthwhile... or at least we'll stop clogging up the Random board

i wouldn't call No Mercy my top game, but it's most certinly in my top 10...it's hard for me to narrow down the top ONE game...i play them all for various reason [CAW ability, depth of moves, depth of modes...]

but yeah, No Mercy rocks the casbah...

I have no access to the most recent Japanese games that apparently rock..
Played one japanese game on my friends PSX (after we got the translations from the net) and it ruled..

N64 No Mercy has to be my favorite though.
Pretty much all the moves that matter are in there, and you can make right about anybody look at least half way decent. The only thing that is missing is a good mask option in the CAW.
The playability is amazing and everything looks just sweet.

Sure, stuff like Smackdown has more options but SD 1&2 look kinda bad in the ring. I haven't had the honor of playing SD3 yet so I dont know about that one..

Me & 2 friends are so insane with No Mercy we even have our own PPVs and stuff and I keep a frickin' website with the results, champs and even promos we come up with. *boggle* Oh well..it keeps me from doing some work..

Best wrestling video game would have to go to the old WWF WrestleFest upright video game. Jake The Snake, Hawk, Animal, Mr. Perfect, Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, and some tohers. That game was incredible. I must of spent every bit of my allowance in junior high pumping quarters into that game.

At first I thought, if I were Superman, a perfect secret identity would be "Clark Kent, Dentist," because you could save money on tooth X-rays. But then I thought, if a patient said, "How's my back tooth?" and you just looked at it with your X-ray vision and said, "Oh it's okay," then the patient would probably say, "Aren't you going to take an X-ray, stupid?" and you'd say, "Aw f*** you, get outta here," and then he probably wouldn't even pay his bill.

I never played No Mercy long enough to figure out which button did what (generation gap?)

I always played as Earthquake on WrestleFest.

Now all we need is the play mechanics of No Mercy, the CAW of Smackdown 3, a combination of No Mercy, Wrestlemania, and Smackdown's story modes and the power of the Gamecube. C'mon Yukes.... C'mon THQ... please deliver...

There are people who said that No Mercy style play couldn't be done on a Playstation, but the first WCW game (WCW vs the world? I forget..) had the same mechanics as Revenge/Wrestlemania/No Mercy and it was pretty good too, so maybe they could do a hybrid if they got the two THQ teams together..... man that would ne sweet.

I must say that Smackdown 3 on PS2 just doesn't do it for me. I don't like the button combos. I know thats a lame reason, but I always prefered the Street Fighter series over the Tekken series for the same reason, No Mercy just makes more sense to play, if you know what I mean. That said though, the CAW and the storylines (especially when it's like "Jeff Hardy is calling you out, run around backstage to find him" rule... it's like I'm WALKING! Hehehe )

And speaking of Gamecube, have you seen those Res Evil screenshots? Whoa mama!

Although I haven't had the pleasure of playing any imports, No Mercy takes the cake. Love the CAW, love the control scheme. Just give me the ability to tweak the WWF stars without having to copy them - I don't want Chyna coming to the ring with Eddie anymore!

Pro Wrestling for the NES did rock the party that rocks the body. WWF Wrestlefest was a blast too (DiBiase/Warrior!). I'd also like to throw out The Main Event - all the characters were total rip-offs of real wrestlers, but the fact that you did your moves by mashing on this giant button made it cool enough for me.

Oh, one other thing No Mercy needed to do? Make CAWs count. They were never used in the storymode, or in random picks, or in Royal Rumbles. I'd love it, if for just once my own character came out and kicked my ass while I was trying to win the Royal Rumble.

I love any game with a Royal Rumble and multiplayer.

I love it when my friends and I are hanging out before a PPV playing Smackdown (usually 2) playing Royal Rumble, and totally messing with each other when somebody draws Debra or Stephanie.

The best gay porn game (hee hee, Click Here) is either Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 or No Mercy. I like VPW2 a little better that No Mercy, only because I made a CAW of a friend of mine and during the season he won the World title from Misawa.

The fire pro series is good, but I still think they could improve the graphics on it.

Hey...there's always room to talk about Mrs. Pacman! Mrs. Pacman's the greatest Pac game ever! See?

Ok back to topic!

When it comes to wrestling game, I'll have to go with No Mercy or even Wrestlemania 2000. I don't know why but WM2000 just felt more solid to me than No Mercy, gameplay wise. But Firepro gets a nod, because I think it has the most moves I've ever seen in a wrestling game and it's all done with sprites...which isn't an easy task. Both are great!

Hey - Guess what? Mrs. Pac Man was one of the first games EVER to use Cutscenes. Screw all the fawning over FF, but Mrs. Pacman had all the cutscenes about how she met Mr. Pacman and fell in love! Jeez, that was random. Anyway, I think I like the WM2000 'Road to Wrestlemaina' a bit more than the NMercy storyline thing. The storylines were cool, but after you beat every single one, there's no randomness left in the 1 player game. Oh and the other thing? While No Mercy has superior controls, and more available moves on your character, they dropped some moves from WM2000 that SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DROPPED. Among other things, I'm specifically talking about some of the grapple reversals. There's a great reversal to a back grapple where your opponent does a German suplex on you, but you roll through it, get up and GORE GORE GORE! him. It looks absolutely awesome, but is it in No Mercy? NO. Oh well, I can forgive them for adding the Dragonrana and the German Suplex off the top rope.

I personally believe that WWF Wrestlemania for the Gamecube will be the greatest wrestling game ever, but only if AKI (developer of WM2k/No Mercy) makes the game. I can't tell you how much I hate Yukes (Smackdown). Being a Dreamcast owner, my only choices for wrestling games were WWF Attitude and the ECW game (which were the same game. The same shitty game.) and Royal Rumble, which was Yukes' way of dropping trou, and squeezing out a Cleveland Steamer on my chest.

WMX8 should be in good hands. It's being developed by Yukes, but not by the group that did the Smackdown games. The new group consisted of employees from AKI that were important to the creation of the wrestling engine used in the N64 WWF games.

And if it isn't...I've heard there's a game that's being developed by AKI that will be released by EA. This game will probably use the old AKI engine. It also doesn't have a license, so it won't have any real wrestlers.

Either New Japan 4 or All Japan Giant Gram 2000 for DC.

Giant Gram has the best create-a-wrestler feature ever, where you have to wrestle against opponents to learn their moves and build your character up that way.

An asterik for Fire Pro, which I like, but I'm not part of the cult.

The best wrestling computer game was the game I created for the C64 back in high school. Written entirely in basic, it took forever to print.

It took into account a "control factor", agility, ability, endurance, strength, foul rating, recovery rate, cut rate, injury rate, weight of the wrestler.

Each wrestler had their own "finisher" and "submission hold."

For instance, Greg Valentine's "Hammer" and "Figure 4"

Some examples of what I put into it:

1.There was chain wrestling. A certain hold could only be used if they were on the mat for example.

2. With the strength and weight factors, Lanny Poffo couldn't, for example, bodyslam Andre, and wouldn't try.

3. With the agility factor, Andre couldn't dropkick Poffo off the top rope.

4. Random results off of running to the ropes.

5. With the ability factor, Ted DiBiase might use a fireman's carry, Abdullah, of course, wouldn't.

6. The better the ability, the better chance to reverse a hold or escape.

7. When someone was thrown outside of the ring, the other wrestler may or may not follow. Someone or both could be counted out, and the amount of damage taken would depend on how long they were out of the ring.

8. Injuries and major cuts affected the stats of the wrestlers.

9. Random run-ins by random wrestlers.

10. One, two and three counts decided by a formula and random numbers. Same for submissions.

11. If a wrestler kicked out of a pin attempt, the recovery factor was added to his endurance. (Momentum shift!)

12. I developed a timer linked to the C64 internal clock, so there would be match length times "realistic" to the action.

13. I developed a TAG TEAM version, that included doubleteams, and team finishers. Also, the recovery factor kicked in when a wrestler made a tag, rewarding fast taggers.

And, it was ALL TEXT, with Solie-isms throughout.

Ah there was probably more to it, but memory fades. I know it took up about 3/4 inch thick of paper to print out. It had about 200 wrestlers in it.

This could be the best thing ever though, as if they put in a decent CAW (as they usually leave in the old faces and costumes from previous games) and use those made up characters in the storylines it would make it great beyond belief, licence or not.
