Wow. The past few months of WWF programming have fried my brain of rational thought, so I thought I'd review the WWF's cast of characters:

Brock Lesnar (HEEL) Silent and strong as hell. Hard to hurt.
The Undertaker (FACE) Undead biker guy who's hard to hurt. He was sadistic in the past, and may become sadistic in the future. After all, he burnt down his house when he was a kid.
Kane (FACE) The Undertaker's half-brother who was physically & emotionally scarred when Taker set the house on fire when they were kids...with Kane still inside. He was in an asylum until 1997, when he was released by his father...Paul Bearer. Strong & surprisingly agile...he is also hard to hurt.
Chris Benoit (TWEENER) Strong, fast & calculating. The Wolverine is as tenacious as they come, and he's hard as heck to hurt and keeps coming at you.
Kurt Angle (HEEL) Fast, strong and charismatic, Angle knows he's good and isn't afraid to share that fact with the world.
Booker T (FACE) One of many children in his family's home, growing up in Houston, TX (and later 110th Street in Harlem, NY), Booker T is a street-smart, charismatic rogue who's as fast with a verbal jab as he is with his patented scissors kick.
The Big Show (HEEL) He's big. And...uh...his dad's dead, from cancer.
Chris Jericho (HEEL) Charismatic, fast & calculating, Chris Jericho is fast on his feet, fast with his wit, and willing to do anything to win.
Triple H (HEEL) Big, strong and calculating, Triple H apparantly still blames Shawn Michaels for the MSG Incident. But, under all that, he's a angry blueblood-turned-Cerebral Assassin. He will do whatever it takes to win.
Rob Van Dam (FACE) Fast, charismatic & agile, R.V.D. is laidback and calm. But underneath that cool exterior lies the heart of a competitor. He's able to move quickly and think quick enough to react to almost everything that comes his way.
The Rock (FACE) The People's Champion is fast, charismatic & strong and has recently gone from being just the People'
s CHampion to Hollywood's Champion. But underneath all that, The Rock is still a stalward competitor, always looking for a challenge...inside or outside of the ring.

SEE? This is all they need to remember. The characters who would (and could) concievably commit murder are: Triple H, Undertaker, Kane and maybe Brock Lesnar. Kane's murder could've been BEFORE he was committed.

Y'see, Kane (in his scarred mental state...and 17-18 years old) could've been a bum and attacked a random woman (Katie Vick), thinking it was his brother (or something). He killed her, but was remanded to custody in the asylum. After years of therapy, he was released to the custody of Paul Bearer...and yada yada yada. *SHEESH* At least they could remember the rules they laid down. The first rule of screenwriting is: your world must conform to the rules you have defined for it. Meaning: Spider-Man can't fly, Batman doesn't use guns and KANE WAS IN AN ASYLUM!

Geez!

Apparently, WWE writers just aren't fans of wrestling. Otherwise, the things they write would please fans of wrestling.

With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.

Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms

However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.

Captain America is having a "truth" story written about him revealing the REAL Cap to have been a black guy.

In his original incarnation, Batman had a gun. Jean Paul Valley as Batman had a shuriken gun.

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Willow was at first a ditzy bookworm. She then become a powerful sorceress.

The lesson?

Apparently, when it comes to writing a story that is intended to appeal to an audience over a long period of time, you go with what you think people want, rather than what's faithful to your story. Such is the way of capitalism.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes so he can work on his Lost World series (of 1904--actually his Amazon adventure stories). But fan demand forced him to revive the sleuth.

Hey Yo...

Yeah, they really don't mention the fact that Kane burned down his house and all that old Paul Bearer/asylum crap, and me personally, I'm kind of glad they don't. I didn't mind it at the time, but it's way too... I don't know, I think of the whole original Kane/Undertaker storyline as cheesy as hell. Maybe I'm the only one. Plus, they've both been vamped and revamped so many times, I like 'Taker where he is, and Kane's allright as the somewhat funny lord of the freaks.

Because they've since retconned it. Kane didn't burn down the house, Taker did. Taker even brought it up last year.

Yeah, Taker admitted being behind the murders back in the Ministry days. But then again, a few months later, Taker figured out he was just a TV character and he's really Mark Calloway.

Moral - Think about Kane, Taker, and Bearer too long and your head hurts.

I get the point, but these examples don't match it...

The Black Cap is not supposed to replace the REAL Cap or anything; he's just the only surviving test subject for the formula that turned Steve Rogers into Cap, making him the first CA in title only. No character change involved, and if anything it provides character development for a comic that only recently has been interesting.

Crisis on Infinite Earths killed that piece of Batman history, except for rare occasions when he's snapped or had no other choice.

Willow went through what is called a character arc. And it's one that made sense, thank you very much.

I read too many comics and watch too much t.v.

Yeah, you really don't want to use comic books as proof of continuity, really.

I don't know if you were agreeing or disagreeing with me, but you're right. So many different storylines happen in comic books, and so many writers take the same characters down so many different routes that you can't make a sustained arguement about continuity without finding proof for both sides.

I still think Carl's examples work in continuity though, at least from my perspective.

I don't understand why people keep thinking Taker had some sort of moment where he realized he was just a character and not really a satan-worshipping undertaker. Did this play out on TV? Or did we just decide that's what he did since they gave us no transition between undead Taker and Biker Taker?

It is very possible this did play out on TV and I missed it as viewing WWE is not very much of a priority to me. IF it did, could someone enlighten me?

During the Ministry period in 1999, they went through a short period where they acted like Undertaker was nothing more than a character that "Mark" was playing, and that he believed he was the character and far too gone to know fantasy from reality. Both Vince and Stephanie referred to him on television as Mark.

It lasted about two weeks before they dumped it, so if you missed it, don't feel bad I think they figured it'd be easier to just let the character be, especially since they never addressed what Undertaker just being a character would do to Kane. Hint, hint.

I always saw it as for years this guy Mark Calloway was obsessed with death and the dark side, possibly due to the death of his parents. Thus the urn and all.

He then was away for a while and remembered what life was like (no real TV reason given) and when he came back he was more of himself, more human than ever.

Now, regarding Kane:
Kane is still his little brother and they will not change that (at least not yet) but perhaps Paul Bearer lied all those years and Kane wasn't really in the looney bin for all that time, but leading his life with fosterparents, until Paul found him and told him Taker killed his real parents..

Damn, I just wrote a logical explanation to this all..
Why can we do it, but WWE won't?

Taker took Big Slow under his wing and they went out to Death Valley where Taker forced Big Slow to carry his motorcycle through the desert. That's when I remember them moving towards Bikertaker.

Well, let's do the Official Revised Continuity:

Captain America:
-World War 2 breaks out
-US develops Super-Soldier serum
-US tests serum on black guys
-US gives successful formula to Steve Rogers
-Rogers becomes Captain America
-Cap frozen
-WW2 won by Allies
-Cap defrosted
-Cap has more adventures

Batman
-Bruce Wayne's parents killed
-Alfred made Bruce's guardian
-Bruce goes abroad to train
-Now older, Bruce returns to Gotham
-Bruce Wayne comes Batman

Undertaker
-Mark (insert last name here) born
-Paul Bearer screws Mark's mom
-Kane born (out of wedlock)
-Mark goes nuts, torches family house (killing all but Kane)
-Kane goes nuts
-Kane put into sanitarium
-Mark becomes fixated on death, becomes Undertaker
-Undertaker enters WWF [1991]
-Kane meets Katie Vick (possibly he escaped from sanitarium?)
-Kane rescued from sanitarium by Paul Bearer [1997]
-Kane enters WWF
-Undertaker becomes BikerTaker

ACTIONS define character. Which means, Batman doesn't kill anybody with a gun because (as a gun killed his parents) he hates guns.
Kane hates fire, because he was burnt. SEE??

If the other comic book geek may also add his two cents about this. Yes, Batman did have a gun, but this has been eliminated from all the major contitunity thanks to Infinity Crisis, the 60s liberal revolution and Miller's run on Batman during the 80s. The Batman we have now, maybe not be the true vision of Bob Kane, but Batman hating guns, because his parents were killed by them makes solid sense. If you watched the first episode of Batman Beyond where old Batman almost uses a gun when he has a heart attack, it symbolizes to him, he can't be Batman anymore, so he quits. Which is once again solid character development which the animated series never got credit for.

The Captain America being black does really destroy the continutity if done correctly. This is supposed to be similar to the experiments done on blacks in the Tusky experiments, I know thats spelled wrong. The feeling is, the black Cap will end up dying or just never want to weild the sheild espically if they involve the Civil Rights during the 50s and 60s. You have to remember, Marvel comic in the 60s basically started during the 80s or 70s, so they are just now catching up with their own timelines.

Willow becoming a witch was hinted at a number of times during the first season. Her character slowly went from computer geek to witch which means as a beginner her spells didn't work and eventually she got better.

The Kane/Taker/Paul Bearer thing is just stupid. Don't get me wrong, the original concept of Taker having a brother and everything up until now has clicked. Last year, both brothers came to terms with everything and were mutual allies in a number of storylines such as Two-Man Power Trip and Invasion. Since then, the writers have pushed them away from each other. The murder thing makes little or no sense. Even Kane being part of the army of freaks makes sense. The murder storyline has destoryed the past continutity be eliminating Kane being burned in the fire when he was out, being an outcast, being someone who just arrived out of nowhere and just everything about the charcter. It was a stupid decision by the writers do an angle that eliminates 75% of a character's past. Fans want to know characters inside and out, but still be surprised by their actions. This is not the case, this is just destroying the Kane character.

As much as I loathed living throught the McMahon/Helmsly era, the storyline was great. You know who actually came up with the storyline, a comic book writer. He brought in storyboards and have all the characters fleshed out. Even when the Radicals came in, he still figured out what those characters were. Why he decided to have Too Cool come out during the five man tag and not the Hardies and Jericho, I will never know. But besides that one error, the storyline was great. Unfortuantly, he left prior to Wrestlemania 2000 where Rock was going to win and the next night Foley became comissioner. Instead we got the worst ending to any Wrestlemnia and the constant need to keep HHH at the top. I ask you does the WWE need more soap opera writers or does it need comic book writers?

It needs comic book writers, for sure. What are John Byrne and Chris Claremont up to these days? Hell, bring in Stan Lee and give him creative control for awhile.

I wish Paul Bearer would come back in just normal street clothes and say that he lied about Kane and Undertaker all along. He was never burnt, his parents were never really killed, he was never really in an asylum, and him and Undertaker aren't even brothers.

Instead he reveals that Kane was just a high school drop out who pushed carts at Walmart to earn enough money to go to community college and study denistry, when he decided to go into wrestling.

And Katie Vick was just an old girlfriend or something.

If you had read any of the "Stan Lee rewrites the DC Universe" comics, you wouldn't be asking for him.
