Intriguied by what was mention in Keith's Unforgiven rant, I went over to Ain't It Cool to see this script review. It is here.

Now, just to make a few points about this script for those who do not want to read. **SPOILERS, IF THEY EVEN MAKE THE FRIGGING THING**

-Krypton does not blow up
-Clark meets Lois at college
-Lex Luthor is a former CIA turned journalist exposing aliens to the world in Fox specials
-Jimmy Olsen is gay
-There is a bunch of Kryptonian warlords after Kal-El, leading to an invasion
-Superman dies, but is apparently convinced by his father in the after-life that living is a better idea. (WTF?)
-Lex Luthor turns out to be a Kryptonian with super-powers (Oh for pete's...)
-Everyone can do moves like wot that Keanu guy did in that film with the wires.

Now, I know WB seemed desperate to piss away any name value from Batman, but surely they would not make this monstrosity, would they?

That was the Kevin Smith/Tim Burton version, right? I think Timmy proved he should never be let anywhere near a remake since then.

I think it is time to just kill the whole Superman franchise and this might be the best way to do it.

FWIW, one of the possible candidates as Superman is Keanu Reeves.

Also, the guy who wrote this screenplay created the hit show "Alias."

It must be hard to do a decent "Superman" movie. After all the first movie is damn near perfect but even as early as the second one, you're already running to diminishing returns.

I cringed when I saw most of the stuff for this one, but really, no one has gotten a decent "Superman" script out there for years. And to people who say Kevin Snmith's script was the best Superman film ever made, I say this--script writers should never, EVER rip off a plot device from the "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" episode of "The Simpsons."

Seems like everyone has to be "clever" and put their own spin on Superman. Unfortunately that's the kinda thinking that got us nippples on Batman's suit and those creepy creepy ass shots. Anybody really WANT that spin on things?

At least there are compensations--even though the movies have dropped the ball, the WB's animation dept. manages to get them right more often than not.

Hey, be fair here - "Planet of the Apes" may not have been the finest piece of American cinema of all time, but Burton's two Batman movies were probably the best things ever done with the franchise outside of the actual comics. The horrid Batman movies were made by Joel "Hack" Schumaker - Burton was long gone by that point.

Personally, I really wished they'd have made that movie. Burton's always great on a visual level - and usually good on the story side as well, and Kevin Smith would've kept things in line for the easily-outraged comics fans. ("His webslinger is organic?! This is the greatest insult in the history of recorded time!!!")

Plus, Pittsburgh was going to be Metropolis, and, really, how cool is that? (We have a lot of unusual looking buildings downtown, and most people have no idea what this city looks like, so we're not as immediately recognizable as, say, New York.) Instead, we got to be River City in Inspector Gadget. There's a drop-off there.

And as far as Nicholas Cage goes, well, I never thought Michael Keaton would work as Batman, I never thought an Australian soap actor would work as Wolverine and I sure as hell never thought the guy from "Cider House Rules" would work as Spidey, so you never know there...

It's a moot point, because it'll never happen now, but I'm sure it'll turn out better than this concept. Or the Batman VS Superman movie. (Which you just know is going to star Ben Affleck and Matt Damon when all is said and done. You just know it.)

The Batman films were not remakes. Planet Of The Apes still hurts and I tend to lash out wildly at him.

I'm afraid I DID.

Superman 2 is good, but damn flawed. The whole East Huston interlude is painful cornball humour (I hated J.W. Pepper in the "Bond" movies, didn't need to see him reprised in the "Superman" flicks) lots of stuff that makes zero sense (Undoubtledy because they changed directors in midstream) and that really appalingly dumb "superkiss" stuff. I don't care that it wasn't comic specific, it was a little less direct than flashing a card onscreen and saying "We didn't know how to resolve this plot point."

Yes the fights at the end is great and Lex constatly puncturing Zod and his crew are funny. Doesn't give the rest of the movie a pass. It's ALMOST as good as the first, but not quite.

This idea actually is from the comicbook. Pa Kent talked Supes away from the light.

Alas, we'll probably never see a filmic version of that "Phantom Zone" story where Argo City falls on Metropolis and litters the city with thousands of Kryptonite-poisoned corpses.

Sorry--it's a little morbid but pre-Crisis it seemed like half of Krytpon survived that damn explosion.

I thought that was just the father's own comatose delusions. More of a symbolic thing than a cause.

Not Pa Kent, Jar-El, who kills himself so that he can get access to this son and convince him to return.

Is the Kevin Smith that wrote one of the versions of the Superman script, the same one that directed Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back?

Yes. He's a huge comic book fan. He pretty much resurrected the Daredevil comic, the film of which he is directing. He was meant to be working with Burton on the script but apparently Burton ripped the ending to the Fake Planet Of The Apes from one of his comics without permission, pissing off Smith so much that if you can find a signed copy of his Superman Lives script, it is signed with his name and "Fuck You, Tim".

Hey Yo...

God, damn. I liked Planet of the Apes. And ripping on everything is useless. I like Kevin Smith, I like what he did for DareDevil and who can say what Burton's Supes would have been? It never got made. Sure, it's easy to theorize and be all negative, but this is a new low.

Plus, I liked the last Superman, sure it wasn't the best, but that Sun Guy that was Superman's opposite RULED ALL!

How can anyone bitch about that bad script with the numerous ways DC has killed/paralyzed their characters, only to muck up their replacements with bad storylines and have to retract and suddenly make the person "better". Oh, well, just some gripes, I guess. But, in my mind, Burton's the MAN!

Although, I wouldn't mind seeing Terry Gilliam take his shot at the whole superhero genre. He's got the know-how technically to make it look cool as hell, and he's got the sense to choose a good yarn. What's he DOING lately?
