Since Michigan has now put itself on one year probation, as well as forfeiting all games for a 5 year period in the 90's, a few questions come to mind.
1) Since it now never happened, does this mean Chris Webber can no longer be taunted for calling time-out.
2) Does this mean that General Robert Montgomery Knight and other coaches have additional victories put in their career record?
3) And, most importantly, since all Michigan games were forfeits and no longer exist, does that mean people having seats at those games will be refunded their money? I mean, I know the NCAA getting their money back is more important than the fans, but if those games didn't happen, shouldn't a refund occur?

I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

This is a result of the booster or pleaded guilty of laundering money or something like that. There was a lot of talk about Chris Webber earlier this year about it at the time if you remember. They decided to put themself on probation for one year from the NCAA and NIT tournamens, but can still compete in the Big 10 tournament. They also forfeited all victories with Chris Webber, Robert Traylor, Maurice Taylor and Louis Bullock, took down banners that they got from years those players played, and gave back the 450,000 dollars they made from tournament play with those playes.

1) Nah, there is still video footage so feel free to make fun.
2) I would think so.
3) No, the games still happened, they still got to see a game, they are just now losses.

Holy shit! This is unreal. I wasn't yet watching basketball of any description back in 1992-93 (I picked it up a year later), but I have, of course, heard of the Fab Five, having watched highlights of their games on ESPN Classic and such.

They're now meaning to say that none of that ever happened? Does that mean that Cincinatti actually defeated Michigan in the 1992-93 national semifinal? Kentucky defeated Michigan in the 1993-94 national semifinal? Hence, are those two teams going to recieve credit for making it to the national championship game during those years?

An even bigger question is, does this make Florida State the 1997 NIT Champions? Should they get a banner and a trophy for that, not to mention a belated celebration?

This is... strange.

This whole business of forfeiting all wins years afterwards is total foolishness. The Michigan fans and the general public are just supposed to believe that those games never happened? Neither did all the newspaper articles, magazine spreads, or television coverage? That's absurd. Pretending that the past didn't happen doesn't mean that it didn't happen. Besides, all the positive press the university picked up during that time frame - and the financial rewards that came with it - doesn't just disappear because a few administrators erase the seasons years later.

The probation is a good idea. So are the monetary penalties - however, though redsoxnation brings up an interesting point, I don't believe anyone's getting their money back. But as far as the forfeits go - who cares? It's not really producing any worthwhile change. All it's doing is stripping away the past of the untainted Michigan players, and giving victories to other teams that are essentially meaningless (a win has only moral value if given years after the fact, and moral value doesn't advance you in the NCAA/NIT tournaments).

well, the school CLAIMS they gave back $400K in postseason monies, and ya, they got fame, but they are on self-probation, with more to come.

Also, todays kids are paying the price for the sins of the past. Think about those incoming freshmen trying to lead them to a national title, and a good draft choice for themselfves? I bet they feel really jiped. I bet recruitment will be down. Who wants to play for a team that can not ever become #1? Isn't the point of playing is to be the champ? [unless it's college football, where the goal is to win the bowl game, "because we want 28 teams to win their last game instead of 116 losing their last games"]

Uh, dude. All that's guaranteed in the bowl system is 28 teams will win their last games and 28 will lose. Think of all those bowl-ineligible teams.

i was quoting the miami coach from a recent espn.com article...i could link it if needed, but he said that the bowl system is better because "116 teams don't lose their last games"

You want bad refs, you should've seen the dreck the MCC (now the Horizon League; how lame) sent us during UWGB's NCAA-qualifying runs of the mid-90's. Didn't see the UW-Illini game, but anytime Bucky goes over the FIBs...
