The Bengals won last weekend? What game were you watching?

Perhaps rooting for Green Bay - where we haven't had a franchise running back in years - colors my perceptions.

Give Ahman Green a couple of years.

Um, sorry, Whitebacon - Tennessee 30, Cincinnati 24. In a play that could only happen in a team comfortable with losing, guard Matt O'Dwyer tripped up Corey Dillon, causing him to fall down mere feet from a winning touchdown.

It should be illegal to field a team this hapless - maybe the courts *will* rule for the county in that lawsuit.

Oh yeah, and that guy named Jerry Rice, you know who i'm talking about don't you? Yeah he had Joe F'n Montana throwing to him, and then STEVE YOUNG. They were the best quarterbacks in the league at the time so by the same theory wouldn't that mean that Jerry Rice isn't really the best receiver since he had such good quarterbacks throwing to him?

Please.
A. You're comparing apples to oranges. No matter how good a quarterback you have, you still have to catch the ball. A good offensive line can get you 2 or yards a carry, as Denver has shown.
B. Jerry Rice is still (in his 17th year) a top 10 receiver. Emmitt Smith isn't good enough to be starting on his own team.

Emmit Smith, not good enough to start on his own team?
Now you are being ridiculous. Yeah, the guy had a good O Line... but who cares? Who complains about Jerry Rice being hailed as great? Oh, but he had JOE MONTANA throwing to him all of those years. Please!
Emmitt is about the only shining star on that whole team right now. He has skill, determination, and I enjoy watching him play no matter how much I hate his team. I am sorry...

Whats all this shit about Emmitt owing all his success to his teammates?

Lets look at some stats n facts.

Emmitt has rushed for 1,000 yards 11 consecutive seasons. The ONLY rusher to ever do so.

Oh sure, it was his offensive line though, wasn't it? Nevermind the fact that the offensive line changed almost completely between those 11 seasons. No Sir, it's all on them.

Don't even make me break out the complete list of achievements.

*The biggest reason the Cowboys lost this weekend is that they didn't give the ball to Smith MORE. Instead, they kept it in the hands of a guy (the QB) who had not played at all. And despite stupid coaching, Smith remains quite an effective back.

*If Barry Sanders is a quitter, what does that make Jim Brown, who also quit while on top?

*It makes him the greatest RB of all time, thats what.

*Walter Payton had SEVERAL All-Pro lineman while with the Bears, from the team of Noah Jackson and Revie Sorey to the group that made up the 1985 unit. Plus he had some awfully good blocking backs like Roland Harper and Matt Suhey. He was still amazing.

*Hembrick will never be a featured back. He isn't good enough.

Barry did not retire while he was on top. Barry walked out on his team in the middle of the season because they were not "good enough for him." You just do not do that... if he wanted out of his contract, fine... wait out the season.
I was a huge Sanders fan... until he pulled that. his skill aside, it was probably the most despicable, selfish act that a player could do. Like I said- wait until the end of the season, then retire. period. HE signed the contract... HE knew the Lions history, and that the likelihood of them getting much better was not very good. Barry Sux... and this act alone definitly keeps him out of the top spots of the greatest back of all time....

Unfortunately, Emmitt will be cut at the end of the season if he doesn't retire. His cap value next year is $9 million dollars. That is not going to fly on a team that needs to decide if they will have to go out in the free agent market and get a RB and/or QB in the offseason. I expect to see Hambrick get a LOT of carries down the stretch.

I pretty much expected Emmitt to retire after this season. It would be fitting, I think. Let the new breed work their way up..

I believe he retired before the season even began. The logic I believe for it was that he didn't see any improvement in the team and didn't feel like had any reason left to play if he wasn't going to win a championship. He didn't feel like he had anything left to prove. Had he stayed retired for a year and then gone to a different team, that would be a completely different matter. He still is retired and probably isn't coming back.

Emmitt probably deserves the record just for being able to stay healthy long enough to break it.

SO what you are saying is, that as a Lions fan you were personally hurt by his decision not to continue the rest of the season? THe guy is a world class athelete. The lions should have done more to help him out. More than hire Bobby Ross, or whatever his name was, and have him plunk a fullback in Barry's way, so he couldnt run.

Does Emmitt deserve the record? Of course, he gained the yards. Did he have an awesome line in front of him? of course he did, and to deny that they were part of his success is assinine.

Out of the Top 15 running backs of all time, by TALENT and ABILITY, he isnt near the top half, probably down near 13 or 14. He was lucky enough to go injury free for the majority of his career. Simply a case of good, decent RB, with a great line, in a great system, staying healthy. Thats all.

F#*k Barry.
You do not quit on your team like that... NOT LIKE THAT!
That is all I have to say about that. And it was fun burning my Sanders jersey....
