I've seen almost every ladder match, save some from ECW, NWA TNA, and the two RVD and Eddy had. Here are my favorites in no particular order

Rock vs. HHH
Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit
Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels
Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon I and II
Hardy Boyz vs. Edge and Christian

I don't really care for the TLC matches, b/c there's no design to them really. Its just one guy does a holy shit bump, and then the next guy does one. They are just so gratuitous.

Hey Yo...

I agree on the TLC match, but isn't that the purpose with 4-6 guys?

I would say that my FAVORITE has to be Rock/Triple H. Every other one is playing second fiddle to that one, in my mind.

That's pretty much all of them isn't it?

The only other ladder matches I can remember off the top of my head are...
Mankind and somebody for the hardcore title?
Three Count and Jung Dragons had one didn't they?
Didn't Jarrett and Benoit have one?
RVD vs. Jeff Hardy

Your list is pretty much all the good ones that I know of. So since you said all of them, i'll pick my favorite out of those. Razor vs. HBK part I

Also, HBK and Bret never had a ladder match did they?

Bret and Shawn did have one. A "demo" one, so Bret could show Vince what it was like. It had originally come from Stampede Wrestling. It's included on an old Coliseum Video tape that Scott Keith ranted on a few weeks ago. Eventually, Vince decided to use the concept for the Michaels/Ramon showdown at WM X. As for my favorite ladder match, I really liked HHH/Rock, save for the ending. I loved heel Rock at the time so I was upset he lost. Michaels/Ramon I was great. I've never seen Michaels/Ramon II so I can't judge that one. My own personal favorite, though, is Jericho/Benoit. (all biases duly noted; see picture below my post )

Don't omit Undertaker/Jeff Hardy. That was a wild one, even if just for the concept of Taker in a ladder match.

I'm not voting for it as the BEST, you understand, but it sure was fun to watch. ;-)

True, especially JR's selling on commentary. Hearing it almost made me think Jeff had a chance to win.

Sandman vs. Sabu : Stairway to Hell. Of course it wasn't a technical masterpiece, but dear god was it crazy.
Call me crazy, but I also loved any and all WCW ladder matches, including Syxx vs. Uncle Eddie, Goldberg vs. Scott Hall, and The 3 Count vs. Yung Dragons set of them. There was even an entertaining Bam Bam Bigelow/ Scott Hall ladder match.
God, I miss WCW.

Yes, well, JR's commentary has made us think that TAKA Michinoku could win the title. Here's a few of my personal favorites.

RVD vs. Eddie Guerrero (with the crazed Canadian)
Benoit vs. Jericho
Benoit vs. Jarrett I (they had one on PPV, one on Nitro...or Thunder)
HBK vs. Ramon I (2nd greatest match EVER)

Suffice it to say, it didn't suck. Now we get Edge/Mysterio vs. Angle/Benoit and Angle just might get the Grand Slam! All together now...

Benoit vs Jericho. With TLC and other ladder matches fresh in people's minds, Benoit & Jericho went in and totally delievered with a non-spot fest of a ladder match built around the drama of the climb and brutality of the actual ladder. It was just amazing that they were able to do that after all the spotfest ones that had just taken place in the previous year or so.

Wienerville's resident WCW mark responds:

Yeah, Benoit and Jarrett did have two ladder matches. One at Starrcade 1999 and one the following week. Here are the basic details, off the top of my head:

Scott Hall was scheduled to defend his U.S. Title against Chris Benoit at Starrcade, but Hall couldn't make it due to injury (allegedly). Chris Benoit was awarded the U.S. Title. He came out during Starrcade and said that he wouldn't consider his title win legitimate unless he beat someone for it. Jeff Jarrett was more than happy to accept the opportunity.

Benoit defeated Jarrett in the Starrcade ladder match to win the U.S. Title. The following night, a rematch was signed. Jeff Jarrett won the match when Chris Benoit tried climbing the rungs of a ladder, only for them to break off when he stepped on them. Jarrett whacked Benoit with a guitar and pulled another ladder out from underneath the ring, using it to secure the U.S. Title belt.

I don't think either of those matches (particularly the second one, blah!) was the best ladder match ever, though. I only saw Starrcade once, and while I enjoyed the ladder match, I thought the Benoit/Jericho match at Royal Rumble 2001 blew it away. So, yeah, count me in on that one.

Well, it sure as heck isn't the best, but for strangest, there's a match available via handheld from Tijuana 11/16/01 that's a little different. It's a minis ladder match with Piratita Morgan and Mascarita Sagrada. Nothing in the way of spots, but when you have midgets climbing a ladder that was likely found thrown away behind the Tijuana equivalent of Canadian Tire, that's entertainment.

For favourite overall though would be the Summerslam 95 one.

Starrcade 1999's ladder match was actually quite good. Jarrett could have dogged it, considering he'd been in a Bunkhouse Brawl with Dustin Rhodes earlier on the card (the other good match on the card) but he went out there and busted his ass with Benoit.

That match was a big reminder that throughout all the garbage that was WCW (the Powerbomb match, Montreal Screwjob part 9, The Varsity Club returning...as a bunch of old men...) there were still guys who cared enough to try and make the cards entertaining.

Rumble 2001's ladder match was far superior. But Starrcade 1999 was a diamond in a REALLY crappy show.

I'm very sorry we never got to see the Triple Threat Theatre with Benoit and Jarrett because of the injuries to Bret, Goldberg, and Jarrett. We could very well still be talking about those instead of shuddering at the memory of Kidman jobbing to The Wall in Caged Heat.

Interesting, i never knew that, I'll have to look for that one.

I also have to say I enjoyed Eddy vs. X-Pac, Eddie always peforms well in the ladder matches he's been in, and that period of time was probably X-Pac's prime.

Speaking of that Triple Theatre thing, didn't Jarrett have some kind of warm up for that on Nitro where he fought three legends (Snuka and some other guys)? I remember Jarrett wrestling more than once a lot of times in that period. You have to give the guy credit for trying to carry WCW on his back, whether it worked or not.

I have a tape with the Bret/Shawn ladder match on it. MOST UNUSUAL MATCHES or whatever. It wasn't great, I thought. I mean it wasn't bad, but nothing worth looking for outside of its significance.

Yeah, he fought George Steele, Tito Santana, and Snuka - who was responsible for his concussion unfortunately that ended that Triple Threat Theatre. Snuka hit a splash from the top of the cash - while Benoit headbutted him from the otherside. Unbelievable to see.

I believe Three Count and Jung Dragons had 2 I believe. I think they had like a 3-5 minute one on Nitro over summer of 2000, and a longer one in the August 2000 PPV. There was also like a cruiserweight ladder match at Starrcade 2000.

the only ones that stand out directly when i think of "ladder match" are:

- e&c vs hardyz *no mercy 1999. the match was a total spotfest, obviously, and took what michaels and ramon did, and brought it to the next level, and set the stage for which all of the tlc matches followed. i still watch it today and go "WOW."

- razor vs shawn *wrestlemania x. the match that set the bar for gimmick matches. one of my favorite matches of all time, with the above match. the match that brought a whole new type of gimmick match to the national/global level and made the crowd go "wow." still holds up incredibly well to this day.

honorable mention to benoit vs jericho *royal rumble 2001, razor vs shawn *ss95, and tlc2 *wmx7, which was my favorite tlc match.

Has everyone forgotten Low-Ki, AJ Styles, and Jerry Lynn... or is it just that I'm the only guy who will admit to watching NWA-TNA?

That said, barring TLC matches I have to cast my vote for Jericho/Benoit at RR2001. But I don't get why everyone says it wasn't a spot-fest... just because no one jumped off the ladder doesn't mean it was a psychological masterpiece, or that it wasn't nonstop action. In fact the reason it's my favorite is because of one particular spot: Benoit's tope suicida headfirst into Jericho's well placed chair!

While I, too, am sorry that we weren't able to see Triple Threat Theater, I feel we got something even better. With the injuries to Bret, Goldberg and Jarrett, the World and U.S. Titles were vacated. Benoit faced Sid for the vacant World Title and defeated him.

Mark-out moment of my life as a wrestling fan. And when they stripped Benoit of the title the following night and Benoit was never seen on WCW television again, that was the point when I jumped over to the WWF as well.

I've got nothing against TNA. I don't own a satellite, though, so I've never seen it. I'm not even sure if it's shown every week here in Canada, anyway.
