the tension around here is just like when New York and Virginia were attacked...

5 dead in a 17 hour period, with 4 coming in a 2 hour span this morning, all in a 1 mile radius.

i used to live in the middle of it, if you look at the map with the X's...i was in the center of the X's...luckly i'm just off the right side of the map

last night, i saw streams of cops, bikers and cruisers going up and down new hampshire ave, a major road around here, all night...the first shooting wasn't too far away...

the first shooting was across the street from the Wheaton police station

If this had happened in Detroit, it would be called a slow day.

As well it should be.

It is kind of a frightening situation though. Apparently they think this guy has a high-powered rifle with military ammo and was a sniper.

To look on the bright side(if there is one) is that this is further proof that banning guns does not end gun crime(the weapons they think are involved are highly illegal in civilian hands)

Well that sure makes me feel better. Now we know that criminals do illegal things! God, think of what would happen if we didn't know that?

Yes, except, had someone found the guns on them before the shootings occured, they'd be in jail and the victims would be alive.

I mean, um, the solution is MORE guns!

A bunch of my friends cancelled their plans to go drinking near Woodmont last night, because of this sniper guy. I'm like, you know, down in Southeast, shootings happen *all the time. This one is big news because it's the richest, whitest county. OK, not just that. But still. I think my original point is, no reason to not hit the bar!

Do you realize how ridiculous this argument sounds? More gun laws or less gun laws, nobody could have found them...unless, OFB, you are now supporting the abolition of the Fourth Amendment?

richest, whitest county? you have never lived here before have you? it's about 35% white, 30% black, 20% asian, 15% hispanic, and shootings like this aren't common place. (hit and runs are. there were more hit and runs last year than shooting, 20 - 15 i think)

If this was southeast, or Detroit, i wouldn't be surprised, but this stuff doesn't happen, espically in a area i used to live in and where i presently WORK in.

last summer, i lived a block north of the shoppers food wherehouse, where the guy was killed wednesday night...now i live by Rt 29, but it's scarry to know that i could be mowing the lawn and get shot...

I've got to agree...I don't live in the area, but I'm near Milwaukee where we apparently only get violent mobs of children.

In any case...yes on any given night in a large metropolitan area there may be 5 murders. However, they're not usually connected in any way, and there is usually a motive however stupid. (Cheating on spouse, turf war, etc...)

This case seems to be one very well trained shooter with a high powered rifle. Beyond that there doesn't seem to be any motive or connection, just complete randomness. Hence, the panic. Most poeple live under an impression that being peaceable, and not getting into confrontations leaves you relatively safe. Not so in MD anymore...the next shooting could be anyone...simply for the act of being outside.

It is very disturbing...and will remain so until more details come out.

one more dead, killed a block from the DC line last night at 9:30
i see one common link, all were killed on roads with state names

Rockville pike, called Wisconsin Ave near the DC line
Connicut Ave
Georgia Ave
i Fear New Hampshire Ave is next...but it is too far east from the murder sites, all are in a north-south line either on CT or GA aves or close to them...meaning they probably have a hide out close by....

Richest? Maybe not in the country (although probably damn close), but absolutely in Maryland.

Whitest, no, although your estimates are pretty far off:

Population by Race and Hispanic Origin, April 2000
(U.S. Census Bureau)

Population. . . . . . . . . . ..... . . 873,314
One race specified
White only . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 565,719 64.8%
Black only . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 132,256 15.1%
Asian/Pacific Islander only. . . . . . 99,063 11.3%
American Indian only. . . . . . . . . 2,544 0.3%
Other . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 43,642 5.0%
Two or more races . . . . . . . . . . . 30,117 3.4%

Hispanic (all races) . . . . . . . . . . . . 100,604 11.5%

I think the noteriety is a combination of the randomness, the fact that it's a sniper (not your usually beatings, stabbings, or close range gunfights), and the fact that, yes, this is taking place in an affluent suburbs, not in some slum. If this was hookers in Anacostia being stabbed it would be on page 12 of the Metro section.

EDIT: Linkified!

i should have been more specific, the area where the shooting took place is deverisified [stats taken from the mont county school page taking in to account the local highschools which are miniority rich]

yes, the county as a whole is White, esp the points west of rockville pike, like Chevy Chase, Poolsville, Potamic, Bethesda...

so yes, the county as a whole is rich and white
they murder areas arent

the high schools i used for my stats were Kennedy, Springbrook, B-CC, and Rockville

also, another person shot, at a Michael's, the store that was shot at when this all started, but it was in fredrecksburg, va, in spottslyvania county [sorry about the butchered spelling] and it wasn't with the high powered rifle in the other shootings, but in a day they could drive out there...

edit: moe, you mean they actually would report on anacostia, i thought they were trying to forget people actually live there...BAM, ZING! be here all week...

Then having the shit go down in Bowie this morning certainly doesn't do much either. The real concern now is determining if this is the same guy or a copy cat killer. the only thing that could be worse than the original is having these copycats going around and trying to emulate him. Especially if they continue to go after schoolkids.

If the killer's working his way towards Pennsylvania Avenue, he's in for a rude surprise when he tries it. :)

hey, you all who live near a main road, like I-95, 50, 29...

please be careful out there, with every new shooting, i'm still not surprised, he is always just off an exit and has a quick getaway and is killing people at gas stations.

Have said it before, will say it again: If he was in Detroit, this sniper would be kicked out of the fraternity for a poor work rate.
