Hmm, I thought I would ask because most of the time it's a tight race. Obviously, our small bunch of hockey faithful here at the /Slash board are Gretzky fans. *thumbs up*
When I said 'A' Mario fan...I was hoping you'd say something, Justin.
Mario is playing some damn good hockey. Scary good. He *might* make a run at the goal scoring record, and I think that's why he's pressing for rule changes in the neutral zone. Good lord, the Kings just scored 3 goals in a little over 3 minutes to beat Minnesota. Any chance of Mario trading himself to Los Angeles?
In actual greatness I think it's a close race. If Mario hadn't been out for so long he would be nearing Gretz's point totals. Also Mario is I believe more of a natural goal scorer.
But Gretzky is..Gretzky.

Janet IS rather fetching, isn't he? And a fabulous actress, as her performance in one of the Police Acadamy movies (5?) shows.
While Mario is probably the best pure goal-scorer of all time, when you ask which is the better player, there is no argument. And there are two facts which prove this.
1) Wayne Gretzky has more ASSISTS than anybody else who has EVER played the game has POINTS.
2) Wayne Gretzky ALSO just happens to be highest goal scorer of all time.
In other words, Gretzky just doesn't have more points than everybody who's ever played...he has WELL OVER TWICE AS MANY POINTS than anybody who's ever played.
Kinda stunning, isn't it?

Nod..what is it? 1850 for Gordie and around 3000 for Gretz? with about 2200 assists or so? Still..IF Mario hadn't lost all those years he would have passed Howe by now and be somewhere in the low 2k. Awesome btw that Messier could pass Howe as well..oh wait..he hasn't played much lately

Well we would certainly want Glen Murray and Bryan Smolinski back in exchange. Wait, didn't they go to Boston? Or Murray went to Boston and Smolinski is still there? And they both used to play for Boston? And we got them for Kevin Stevens and Shawn McEachern? I *think*? I forget.
"Is the question "who has the hotter wife?" 'cause the answer to that is Gretzky."
1) Yeah, I'll also choose Gretzky's wife, due to CRZ's mentioning.
2) dMp, yeah, if Mario played more games he'd be closer to Gretzky. But he didn't; thus, one can't assume that'd he be better if he did play more full seasons/more seasons. And right now (as of 1/25) Mario has 653 goals. Gretzky has 894 goals. I highly doubt that Mario can rack up another 241 goals in even the next 5 years (and I don't think he'll even play another 5 years, personally).
3) Trade Mario? Um, I find something really wrong with that. Then again, I also used to think Patrick Roy would never be traded from Montreal-and he got traded to the Avs- so what do I know?
...Some fear the Pink... ...But many fear....THE MOUNTIE! (He's handsome, he's brave, and he's strong, you know)
I'm in the minority here that if Mario had been healthy the argument would not be as easy. I also want to point out that while Gretzky won 4 cups with the Oilers and that scary, scary team he hasn't won one since. Mario almost got himself a 3peat by himself until my man DAVID VOLEK ended that dream in OT. LETS GO ISLANDERS!!!
i just dont know.... it's hard to judge what he might have done in those years that he missed... i say gretsky based on the fact that i haven't seen anyone else play as well as him....
I AM THE BEST there is, was and ever will be!!!! Dont you wish that you were me??? no?.... i've got two words for ya!
Mario didn't need Dave Semenko to protect him, he could protect himself.
I would also like to add that Ron Francis is the most underrated player in NHL history.
That is all.
Q: If you could have interviewed Marvin Gaye, where would you have proposed to meet and what would you have asked him?
A: I would have met anywhere as long as it was before his father shot him. I would have asked him, "Hey, don't you think there's some chance that your father might shoot you? To death, I mean?"
