Title: GameCube
Made By: Nintendo
Price: $149.99 in the USA.
Colours: Comes in Indigo, Black, and Platnuim.
Forfathers of note; NES, Super NES, Nintendo 64.

Overview: Many see this as Nintendo's 'make it or break' system. After how the N64 happened, the emergence of Sony as a new power house, plus the deep pockets of Microsoft, Nintendo has to be feeling the pressure right now.

The system comes with 4-Controler ports, making it ideal for Partygamers, Sportsgamers, and Fraggamers. Smash Brothers Melee exploits this to it's full potenial, and obviously First Person Shooters (FPS). The system has fewer games than the PS2, but has a quality selection of titles, and more on the way.

The system is capable of going narrow and broadband, but Nintendo hasn't been pimping it as much as Sony and Microsoft. Inspite of this, Sega is still releasing Phantasy Star Online for the system. Of course, Sega can do this since they have a pre-exsisting server (from their Dreamcast days).

The system (and Nintendo) both have whats called a 'kiddy image', and Nintendo is trying to lose that. From an agressive new ad campign to more adult games, they're pulling out all the stops. Resident Evil is going a long way to help with this. The funny thing is, I don't see many games for the system that appeal to just younger kids, they're the type of games that anyone can really play.

Most people look at the GameCube with a "wait and see" approach. They know of Nintendo's past of not delivering on promises....but they also know that when they're on, no one outside of Sonic Team can touch them. And as it stands right now, Sonic Team isn't making games for a Sega console anymore.

Graphics: The system is cappable of performing some killer visuals, but they often have a soft look. As always, the First Party titles will be the key. If the ones who created the machiene can't get good graphics going, then everyone has an excuse. But so far, that hasn't been the case. Smash Brothers, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Mario Sunshine all display incredible graphics. Lush colours, fantastic detail. The system also has very little load time, which is a treat. Slow down in the games I've played is non-exsistent. 4.5

Sound: Y'all know of my opinion of Rogue Leader is, but scope out the rest of the GameCube games. Melee, Sunshine, Sonic Adventure 2 battle, Resident Evil, Super Monkey Ball2, Bomberman Generations. they all have at least 4/5 sound (most cases higher).

Factor 5 is what this thing is capable of. And as much as I rave about Factor 5, they're looking ahead to an upcoming game that stands the best chance of matching them. Star Wars: Bounty Hunters is coming soon. Not only is the CG Scenes being done by Industrial Light and Magic but the Audio is being personally done by the Skywalker Ranch. That's right. Skywalker. Ranch. LOOK OUT. 5/5.

Controler : A unique design once again by Nintendo (SNES and N-64 also had unique designs). Pressure sensitive shoulder buttons with an anolog stick. Tge Z button returns, but it's at the right shoulder of the pad. A small digital pad is there as well, but it's far too small to make it worthwhile outside of menus and commands (like Wing-man commands in Rogue Leader). The neat thing is the cmaera stick, which in most games would allow you to look around yourself. it basiclly acts like a second analog stick, but a more dedicated one. For some games, the pad works great (adventures, FPS). For others (fighting games outside of Melee), it's not pleasent at all. 4/5.

Periphals: The usual. Gameshark, 3rd party controlers and memory cards, narrow/broadband adaptors. The neat thing is the GBA connector, which allows you to cnnect your GPA to your GameCube and do such cool things like get rare items and stuff. Right now, the cooolest thing is with Animal Crossing. However you can bet that the thing was designed for those little Pokeman dudes.....and I shudder to think what THAT'S going to be like. To boot, controlers are cheap and hey, the things got four ports. If Nintendo gave more solid plans about online play, 5/5 (they have plans but mum's thw word). So sadly, only 4.5/5 for now.

Software: Six months from now there could be no debate. But for right now, the GameCube is transitioning. Waiting for the first party and third party titles to start coming in. Those that are are going to be blockbusters. Buying a GameCube now, you'll get several solid titles and when you're done with them, more will be out (see below for my list of 'must haves and must waits'). Those who bought it right away were somewhat dissapointed. Those who bought it last week won't be complaining. And if things look the way they might be, those who buy one in a half a year will most definitly not be. The real question is....can they last that long? For now, 4.5/5. Expect this to go up next month though.

The Future: This is a make it or break it time for Nintendo and they know it. And now they're starting to pull out all the stops. The potential was always there for success, but that has gotten them no where. With Microsoft buying whatever they can to make it, and Sony on top and not looking like they're going to be falling, Nintendo needs results, and pronto. But they're not alone....

Sega has stepped up to the plate and is offering some blockbuster 3rd party titles, some of which are GameCube exclusive. The wildly (no pun intended) Super Monkey Ball series for one. Ironiclly enough (for those who remember the 16 Bit console war), it appears that Sonic is staying on the Cube only, and Sonic Team's other main prize, Phantasy Star Online, is coming to the GameCube before other systems. There's one game form Sega in development that could change many things, and force some player's hand....Skies of Arcadia is coming to the GameCube exclusivly. And believe me, as a RPG fan, I say you OWE IT TO YOURSELF if you like RPG's to play that game.

Squaresoft is back, with some excellent GBA games, but most notable is an exclusive action oriented Final Fantasy.

However, Nintendo is banking on one thing. And namely one man. The man who holds their only hope of continueing on hardware and not going the way of Sega. That man's name is Miyamoto. And he has three cards to play in this game.

Mario. Samus. Link.

Already we've seen Mario Sunshine step up and deliver the goods. The 'properly evolved' version of Super Mario 64 proved that Nintendo still had it, and it showed as consumers went out in droves to buy it. It's on pace to outsell Mario 64, which is no small feet, and Nintendo is upping the ante by doing a GameCube/Mario Sunshine/Memory Card bundle. Rest assured, THAT will be selling systems.

Next month will tell the tale as well. In the mist of a hectic fall, and GTA Vice City (another surefire system seller, but that's another story), we'll finally see the return of Samus. The screens say it. The video previews say it. The hands on demos say it. From top to bottem the game is looking every bit of the role it has, 2/3's of the saving grace. if it lives up to the hype (and there's PLENTY of it, believe me), 2/3's of the puzzle will be solved. Some critics will be silenced. In order for Nintendo to make it 100% of the way, their last title needs to come through, and it's the most risky.

Zelda turned heads with it's controversial new look. 100% cel shaded. A lot of people cried foul and said they ruined the game with the 'kiddie image'. Heads turned at E3 when Miyamoto himself showed up to defend his stance, and armed with movies and new screens. People walked away impressed but still skeptical. If the game works.....a breakthrough that will save Nintendo. If it doesn't.....you can figure it out.

Overall: 22.5/25

Final Note; I bought a Cube right after the price drop and so far I haven't been dissapointed. With several new titles coming out, it'll be interesting to see what will happen. Given the choice between the PS2 and the GameCube, it'd be a toss up and I'd try to get both. If only one, then go for the PS2 if you like Fighting games and RPGs (but don't cry when you miss out on SoA). Everything else go Cube. But between an X-Box and a GameCube, GameCube no question.

Current titles worth noting;

- Super Mario Sunshine
- Resident Evil 0 and 1
- Smash Bros. Melee
- Rogue Leader
- Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2
- Bomberman Generations
- Madden 2003, NFL 2k3 (plus the other usual sporting suspects).
- Animal Corssing
- Sonic Adventure 2 Battle

Future titles worth noting;

- Resident Evil 4
- Skies of Arcadia
- Jedi Outcast
- James Bond: Nightfire
- Legend of Zelda
- Metriod Prime
- Mario Kart Online
- Animal Corssing online (rumored)
- Phastasy Star Online
- Sonic Mega Collection
- Sonic Adventure One
- Star Fox flying game
- POSSIBLE ports of the two Zelda games from the 64 (rumored, let us hope this happens!).

Personally, I'm a Nintendo fanatic, but I feel personally betrayed at the loss of Rare. ARGH. I'll probably still get a Gamecube, but this has managed to push X-box out of the, "I don't need it. All it has is Halo." to almost wanting to drop some cash on the big green meanie.

With poison running through your veins, and death marching solemnly towards you, heroic acts become more of a necessity as you see your time dwindling.

Vanquishing your enemies, making amends to those you have wronged, and leaving words of love and kindness for those around you become second nature as your own mortality looms

However, true strength lies not in these last desperate acts, but in the actions of one who has to get out of bed the next day and face the consequences of doing that which you believe is right.

Losing Rare is not as big as you may think. Many key players have left rare, making them a shadow of their former selves....and most of them went to studios who work for Nintendo. Considering the money Microsoft was offering, plus the fact Rare accounted for what, 2% of Nintendo's profits? Seems like a nice deal to me. Besides, most of Rare's projects are Ninendo 1st Party liscense anyway. Except for Perfect Dark.

I like to think of myself as a videogame connoisseur. Owning GameCube, PS2, and Xbox I can honestly say that the GameCube kicks every kind of ass PS2 and Xbox have.

The PS2 was unfortunate enough to be the first of the next gen systems out. It's got the weakest power of the three and seems to have more problems breaking down, but Sony has acquired a license that no other system can compete with, the GTA series. The Xbox still isn't worth the money to buy it, there are absolutely no good games for it outside of Halo, and TimeSplitters 2 is a much better game than that. What Xbox does have is a bright future, that is if Microsoft doesn't screw up Xbox Live. GameCube has got the best controller, best library of games, and the best companies developing for it. GameCube also has one developer that no one else can ever have that's got dozens of videogame masterpieces under it's belt, Nintendo themselves.

The loss of Rare isn't really a problem for Nintendo. If you haven't noticed, Rare hasn't been making games as good as they used to. Goldeneye put them on the map and after that they didn't really produce another mega blockbuster hit. Even the so called "Goldeneye killer", Perfect Dark, was no where near as good as Goldeneye itself. Rare has produced mindless fetchquest after mindless fetchquest ever since they completed Goldeneye. Of course, who could expect them to make a game as good as Goldeneye when the entire Goldeneye team left them to form Free Radical, the team who makes TimeSplitters 2, almost immediately after completing Goldeneye. If you want proof of Rare's fall from grace, just try playing StarFox Adventures. Sure it's got nice graphics, but where's the GAMEPLAY?!

A hearty "true that" regarding Star Fox Adventures. But never fear, Fox McCloud will be flying once again...rumor has it the developer for his next game will be Namco, which definitly shows promise.

I feel the need to point out that there's only ONE MONTH LEFT UNTIL METRIOD PRIME. I know it's off topic, but it deserves a mention regardless.

Let it be known that I will play Animal Crossing every day until I've collected every NES game that's available.

Punch Out will be the crown jewel of that collection. Well, right next to Balloon Fight anyway...

And let's not forget, not only is it 1 month until Metroid Prime, it's also one month until Metroid Fusion! Woo!

I also own all three systems. Saying there are absolutely no good games for Xbox outside of Halo just isn't true. At least not for me. Sports games have to go into the equation at some point and it's safe to say I won't be purchasing any for the PS2 or Cube. Not only do they look best on Xbox, but I don't need a memory card to save franchises or dynastys or roster updates, created players, playbooks, anything. It's absolute heaven for me. It saves me tons of money and that is a big advantage.

There are other games i'd say are at least good. Hunter gave me just as much fun with it's mulitplayer as SSBM. Morrowind was a good RPG. There are several good, fun racing games like Sega GT, Project Gotham Racing, and Rallisport Challenge.

That said, Halo is the reason I bought the system, Halo is the game i play most with friends, and Halo is still my favorite game on any system. It would be reason enough by itself for me.

As far as Gamecube goes, Eternal Darkness was also solid. Mario Sunshine was disappointing to me because of all the coin collecting.

The Xbox's unlimited storage is actually a huge advantage over the other systems that I forgot to mention, but there are hard drives coming for PS2 and, I'm fairly certain, for GameCube too...

While Xbox may have the best graphics, I just can't seem to find any exciting games to play. Every Xbox game I bought so far has been a let down. Let's not even get into the controller. Bleh. I bought the S-Controller and it still isn't as comforable as a PS2 or GameCube controller.

Keep in mind, I'm not bashing the Xbox, I'm just waiting for some more good games to come out. I'm sure Ninja Gaiden, DOA VolleyBall, and that $200 Capcom Mech Game will make me very VERY happy.

...Just not enough to like it more than GameCube =)

Hmm... are you other GameCube guys as enthusiastic about the controller as Pescado is?

Whenever I play a demo in the stores, it always seems so small to me. (Though I'm certainly no Man With Giant Hands like Guru- the original XBox controller was huge for me.) I've grown to become really comfortable with the PS2 controller, but in my eyes, nothing will ever top the N64's tripod of awesomeness. Seems weird to me of Nintendo to go from such a thick, big (but not uncomfortable like the XBox) controller to such a tiny lil' thing like the Cube's.

On that note, and I'm not expecting much in asking, but... anybody checked out the Cube JoyBox or the Nyko Play Cube? These are both adapters to use a PS2 controller on the Gamecube, and I'm wondering if it'd be worth it.

And when I say worth it, I mean in the fun make-believe land where I'd have the money to afford buying a Gamecube.

I love the Gamecube controller(love the Wavebird even more) with the exception of the Z button. That's fucking HORRID placement. Good thing most games don't use it then.

Hey Yo...

The controller debate rages on...

As an owner of MANY systems in the past, I can honestly say the best controller for ANY system has to be...

The Playstation controller. Here's why:

1. Consistency. It's EXACTLY like PS1's, just with the added dual shock. Consistency IS good. Plus, there was no transition, "I gotta' figure this damn thing out" time.

2. Buttons. They're perfect. And, it's a lot easier when you always know where they are. No hidden buttons underneath, or any buttons so close to another button you can't actually hit it. Also, no button is too small.

3. Wear and tear. Of all controllers, this one is the best. I've gone through controller after cotnroller on other systems, NEVER on playstation. Never ever. And my B button, the little annoying red on is already starting to stick on my Gamecube. DAMN!

All this being said, I've gotta' give Sony credit for sticking to their guns on this one. Their controller rules all.

Now, that being said, I still think the N64 controller is superior in design to the current one. But, the current Gamecube controller is an interesting mix in design from the original NES, Super NES and N64 designgs. My only beef is the B button is too small and too prone to sticking, and that the X button is too small and close to other buttons to be found most of the time.

As for the X-Box, I DO like the memory option. Other than that, I got no use. Their controller is bulky, not to mention the fact that it looks like a goddamn missile launch room setup. I want to play video games, not rule the entire free world with my atomic weapons. I go to Meijer and Target to test this stuff out, and I sit there, scratching my had most of the time. It's just TOO damn big and the layout is, in a word, crappy. I'm still not buying one.

And PS2 is currently my fave of the three. I like Square's hardcore Final Fantasy titles (which I will include Kingdom Hearts in), and I think that Theivus Raccoonus game, Sly Cooper could be awesome. In fact, I'm going to rent it, probably this weekend to check it out. There's just too many good things going for it, right now, in my opinion.

Edited: for MOST spelling errors and editorial side comments.

My thoughts:

Gamecube: I wish I could be excited about this system, I really do, because I've loved Nintendo ever since my parents bought me an NES many years ago and I was introduced to the wonderful world of Super Mario. I never bought a Super NES or a N64, because I was perfectly happy with my computer games. In retrospect, I kind of wished I would've bought the N64, because I really did enjoy some of the games on it, when I'd play it at other peoples houses.

That being said, only one title really excites me for GC. That's Animal Crossing. If I bought the system, it would be for that one game, and I don't know that that's worth spending $200 that I don't have. I didn't care for Mario 64, so I'm not really interested in picking up Sunshine. I'm the one odd fan boy out of a million who could care less that there's a new Metroid coming out. I think that the new Zelda game looks cool (I have a soft spot for cell shaded graffics), but it's still not something that would sell me on a system.

The additions of the Resident Evil games and Melee MAY be enough, if I really really wanted them badly. But I don't. I wasn't overly impressed with what I've seen of RE, and I know enough people who have Melee that I get my fill of it often enough. Eternal Darkness is another cool game that if I owned a GC I would buy, but I don't so, eh.

I'm perfectly happy with my PS2 sports games, so I don't need a GC for those, and there's honestly nothing else I'd want from the system. So, I'm left in limbo, is one game worth 200 some odd dollars? Probably not.

X-Box: Again, I realize I'm in the minority of gamers who doesn't give a shit about "X-Box Live" or "Playstation Online" or any on-line gaming. I'm one of the few people left who finds single player, story oriented gaming much more satisfying. I realize that it's fun to frag your friends, but it's not worth buying a game just for that or paying a subscription fee just for that to me (which is probably the only reason that I hate FFXI with a burning passion of a thousand suns). As it stands, X-Box seems like it would be the system for me.

It is built like a computer. That's something I can understand. Unfortunately, the controls suck ass, but the graffics and the hard-drive are just what I'm interested in from a gaming platform.

To bad that's where my X-Box love ends.

There is again, one title that I would buy and play regularily. Buffy. And that's just because I'm a fan of the show. Quite simply, I'd rather just wait and see if they port it to other platforms in a few years like they did "Metal Gear Solid". Again, I'm in the minority of gamers here: I hate Halo. Not with the burning passion of a thousand suns, but I do hate it. I'm all for a first person shooter or two now and then (my favorite game for a long time was Max Payne), but I really just don't like the game, I've played it several times, and I can't say that I enjoyed it. Nothing wrong with the graphics or gameplay really, just didn't get into it. If that's the "ONLY" game for the system, I'm out. Maybe after Knights of the Old Republic comes out, I'll rethink.

PS2: The only one I own. First off, I broke down a few years ago and bought myself a Playstation, after many years of telling myself I'd never buy a console and just stick to by GameBoy for non-computer gaming, I realized a simple fact: Alot of Computer gaming sucks now. Not all of it, but most of it. After buying several computer games in a row that were terrible (most in the days of the myrriad "Oh boy, Another FPS Game, You LOVE Those" Games), I pretty much stopped using my computer for gaming (the only games I play on it regularily now are Morrowind, Sims and Warcraft 3). Then when the price dropped on PS2, I was like, "Well...Now I guess I have an excuse to spend all my money." The system has pretty much everything I want as a gamer. The only thing I hate is the memory cards.

The controls are decent and it is playble equally as well by both my nephew (small hands) and myself (big hands). The graphics are a generation behind but they're not so bad that I can honestly say "OMG! Teh grafixz on teh X-Cube are sooooooo much bettar then the onez on ps2!!!111" They're good enough for me.

I have a collection of pretty much any game and type of game that I'd ever really want to play (NCAA, Madden, Tekken, FFX, Smackdown, Kingdom Hearts, and various others that I play at less frequent intervals) and plus all that money I sunk into the PS a few years ago doesn't seem as wasteful. Plus with a full library of games in backlog and a fairly bright future for new ones, I couldn't see myself buying any other system if I was still in the market.

I live to go to my sister's house and sneak a couple Monkey Ball games in. In fact, I almost give in each weekend to buy a Gamecube just for SMB and the just released sequel. Recently though, I heard that Nintendo might release a bundle of the GC and Metroid Prime, and since Metroid is my favorite game of all time, I might have to wait for that.

So two questions: What is the release date for Metroid Prime, and have any of you guys heard about the GC/MP bundle sale rumor?

Well, first off, a thought on Zelda.

So what if it's cel-shaded? I only played a bit of OoT, and I wasn't all that impressed with it either. And it's not like every cel-shaded game is going to look like Jet Grind Radio (a game which is evil in its sheer addictiveness). Isn't Gungrave cel-shaded?

Metroid Prime is coming out on November 18th. As far as I know the sales bundle isn't for a GC/Metroid Prime combo, but a GC/Mario Sunshine pack.

As for Zelda: The Wand of Wind, I can't wait. I don't see anything wrong with the graphics and I think it looks great. I think the people who are calling for Shigeru Miyamoto's head need to calm down and play the game.

After just playing TimeSplitters 2 (which is good, try it on whichever system you own), and Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO on the gamecube I came to two conclusions:

1) For me, the default controls for TimeSplitters 2 sucks ass. But it is easily remedied. and thus, the game rocks (mostly 'cause you can be a fucking cowboy with a laser gun. how cool is that?). I believe that the Multiplayer Game would be kickass because the Single Player deathmatches I played were kickass.

2) The controller does not absolutely suck for fighting games. Iw as able to pull off flawless sho-ryu-ken's with the stick, as well as Ken's Alpha Combo's. However, the "GC-ism" thing absolutely sucks ass. the special moves are not meant to be that simple to pull off, and uhhh... pressing y to switch between hard/medium/light is wrong. Oh, and while for people who are actually good at the capcom fighting games, the gamecubes button layout may not be that great, for me it is perfect. I use hard punch, a lot, so I assign it to the big happy A button. I also use hard kick a lot, and almost any of the other face buttons are good to assign it to. I was able to pulll off all of ken's moves with ease, which means akuma's, sagat's, and ryu's are also easy to do. And really, that's all that matters (I'm a Ken man, damnit, and the other three are just cool). I have no clue how easily charge moves are done, but I generally hate using the charactes that use those moves.

Firstly, sorry for the delay in replying to all of the posts, but thanks for posting!!

Miyamoto is Miyamoto. I'm not going to question his durection with Zelda because he is to video games what Kurt Angle is to wrestling. ~GOLD. The screens I've seen plus the trailor has me sold. This Feb. I'll be buying it.

Reminder; LESS THAN 1 MONTH UNTIL METRIOD PRIME (and Metriod Fusion). All reviews will be bumped back after that game is purchased, and expect a review after a day or two of owning. Yes I expect it to be that good.

About the controlers;

3) Sony and the GameCube are tied. I use them both (at my friend's I use the PS2 and my place GameCube). I like them both equally and find them both very easy to use.
2) N-64's "Tripod of Greatness". Unique and really brought the Analog stick to the fore. Plus it felt comfortable and was very versitile.
1) SNES's official controler is the best IMHO. The shoulder buttons were the BIGGEST development in periphals sense the GameGenie (which previously made the biggest impact), and easily revolutionized the way controlers were made after.

Good point. Look at Capcom: they released maybe two or three games for the N64, and yet it did really well.

( I always wondered why a Street Fighter game was never released on the N64.... )

Ekedolphin to the rescue. If you mean "personally", my answer's no-- haven't played a Gauntlet game before, believe it or not.
