What really surprised me is that 20% of Canadians WANT to be annexed by us. They must have underrepresented Quebec. Although I still can't figure out if they Cactually hate Canada more than us.

You're damn right I want Canada. It's all about the oil!.

All kidding aside, there was one hairbrained scheme a few years back(when Quebec was prepping for a secession referendum) that the US would pick up the Maritime Provinces
(NF, PEI, NS and NB) since there would be an independent Quebec in between the two countries.

I'd still love to get that oil. Plus, BC, Alberta, and Manitoba would further tilt the country Republican.

You think annexing Canada would tilt the country Republican?

And you're thinking Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatawan (or however the hell you spell that). B.C. is more along your Latte-swilling Seattle/Portland kind of vibe.

I kind of liked the idea of getting the maritime provinces. They'd probably cost us money in the short-term, since they're poorer than average, but it might have worked in the long run. But I'm kind of an expansionist when it comes to more states (Puerto Rico, D.C., Pacific territories). I'm convinced that the reason there haven't been any states added is that 50 is just too nice a number to mess with. I mean "53, nifty, United States, from 13 original colonies" just doesn't work. Plus there would be the whole star design thing to think about.

Kidding aside, it's the worry of upsetting the partisan balance that probably is the main reason. but Canada might work. It would definitely make the House more Democratic, and voting for president would be 75% Dem, but but the Senate might be a split.

Ontario & B.C. can be counted on to go Dem. The Plains states (see above) can probably be counted on to go moderate G.O.P. Quebec will elect their nutty guys and probably go with whoever gives them the most Frenchy stuff, which could be either party. The maritimes would probably be swing states along the lines of Maine. So that's pretty even.

Any actual Canadians have an opinion on this one?

EDIT: Uh, make that "13 original colonies." Sorry.

I agree about the Maritimes. My understanding of the Maritime economy circa 1995 when I saw this article was that their economy was in a negative situation and that it would take a lot of work to get it on up to where it needed to be.

As far as adding states. Sure. If DC wants to be a state, let it be a state, but none of this "let's pass a law to get a voting rep" business like they've been trying for a while because that's grossly unconstitutional.

Puerto Rico too. Either become a state or become independent. They can handle it. I'm less sure regarding some of the Pacific Territories(I just don't see American Samoa making it as a full fledged state).

Of course it would be nice to get everything in between as a state too(especially Cuba) but I think my feelings of Manifest Desitny are being taken a tad too far.

Here is a rough explanation of Canadian political loyalties, geographically speaking:

The Atlantic Provinces (New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The Maritine Provinces doesn't include Newfoundland & Labrador) are basically communists. We're all so poor, we rely on each other and our governments for help.

Central Canada (Ontario and Quebec) is a wierd spot. Ontario tends to be a "swing" province. They're government has varied over the years (from tree hugging hippies to evil capitalists), yet they are generally middle of the road types. Much of Southern Ontario is basically like The USA, so you don't see much difference. And Quebec, well, they're Quebec. I can't explain Quebec, but someone from Quebec could.

Western Canada (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan) are basically capitalist pig dogs. They would fit in wonderfully with the USA. Saskatchewan is the poorest of the bunch, but still capitalist pigdogs. I believe capitalist pig dog-ishness develops from farming. There is lots of farming here (and oil in Alberta).

British Columbia is full of tree hugging hippies, and you know what they're like.

Northern Canada (consisting of the Yukon Territory, North West Territory, and Nunavut. Also, Labrador and Northern Quebec can be considered part of Northern Canada, but aren't) is another odd part. Not a lot of people, a shitload of resources and a shitload of infrastructure would need to be built to get said resources, and people to build infrastructure for to get said resources. Politically, they're out for what's best for them, over the long term (or at least what they percieve as the long term).

note: This post is basically in jest, and is an exageration of reality in canada, but is partially true.

Ha ha ha h... hey!

Politics aside, just think how dangerous annexing Canada would be for the world of wrestling fandom. If we didn't have a Canada, how would smarks know which wrestlers to prefer?! There's nothing worse than a confused poseur.

You do realize that there are nearly as many people living in Mexico City (approx 25-30 million depending on estimates) as there are Canadians, right? (est. 33 million last time I looked it up).

It wouldn't make the shift 75% Democrat. At most, they could move the total by 30 million. Assuming an even balance give or take now, thats like 180 / 330 million... Just about a 10 % difference from 150 / 330 million. (54.5 Dem / 45.4 Rep) assuming that every single one of them was of voting age and would vote Democrat (again, it's probably not a 50/50 split at this point, but the change in votes is all I'm trying to illustrate

I am very much playing fast and loose with the numbers. Don't nitpick the math too much.

Atlantic Canada: Would vote DC.
Ontario: Whatever works for us, we're selfish.
Quebec: They'd vote for PQ/BQ. You really think they'd drop that after they join the 'melting pot society'? Those who don't want to seperate WILL want to seperate if the USA takes us over.
West: Rightwing beliefs, so probably Republician.
North: What Fuzzy said.

When it comes to Canadian politics, two things are the key. Ontario and Quebec. The BQ has been able to be the number two party soley on Quebec (higher population means more ridings) while the Liberals have been able to gain a majority government twice now based on the obscene amount of ridings in Ontario. Of course, outside of Quebec, the treasonous punks of the BQ get nothing.

Does this mean we'd have to listen to Anne Murray? On the plus side, could we incorporate the Canadian Holidays, thus giving us many more (especially those of us who celebrate VJ Day and consider Patriots Day Holidays already .)

That two Thanksgivings thing might be weird though.

I'm down for getting July 1st and July 4th off though. That'd make a heck of a long weekend in the right circumstances.

It wouldn't make the shift 75% Democrat.

No no, I meant 75% of Canadians would vote Democrat if they were part of the U.S., not that it would make ALL the U.S. 75% Dem. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

The thing that strikes me about Canadian politics is how regional it seems. The Liberals seem to be the only party that can compete in the whole country. The Canadian Alliance, Bloq Quebec, and N.D.P. seem only to be competitive in a few Provinces at most.

I mean, the South and West are more GOP and the Coasts more Dem here, but it's a rare state where one of the two major parties isn't even competitive (maybe Idaho and West Virginia). I mean, Massachusettes has a GOP governor, and Alaska has a Dem governor. You don't see that kind of stuff in Canada.

That's why you use sick days and claim to your boss your Canadian to pull the very long weekend. Mass. might have had Republican governors for the past 12 years, but they were liberal republicans and the Democratic hacks in the state legislature maintained control of their kickbacks.

I think one mistake you are making is ASSUMING that new citizens in Canadian providences would become either Republican or Democrat. Canada is NOT a 2 party nation, and I would assume that the former Canadians would not embrace our ridiculous notion that "If you do not vote Democrat or Republican, you are wasting your vote." In all honesty, they will probably remain in whatever party they are in now, and it would just splinter off from the Canadian version and become its own entity. The only problem I would have with absorbing some of Canada is their socialistic tendancies... all you have to do it look at their failing health-care system (new citizens do not get state-sponsored health care? Wassupwithdat?), and outrageously high taxes to see how it does not work... though you can get a kick ass 2 topping large pizza in Windsor for about $7 American!
The shake-up would be great. Bring it on!!!
Oh, and DEFINITLY add Puerto Rico, Samoans, Virgin Islands, etc as states. Our flag is getting boring! Hell, we will take Japan too!

This thread is scaring me...time to hole up in the basement with my hockey sticks and beer. Where's the poll on Canada annexing the US?

If I can be serious for a minute... I can see us(Canada and the USA) moving to a common currency before not too long(say, within ten years).

Actually, there's a small movement growing in Western Canada to see if we can get outta Canada. Y'see...

The Liberal Party is in power. They always get the Parliment seats in Ontario & Quebec, and that's all the have to get (because you need half to get majority, and PQ & ONT ARE half). So, the Liberals spent all the tax money from the rich provinces (Alberta, BC, Ontario) on Ontario and the East (where their supporters are). This makes Western Canada angry.

My idea is for BC, Alberta, Yukon & NW Territories to cecede from Canada and join the US, that way we'd get more money outta the deal. Because as long as Canada is billions of dollars in debt, and/or run by the Liberals, we're screwed. And don't get me started on Kyoto...

Why would the US devalue its currency by joining with Canada?
