Just watched him on the (very funny) live Daily Show election coverage. He certainly sounds like he's going to run against Bush in 2004. I would have loved it if he'd announced that on the Daily Show. Anyway, just wondering how most of you feel Bush/McCain round 2 will play out?

With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.

Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms

However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.

Well...had I been six months older, I would have voted for him in the 2000 CA primary...but I wasn't able to.

Well, I was living in Arizona at the time of his first attempt, and I definitly liked him then (and voted for him). However... he has no chance of unseating Bush in 2004... and I think it would be bad for him to even try. Republicans generally agree that Bush has been the best man for the job since he took office, and it will be next to impossible to convice the Republican base that McCain is a better choice at this point...

I'll support anything that will result in more pictures of McCain holding a lightsaber like he had never seen one before.

From mediaresearch.org:

John McCain earned applause from the Saturday Night Live audience during a skit in which he sang, very badly, some stanzas from Barbra Streisand songs mixed in with some zingers at Streisand for making political pronouncements.

When even New Yorkers laugh and applaud hits on a liberal activist like Streisand you know most find her annoying.

The skit was a take-off on a TV commercial for a CD titled “McCain Sings Streisand.” It opened with McCain singing “people who need people.” McCain then observed: “I’ve been in politics for over 20 years. And for over 20 years I’ve had Barbra Streisand trying to do my job. So I decided to try my hand at her job.”

That prompted the audience to applaud. McCain picked up with a bit of “Memories/The Way We Were” before launching this zinger: “Do I know how to sing? About as well as she knows how to govern America.” That led the New York City audience to laugh and applaud.

McCain, badly and off key, sang some from another Streisand song and then inquired: “Pretty annoying, huh? Now you know how I feel.”

The audience applauded again before McCain delivered a quip followed by a promise: “My new CD is a must for all of Barbra Streisand’s fans as well as Log Cabin Republicans. And as a special added bonus, just for Babs, a portion of all sales will be used to damage Alaskan wildlife preserves. So order today!”

The cause sounds enticing, but believe me, McCain can’t sing so its fortunate it’s all a joke.

McCain is now officially the coolest senator ever!

I agree that the sketch was funny, but there was something a little unsettling about the sketch's general message being "What makes you think you should have any say about your government just because you're an American citizen?".

I didn't get that message from the sketch. The one I got was that some crackpot celebrity who's even an embarrassment to the party she supports getting what she deserved. I don't think anybody attacked her right to make contributions to how she feels the country should be run, just the details.

But Swordsman, don't you realize that when an ultra liberal crackpot celebrity, who lives in her ivory tower far removed from reality and working class americans, starts telling those working class americans how to live their lives, and the Republicans take her to task for it, that the GOP is saying "What makes you think you should have any say about your government just because you're an American citizen?". Apparently it's only OK to put down "celebrities" that have right wing beliefs. And just for the record, Barbra Streisand has absolutely no right to tell me how to live my life and she can take her fake Shakespeare and shove it. Maybe if she could take the time to learn that Saddam Hussein is the leader of Iraq, and not Iran (like she said in her "truth alert") her opinions might be worth more than the trash they are now.

Hey, at least we haven't elected OUR celebrity crackpots to head our major special-interest groups. Unless you count Jimmy Hoffa Jr. I suppose.

And President. We mustn't forget when they elected one President.

It was. Although, I suppose a case could be made for Dubya, seeing as how, if he had a different name, he wouldn't be anywhere near the White House. Or the Texas Governer's mansion, either.

I think OFB was speaking of Reagan as well. But that's neither here nor there...

Hell, why should any American hate a second Bush term?

The way most GOPers and not a small share of media pundits speak of him he's going to turn the economy around, stabilize the Middle East, end hunger, cure cancer, and start bottling his farts and selling it as perfume, all by 2006!

Sounds like the perfect man to me. Well, at least until Jeb runs in 2008...

You can say the same thing about Al Gore too, though I'm pretty sure you guys could figure that out for yourself.

See, the thing with us lefties is that we've FINALLY learned that an idiot with a good name is still an idiot, although it took Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Once you guys learn the same lesson, maybe there will be hope for the country.

See, the thing about us conservatives is we've learned that even though someone may have come from a political family with advantages in his background, it doesn't automatically make them a bad or unqualified candidate for the job.

For instance, if Chelsea Clinton decides to get into politics somewhere down the road, I'd hope that all of us (including conservatives like myself) would judge her on her positions and knowledge of issues, instead of instantly ostracizing her by virtue of being "Clinton's kid".

Well, to me, I wasn't against Bush just because his dad was President. I was against him because he stood for policies that I didn't agree with. It was just disturbing that the man came across as someone with very little knowledge on the issues (to me, anyway), and people still supported him.
