Another post reminded me of this question what was the best comback album you've seen

Mine are

Depeche mode - Ultra(97) they didn't have an album out since 93 and I always thought of them of a pretty great 80s band but with this CD with songs like Barrel of a gun and It's no good. I fell in love with them again.

Inxs - Elegantly wasted(97) how sad, the comeback ended tragedy. Nice album.

New Order - get ready (01) I real surprise how good they are after such a long break between albums.

I have to up the cheeseball quotient here and bust out Meat Loaf and "Bat Out of Hell 2." It just was so epic and huge and bloated in its sound and pulled the spirit of 70's excess into what was considered a somewhat austere musical time that looked down on bombast. It was beautiful.

There, I feel better now.

Rush's forthcoming release will be the greatest comeback album ever. April 2, 2002. Though, much like LL Cool J, I'm sure they'd hate me to call it a comeback.

And loathe as I am to say it, Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation was good. Their last listenable recording.

George Harrison, Cloud Nine.

He took six years between albums, and his previous album was one of the worst-selling solo albums by any former Beatle, "Gone Troppo" (which was actualy a damned fine album with some great, but totally uncommercial, music on it, including the theme from "Time Bandits")

"Troppo" didn't manage to crack the top 200, and set records for the shortest amount of time between its release and landing in the cut-out bins. It has not, to my knowledge, ever been released on CD (at least not in the US).

Then, six years later, with very little advance warning, Harrison released "Cloud Nine", and had a huge hit single-"Got My Mind Set On You", plus to follow-up hits.

He went from selling less than 30,000 copies of "Gone Troppo", to selling several million, after a six-year layoff.

After that, he embarked on a pretty successful run that included his stints with the Traveling Wilburys, a tour of Japan with Eric Clapton (that for some reason has NOT been released on video and DVD in this country) and finally, his reunion with his old compatriots to work on the Beatles Anthology.

And we know what happened in the last few years, but in 1982, the music industry "common knowlege" was that Harrison was over as a musical force, and would never have a hit record again. It's nice that he got one last run as a top-notch artist.

And if you want to go way back, you can look up Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" and Frank Sinatra's "Trilogy" for some pretty impressive comebacks.

The prog-rock minded among you might consider Yes 90125 to be a major comeback, since the group had officially broken up after releasing their only album without Jon Anderson as the lead vocalist.

I'd have to pony up Duran Duran's "Duran Duran (The Wedding Album)" as one of the best. They were reduced to 80's joke (and still are to some extent), but that album made them somewhat relevant again, and gave them another #1 hit.

"Too Much Information" rocks and should have been a killer single too.

drew2, who was a huge DD fan back in high school, and am still a fan today. Wish they would put out a DVD with all their videos on it.

They may just be poised for another comeback. The original lineup is back together, recording an album and preparing to tour.

And speaking of comebacks--with Warren Cucarullo being ousted from Duran Duran, the original lineup of Missing Persons(including Warren, and ex-couple Dale and Terry Bozzio) are recording a reunion album and also gettting ready to tour.

Now if only Danny Elfman would reform Oingo Boingo, we could all feel fifteen years younger.

Despite being quite possibly the world biggest Andy Taylor (DD's guitarist from their eighties heyday) fan. I hope this is a false rumor, or if it's true I hope they still perform the newer songs... otherwise they will have become the retro joke everyone thinks they are (ref Kiss & Black Sabbath... both of whom reunited and pretended over twenty years of their careers didn't happen, losing my respect in both cases.)

The statement from duranduran.com, as posted last May:

"simon & nick announce the next phase of duran duran
As many fans have speculated over recent months, a profound change has occurred at the heart of the band as the story of Duran Duran moves into a
new chapter. The trio of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes & Warren Cuccurullo is coming to an end; the upcoming Japanese dates will be their last together after which Warren will be bound for America and a new project with his pre-Duran band, Missing Persons.

Simon & Nick are to be reunited with original band members Roger, Andy and John Taylor for the first time in 15 years.

"It's something we are very much looking forward to. There has always been an incredible chemistry and musical energy when we have got together. We are all very excited about the prospect of seeing what we can create."

In more recent news, they're still in the studio working on the new album, but have split with Miles Copland, who negotiated the reunion and was promoting the tour.

You're kidding. Even Roger?!?

(Checks duranduran.com) - Oh yeah. The quote from every band that ever reunited: "It's something we are very much looking forward to. There has always been an incredible chemistry and musical energy when we have got together. We are all very excited about the prospect of seeing what we can create." I wonder if somebody makes a copyright royalty off that quote somewhere.

I've been a fan since their "Rio" days as well. Saw them on a triple bill during the "Notorious" tour...David Bowie/Duran Duran/Georgia Satellites at Winnipeg Stadium (home of the CFL's Blue Bombers). On the drive up I hear the Satellites doing a radio interview and they were taking calls. Literally every call went like this..."Hi. Do you have a question for the Georgia Satellites?" "Yes. What time does Bowie come on stage?" Duran got an hour with pretty much their full stage show (they took over an hour to tear down between them and Bowie). You could tell the Duran fans because they screamed bloody murder...but they were few and far between and everybody else was telling them to shut up. It was really sad.

Attempting to move back to the topic (sort of), I loved Duran Duran's last album "Pop Trash". "Starting to Remember" is such a great ballad.
