I never watched WCW. I never watched wrestling at all in the early 90's. Until a few days ago, I knew nothing about the guy besides what you people have been saying and the general opinion of people I know that he is a "big star". So, now that I've seen a bit of him on Raw...
THAT is "big star" Stiener? That disgusting fake-tan-orange mass of fake muscles with the goofy chain mail, THE most incoherant promos I've ever heard, catch phrases and sexual induendo that were outdated 10 years ago, and arm veins about one flex away from bursting, THIS is the guy they've been hyping for a month and will likely shoot up to the top of the roster?
WCW watchers and veteran wrestling fans, please enlighten me; why am I supposed to give a damn about this guy?
I can't say that I disagree with you. I don't like the current version of Scott Steiner. He has very little mobility in the ring and his promos are brutal and incoherent.
The Scott Steiner from 10 years ago is a different matter. He was a big muscular guy with the speed and moves of a cruiserweight. THAT Scott Steiner was fun to watch.
Ive not seen mondays raw yet cos we dont get it till friday over here but a few things I've heard from him make me worry.
Examples: 'I cant be a locker room cancer cos I dont talk to anybody.' 'I dont take directions from anybody' 'I'd like to achieve some of the things the Rock etc. have done, but its not really up to me.'
OK, the guy doesnt take orders, doesnt try to raise morale by making friends backstage, and isnt going to accept much responsibility if he's a flop. I hope Vince knows what he's doing with this one
When Scott Steiner won the WCW title, that was judged to be the moment when the company threw in the towel. Now, Scott pre-1995 did many great things. He collapsed Sid's lung in '89, possibly derailing his career. He and Rick were a great tag team and he could actually move around the ring like a Benoit or Angle.
I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.
To me, Steiner's the most exciting thing that's been on Raw for quite a while. Yeah, he's stupid, his promos are very incoherent, he might be musclebound...but by gawd, he has entertained the hell out of me so far.

Can't agree with you more. I like his look, his music, his stupid promos and YES, his matches and moveset. He has the superstar vibe going for him, and I am glad he's here.

I like Steiner. His feud with Goldberg near the end of WCW was pretty damn entertaining, I thought. Plus once he got pumped up enough after winning the title, you literally had NO idea what that guy was going to say in the ring. Even if it sounds stupid, you have to admit its just a bit funny. (Difference between him and Ultimate Warrior is that Warrior is trying to be SERIOUS.)
I thought Midajah added a bit to him though, so I'm somewhat disappointed to not see her. She would do some old-school heel stuff like choking the opponent or even coming off the top rope Lita-style on occasion. They made a pretty good team I thought.

Redsox, why was him winning the WCW title a sign of management throwing in the towel?
Yeah, I don't get that either. Who else were they going to put it on? Really the only established ME'ers they had were Steiner, Jarrett, and Booker, so it's not like there was a better choice.

Well, this Scott Steiner I'm not so high on. Young Scott Steiner is where it's at, and is, for all intents & purposes, a totally different wrestler than today's Steiner. Young Steiner could rip off standing Frankensteiner's like nobody's business, and was throwing out all kinds of suplexes. Young Steiner is the guy Flair voluntarily wanted to lay down for until Steiner turned it down.
Today's Scott Steiner has that cool chain-mail hat. And he's a "fresh" face.

What Steiner lost in moveset, he gained in personality. Toss away the whole outdated sexual innuendo factor for now. We haven't seen the best of Scott Steiner yet. Nobody played the psychotic heel the way Steiner did! I still remember the Mayhem promos of Steiner in the strait jacket. The man plays the role of psycho PERFECTLY!

Reasons why it seemed Scott Steiner getting the title was the beginning of the end. 1) They were giving the belt to a guy who had a very, very bad back problem. Never a good thing. 2) You always had to wonder whether Steiner would be in jail or not from a roid rage incident. 3) If it was Scott Steiner/1991-92, it would have been a brilliant decision. Instead, they gave the belt to a guy who made Sid and Nash look mobile.
Was Steiner the main reason WCW went out of business, no. However he gave me the same impression as champion as I had when Larryland won the battle royal over Zenk for the AWA Title. Just had the feeling nothing good could come from it.
I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.
I have to disagree Redsox... Steiner's title win was a good move at the time. Don't tell me they were throwing in the towel - because the company was LONG past dead.
He pulled a good match out of Sid at Starrcade, had a decent 3 way dance with Jarrett and Sid, and had a great final PPV match with Diamond Dallas Page that was brutal.
If he screwed up his back, they could have moved the title to Sting or Page in a moment, so that wasn't a concern. In fact he did hurt his back but STILL went out like a man and dropped the belt to Booker T in one helluva match on that final Nitro. Whether or not he claims to be out for himself I've NEVER heard stories of him refusing to job. He simply knows how to position himself as a top star. He looks like a star, he wrestles like a star, and he talks like a star.
I know a lot of people aren't high on Scott Steiner, but just because he doesn't fly around the ring doesn't make him a fantastic brawler that reminds me a lot of Steve Austin....
Steiner can be valuable if they protect him. Only wrestle singles on PPV's and the occasional tag or six man on RAW. Don't expose his weaknesses and he'll do just fine. WWE fans will put up with a certain lack of good in ring work if a guy's delivering on the character side.

He's been on TWO shows, and just been doing the old run-in gimmick. He's pretty much Three Minute Warning, except with interviews.
I was born in a manger, like that other guy. You know, he wore a hat?
The thing about Steiner's promos are they're so bad they're funny. I think Jim Ross put it perfectly on raw by saying "Giving this guy a live mic is adventure" (or something to that effect).
I like him. I've always liked him. I hope he brings the funeral gimmick with him as well. I had to grin at the PPV when he said "give me the fucking mic". He's exciting. Besides, remember his match with Booker on the last Nitro? That was classy. The guy is fun. Give him a break.
Problem is with Steiner you don't know what is fake and what is real. At least I don't. In the interview on WWE.com he basically says he doesnt mingle with anyone and that he is only there for himself. Always has been.
When they signed him, they had the interviews with the folks who worked with him and all had very positive things to say about him. Stuff like helping out the young guys.
Now ofcourse, they wouldn't write the bad stuff there but if I didn't like the guy I would just say 'he is a professional and brings excitement' (meaning, personally i dont like him and you never know what shit he is gonna do) like many said in the same style article they did for Bisschoff.
Yeah but when he did he slipped in his entrance and jobbed in two minutes or so. Ahh memories... I would've liked to see WWE go full tilt on a Mysterio/Ultimo feud before his time was up, but alas it's not to be.
