Just curious. . . Is anyone else a follower of this Icelandic group? In a musical landscape filled with Produced Pop Icons and vapid cookie cutter bands, Sigur Ros definitely stands apart from the rest. Their latest album is untitled. The songs dont have any titles either, and the lyrics are in a made-up language. It is definietely album-oriented as opposed to hit-oriented. Artistic instead of radio-friendly.
After listening to the album, I can definietely see how they were an influence to Radiohead's last two albums. The music can best be described as ethereal. It's not as strong or revolutionary as I was hoping, but a fine album nonetheless. And at least their trying something different, instead of following a formula.
So if you liked Kid A and Amnesiac, you'll like Sigur-Ros.

I was a very happy man last October, as the new Tori Amos and new Sigur Ros albums came out on the same day. I first heard of them a couple of years ago when a friend from Sweden recommended them, and hooked me by sending me "staralflur" to listen to off of Agaetis Byrjun. Mind blowing. Actually, that was a truly mind-altering day musically for me, as in the same day I heard them and Godspeed You Black Emperor! for the first time. As for Sigur Ros, they don't break any new ground really, but they're wonderful listening, finely crafted music, which is enough to set them above most stuff these days.

no, their stuff really is partially composed of a made-up language. i'll try to find a link for you, but the lead singer calls is "Hopelandic". he makes up a lot of words that he thinks sound beautiful. either way, whatever he sings in sounds amazing.

forgive my smug attitude, then.. i stand corrected.
I hate to say it, but they really bore me to tears. I mean, yes, it is beautiful, and they're certainly one of the most creative bands out there. But their music is just so boring... it's sonic tryptophan. And I don't even have to get ripped to fall asleep to them, either.
I had to work the other night when Sigur Ros came to town. Very disappointed. Somebody else already mentioned Godspeed You Black Emperor, whose 1st CD (I think), "Lift yr skinny fists," is highly recommended to fans of Sigur Ros. Godspeed has their own things, though, and are by no means clones. A little closer to home for Sigur Ros, both geographically and musically is Mum, who is also from Iceland. I've been downloading a lot of their stuff and they are quite good.
So do fans of the 1st Sigur Ros CD like the new one, or is the same thing all over again?
My turntables might wobble but they don't fall down.
Just a minor quibble. GYBE's first album was F#A#oo(infinity), followed by "Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada", then came "Lift your Skinny Fists" All of which are of course highly recommended.

i found ( ) to be slightly heavier and darker than the last album. Tracks 4 and 7 are my current favorites. overall i'd say that if you enjoyed the last album, you'll enjoy this one. if not - it probably won't convert you to become a Sigur Ros fan. i'd also suggest checking out their first album, Von. more ambient noise and a couple more straightforward "songs", but interesting listening to hear how the band has developed.
as far as GY!BE, i finally picked up Lift Your... over the weekend and i am really liking it. how is the newest release from them?

I haven't heard the new Godspeed CD yet, but the reviews have been pretty lukewarm. I think I'll have to chunk out the change to hear ( ). Thanks for letting me know what you thought about it.

Apparently Sony heard no "obvious singles" from Fiona Apple's new album Extraordinary Machine, and so they have shelved it. But this month, high quality versions of the tracks have been leaked onto the internet.
