What's the difference between Windows XP, 2000, and NT? I currently have Windows ME on my computer, but I think its the reason for all these problems its having. For example, if its on for any more than maybe two hours, it starts getting really slow and I'm forced to restart it. it's incredibly annoying and I'm thinking that a new OS may be in order.
Isn't Windows 2000 still DOS based, thus making it not a remake of NT? Personally, knowing Microsoft, I'd go for 2000 until I was sure there weren't any huge bugs in XP.
-Jag I used to fix computers for my school. Now I don't even bother to learn. They all crash anyway.

You know, I hear this from ALL KINDS of people who have ME. EVERYONE complains about it.
I have it. I have yet to experience any kind of problems like the ones I hear about so often. In fact, this has been the best version of windows I've ever used to be honest.
Bill Gates made ME a happy user, so I guess he can sleep easy at night or something.
I have ME dual booting with Windows XP on my system. I'm not sure how that works legally since the XP is an upgrade copy on my ME license, but we'll ignore that for now and pretend it is all kosher (hell, it should be, I can't use them both at once).
Ok, so ME worked really well for 2 months. That's actually pretty good for a MS OS in my care. Now it blue screens sometimes randomly while burning CDs. Very annoying.
XP is rock solid. I have no stability complaints with it. I use 2000 at work, and I don't have any issues, but I do a lot less at work - I didn't really have problems with Win 95 at work either.
ME seems to do weird things if you upgrade IE. I never had problems until I did that.
Oooh, I think I remember hearing something about ME and the new IE not working together.... couldn't really tell you anything though. I basically hate computers right now. Maybe I'll learn to love them again in college. Probably not...
I didn't have any issues with ME that I wasn't already having with 98...but I also got ME as the result of a new desktop purchase, not an upgrade, so maybe that had something to do with it.
XP is, as Guru noted, rock solid. Scanning images used to mean all applications were frozen while the scan was in progress. But with XP, I can scan in the background and perform other important tasks (like overposting in Wienerville.)
(NOTE to Jaguar - I meant "XP". Thanks for the catch.)
OK, thanks for all your help and I think I'm going to purchase Windows XP. I have just one question, what's up with all these different versions? I know that there's Home and professional which is all well and good, but then there's all these different versions within versions. For example, I keep seeing phrases like full version, OEM version, full OEM version, upgrade version and DSP version being tossed around and I don't know which is which. Actually, I'm looking to buy this copy, http://www.z-buy.com/cgi-bin/pickup.cgi?ITEM=DC-MSWXPHEMSUSB&SELECT=other&cust_id=1964879, so if anyoen sees any reason why not to, please tell me. I don't want to waste my money on something I may not be able to use.

As far as I know, the only difference is that Professional has more features. Some of the features (I forget what they are) are actually useful, so just go with Professional. I think the rest is pretty inconsequential, except I recall hearing that the corporate edition of XP doesn't have the product registration bullshit.
BTW, I've been running ME for several months now and haven't had problem one. It actually fixed some lingering Win95 problems on my box, and it boots faster. I'm running a Pentium 233MHz HP Pavilion with 64Mb RAM and two 2gig HDDs.

XP is really the way to go. I've been using it for a few months now and I'll never go back to a previous version! They made all kinds of little, useful tweaks to the UI, not to mention the rock solid NT core. XP is really the best OS that came out of Microsoft since DOS 5!
As for Home vs Pro, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp to check what version you need. Personally, I run Pro because the Home version doesn't have Remote Desktop. Good luck!
Just adding another voice to say that XP rules. Does anyone know whether it's worth converting to NTFS? I upgraded from ME and stayed with FAT32, but it still seems rock solid, so I was wondering whether its worth converting or not....

OK, well, I understood the differences between Home and Professional, it was all that other stuff that was giving me headaches. Either way, I bought it last night and it should probably be in within the week. Thanks for your help.
