"Eddy deserves an Emmy."-Scott Kieth from his Smarkdown Rant on October 17, 2002.

This comment does make me wonder. Are professional wrestlers who perform on televised shows eligible to receive an Emmy nomination?

I would think so... as far as I know, all they need to do is submit an episode for consideration. They more than likely wouldn't win, but I don't think you needed me to tell you that.

I'm sure they're eligible, but the Academy (or whoever decides) is most likely not a group of wrestling fans. Plus, with The Sopranos eligible for Emmies next year, the networks might as well not even show up.

Suffice it to say, it didn't suck. Now we get Edge/Mysterio vs. Angle/Benoit and Angle just might get the Grand Slam! All together now...

I'm surprised Vince doesn't move his programming to Daytime so he would be eligible for the Daytime Emmy Awards. Afterall, Vince only cares about Soap Operas now, so why not take the fight right to them.

I want you to know, I agree with everything I've just said.

I was just thinking the same thing. And unless things have changed for the better in terms of Soap Opera storylines since the last time I watched, the WWE may be able to contend for a daytime Emmy.

However, wouldn't it be poetic justice if Booker T or Golddust would be nominated for best comedic actor against Kelsey Grammer?

The Sopranos has sucked more than Raw this year.

To receive an Emmy, an actor must be a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Most likely, the actors branch of ATAS would not accept thespians who are not a member of Screen Actors Guild, meaning the wrestlers would have to be unionized. I'm not sure about that, though.

You submit five episodes to a nomination panel, who then selects five nominees in each field. They're announced in late July, and ballots are sent out to ATAS members to vote. You vote in your category, so Aaron Sorkin and David E. Kelley would vote for directors and writers but not actors, and Kelsey Grammar would be vice versa. One episode is submitted to be judged on by the voters, but each voter is only required to watch one tape per category, not all five. All voters have to sign an affidavit saying they watched the required episodes, or they lose their membership.

You can submit in any category; ER can submit in comedy and Malcolm in the Middle in drama. You just won't be nominated if you're that stupid, or you're the best comedy on television and air Tuesday nights at 8/7c on The WB and people ignore your brilliance. *ahem* Got sidetracked, sorry.

To submit Eddy, it would most likely be the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama category, and you'd actually cut out everything but the parts he is in for the tape you send to voters.

The end result is this: Gilmore Girls gets screwed again. And, of course, no wrestler will ever win an Emmy. But that was obvious.

I think they should do the Slammy awards again this year.

Seriously though, does the Emmy Awards have a costume/makeup award, or a production award? Those are the type a show like Smackdown should be shooting for.

Tonight stopped being about who is right and who is wrong - it became about two men wanting to prove who the better man is - for YOUR entertainment. And that, my friends, is the credo of SmackDown!"

Outstanding Art Direction, Costume Design, Costuming, Makeup, Hairstyling, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Lighting Direction are all available at the Creative Arts Awards (held about two weeks before the Primetime awards,) but WWE would face just as fierce competition there. It would be a smarter bet, though. That's assuming anything on UPN or WB will ever be nominated; the nomination panels are pathetically biased, unlike the voters themselves who can actually do a decent job of wading through the crappy choices the Academy gives them.

Raw, of course, could be nominated (according to the rules, at least) just as easily as Smackdown, but Raw sucks so lets pretend it doesn't exist and watch The Sopranos repeat instead.

Psst, Buffy moved to UPN before last season. Same time slot, but UPN now.

As I recal there are/were a few wrestlers that are qualified to recieve an Emmy.

As PeterStork said, one needs to be a Academy Member and a SAG member to even be placed in consideration for nomination. Rock is a member of SAG, and probably ATAS as well.

I believe that Austin was for a period of time as well (though he didn't necessarily need to be for the limited role he had on Nash Bridges).

Though wrestlers are technically TV actors, they're pretty much immune from NEEDING to be in the Actor's guild, and are probably told not to join, in case of an actor's strike. The main reason for this being that since the WWE is a self supporting entertainment company, it doesn't really need to follow the same guidlines of a normal production company (to whom it is helpfully "suggested" that only SAG actors should be used).

However, the moment a wrestler leaves the comfort of the WWE's production and desire to be anything but extras in TV or movies, their agent will probably tell them to start paying dues to the SAG. Thus, I imagine any wrestler with the acting bug has his card, and is likely eligible for the Emmys. Thus the most recent ones that I can come up with off the top of my head include:

Hulk Hogan
Triple H
The Rock
Kevin Nash
Steve Austin
Mick Foley
Lita
Edge
Shawn Michaels
Chyna
Hardcore Holly
Big Show
Shane McMahon
Paul Heyman
Rena Mero
Undertaker
Goldberg
Sting
Buff Bagwell

Those are only the ones off the top of my head that I can think of. I'm sure there's more. I'd think all the McMahons would have them, as a matter of principal. And I can't think that any of the people listed above would have stopped paying their dues. Even though some of them (like Nash) were years and years ago (remember Super Shredder?).

(Edited to add Sting. Shutterspeed, man...Shutterspeed!)

Since everyone else is doing it (ok, not EVERYONE, but...)

Vikings (1-4) - A win is a win.
Badgers (5-2) - Indiana? INDIANA?!?! *sigh*
Twins (OUT) - Oh well, if we're still around next year...
Buffy 7.4 earns a 6.123 Out of 10 for being contrived and rather stupid. But at least the characters are less annoying than last season. And next week: All Anya, All the Time.

One assumes that most of the WWF/E performers that have appeared on either TV shows in movies have SAG cards, especially if they have speaking parts.

I guess this would include:

Austin (in absentia)
La Roca
Edge (Highlander: Endgame)
Hogan
Flair
HHH (remember Drew Carey)

A good question would be the cast and crew of Tough Enough and if they get them.

I'd guess Angle either has SAG or AFTRA, due to his days of being a Pittsburgh sportscaster.

To be honest Paranoid Rattlesnake heel Austin was some truly amazing acting. I was stunned how good he was. Creepy to funny to angry it was some performance that I'd put up against the top TV actors.

Hmm...are the WWE entrance theme CDs eligible for Grammys? Surely, Gangrel's theme music would have been a contender for something, n'est-ce pas? Maybe the reason Vinnie Mac is starting up a film division is to become eligible for an Oscar? Hell, imagine Paul Heyman hosting the Oscars. If Letterman could do it, Heyman could. (I like both Letterman and Heyman, in case it's not clear.) I suppose all WWE needs is a theater division so they could compete for a Tony. In which case, they could do that WWE Rhapsody someone posted somewhere a few weeks ago. One last thing...is WWE eligible for those People's Choice Awards? From what I remember, they say that the winners are based on a telephone survey of random Americans. So, if someone surveys you and asks your favorite supporting actor in a drama, make sure you nominate Eddy!
