I have to disagree here. Angel and Spike may both now have a soul, but the characters are still opposites at the most basic level - Angel wants to keep his soul, but Spike wants to get rid of his. this sort of dichotomy alone may be anough to get me to tune into Angel for more than just the Faith crossover we're hearing about.

Jkyle.com says:

Just found out that K5 just plain dropped UPN. Shoulda figured that out, what with only UPN shows not showing up anymore, i.e. SmackDown, Buffy, and Twilight Zone.

Fear not my fellow Hawaiians, Buffy's season premiere will be on FOX, Saturday the 28th at 2PM.

First I get a WB/UPN hybrid. Now FOX and CBS are splitting UPN shows.

And still, no SmackDown.

Technically, there would only be one new couple if that happened, as Anya and Spike slept together last year.

I don't think there will be any romance for the Spikester this year, I think too much grief and dealing with his soul.

I'd be very happy to see Buffy and Xander get together, considering that would kind of have the show come full circle, since Xander's main arc in S1.. hell, S2 too, was that he loved Buffy but she wasn't interested in him.

As for Anya, Clem's avaliable
Of course, the Anya/Giles relationship teased in Tabula Rasa last year would make me laugh.

Still with me?

All around, I thought it was a pretty good show.

-I love the new principal guy, but he's SO uneerie, I expect that he's a baddy.

-Couldn't they think of anything interesting for Giles to do since he's not going to be on the show much any more? I guess this Willow thing is ok, but I thought they were the worst segments on the show except the...

-Halfrek/Anya scene, which was just some exposition between the demons about some bad mojo-a-comin' and a set-up about Anya's lack of vengence. Though I thought the part with the "Frog=Frenchman" was well done. Cute scene, but it really didn't DO much other than put Emma Caulfield on screen for a scene (not that I'm complaining or anything).

-I'm not, as of yet, in favor of the "New Scooby Gang" of "Dawn, Vampire Slayer", "Goth Willow" and "Hispanic Xander". I understand that Joss probably wants that to be the future of the show, but I'm not sure thats a place I want to go. For the his part though, I will say that "Hispanic Xander" has some charm.

-Buffy, The Guidance Councellor! It's better than Double Meat!

-Crazy Spike is cool, Be-Souled Spike is not. I'm still 100% against this transformation, but the scene with the Big Bads was gold! THE MAYOR IS GOD!

-The scene with Buffy and Dawn out slaying was nice, as was the scene where Buffy ran down all the things that went wrong at Sunndale High v.1, but the line that sealed those scenes for me was Dawn's "He doesn't know the martial arts moves that all vampires inevitably pick up". It's funny because it's true.

Overall, I cringe because I'm not really interested in another "Sunnydale High Season", partly because I'm not interested enough in Dawn as a main character (I'm much more interested in the rest of the Scoobs: Xander, Willow, Anya, Spike, etc.) and partly because I fear that it's a stab at recapturing the glory days (not to be confused with the "Glory Days") of the show, when it made deep statements about highschool life and how not serious things were, through the eyes of some teenage kids in one long horror movie.

That worked when the show started because, for the viewing audience of the show and the characters, thats where most of them were, but as the show grew up, so did it's characters. Last year was kind of the growing up issue in a nutshell, where the writers tried to make the characters "all grown up" but, unfortunately, didn't stay within the bounds of the characters they'd presented to us. That's why the season was so panned I think, not because it was "bad" (though some of it was), but because it really wasn't Buffy. The characters got way too serious way too fast, and you wonder when Xander lost his smarm, or Willow her geeky love of good, or Buffy her ability to ground herself no matter what the situation. Come hell or high water, I'm graduating college within the next year or year and a half. Sure I've grown up a lot since I was in high school, but I don't think I've really changed that drastically. On the other side of the coin, I think the loss of the show's one true grown up (Tony Head) really left a mark, because, for many of the characters, he was their ground. He had always been around to tell Willow that she was doing good, or glare at Xander's folley, or to remind Buffy of who she was and what she could do, not only as the Slayer, but as a person.

Without that, the characters were kind of adrift. Now we've come full circle. The show is about highschool, albeit, at the current time, from a different perspective, but highschool nonetheless. Pretty soon Dawn and the other two will be hanging out in the library with some aloof but affable mentor and fighting demons before heading home, where I imagine Buffy will be waiting for them with some ice cream and a hug good night (metephorically speaking, I don't really remember Joyce doing that). Though I'm still waiting to see who winds up as the "New Cordelia".

I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm seeing too much paint by numbers for my liking. I understand that if (when) SMG goes out, they need to find a new focus, if they want to continue the show, but I'm not so sure that the best new focus is the old focus.

(I am well aware that the preceeding reads like a wordy dissertation, sorry about that, but thanks for reading it anyway.)

I don't think he's a baddie, but he does know more than he shows. Wouldn't be surprised if he's connected with the Watchers.

Tony Head's supposed to be in a goodly number of episodes, the Willow-Giles bits didn't do much for me either, although I really dug the Harry Potter allusion. If the show does continue, Caulfield has said she's bowing out, so they'll likely be phasing her out over the season. She has no real purpose nowadays except for running the Magic Box. However, I'd like to see the show explore a bit of the Spike/Halfrek situation (For those who forgot, when Hallie locked the Scoobies in the house, she recognized Spike as William)

MINI-RANT:
Am I wrong, or in the season finale broadcast in May, the demon didn't actually mention that he was restoring Spike's soul? They seemed to have added that in the rerun and in the lead to tonight's show.

-I'm not, as of yet, in favor of the "New Scooby Gang" of "Dawn, Vampire Slayer", "Goth Willow" and "Hispanic Xander". I don't have as much Dawn-hate as most, but I really hope she and the ScoobyTwos don't take too much time of the show.

Buffy, The Guidance Councellor! It's better than Double Meat!

Places Buffy back at the Hellmouth, AND gives her an income. Hell of a Macguffin.

-Crazy Spike is cool, Be-Souled Spike is not.

I'll reserve judgement until I see more of Spike.

I'm still 100% against this transformation, but the scene with the Big Bads was gold! THE MAYOR IS GOD!

To hell with the Mayor (O.k. He was indeed really fucking cool). It's all about the hotness that is Glory. And according to AICN, I thought Tara was supposed to be involved in that too.

I think my biggest issue was the incompleteness of it all. Once Willow returns to Sunnydale, I think the chemistry will help a lot.

Like: New Principal. Hope he's a face, not a heel.

Not Like: Scooby Gang V2.0. It was all too forced and convenient and in the first episode too.

Like: New school layout.

Not Like: Xander as competent and in-charge. When he did progress so far up the "construction" ladder?

Like: Villain montage. Where was Faith?

Not Like: So far, put-upon Spike. Will he revert to his William personality?

The bit in the previouslies with the Demon declaring that Spike was getting his soul WAS in the episode. It was the last line of the season.

Overall, I think it looks like this season has a lot of potential.

I'm not going to get into the analysis (overanalysis?) that some of you have. I will say this, I thought the first episode was excellent. Had this episode been ran last year, I would have ranked it second only behind the musical. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that the characters actually seemed in good spirits for once (I'm mean, all the depression last season just wasn't entertaining. If I wanted depressing real life, I would just stick with you know, real life), and it was more action and less soap opera (another problem with last season, it was becoming strictly a soap opera, or like 90210 if you will) As for the rest, I'm willing to wait, but it looks like they've set up some interesting plot lines.

Yeah, it was good, esp. in comparison to last season. It's gotten me interested enough to find out what happens next (sorta like Firefly, that.)

However, at least part of that is the feeling that they are wrapping things up (the First Evil?) while still giving them room for a spin-off/continuation (nice of Dawn to start her own Scooby Gang so quickly.)

One thing I am worried about is this, Joss Whedon wrote this show, and it kicked ass. Joss Whedon also wrote 'Once more with Feeling', and it kicked ass. But last year, that was the one stellar show. Will the other writers pick it up this year? Joss won't be around since he has his million other projects. And it's starting to be clear that Buffy is so much better when he is actually personally involved with the show (I know he says he is always involved with the show, but he is only one man, with about four major projects, how involved could he be?)

Has there been a season where he wrote all the episodes? He's always had other writers.

If this is, indeed, the last season, I guarandamntee he'll be heavily involved in the production. It's his baby, in the long run.

Well, if this IS the last season (As it seems to shape up), Fox has said that they'd be interested in adding a "Buffy: The Animated Series" to it's saturday morning line-up. The Animated Series would start a new continuity, though.

Plus, isn't she Sarah Gellar-Prinze now? Or Is she not taking his name?

Jkyle.com says:

Mayor Wilkins is INDEEED the man. "A soul is as slippery as a greased weasal, why do you think I sold mine?"

I think the new Principle is supposed to be Buffy's new love interest. If that's the case, Xander's been DE-NIED again.

Is this first Evil connected to whatever brought Angel back from Hell? I haven't seen that episode in forever.

I also enjoyed Adam's cameo, and if Tara shows up she'll probably be on the opposite end of the evil, i.e. sent to HELP Buffy, and not one of the Legion of Doom 2K2.

Are they EVER gonna resolve who Whistler was and what he is?

Other than that, I like this season so far and I liked last season too.

Whistler was a demon. I imagine (though it was never implicitly stated) that he was an agent of The Powers That Be (as shown in the storylines of Angel) much like Doyle or Cordelia. I say that mostly because TPTB were really interested in getting Angel on track to be their champion, and I'd think that they'd send an agent to make sure he got on that track. But that's all just speculation on my part.

Since everyone else is doing it (ok, not EVERYONE, but...)

Vikings (0-3) - Looking like a sad year to be a Vikes, fan, and only getting by on my hate for the Rams and...
Badgers (5-0) - The fact that, despite the fact that we looked like crap against friggin' Northern Illinois, we killified Arizona and are close to being bowl bound.
Twins (90-66) - I have no delusions of granduer, but this certainly makes up for being a fan during all the "lean years".
Buffy 7.1 earns a 8.3 Out of 10 for being solid, yet subtly underwhelming.

I just wanted to drop in and say that 7.2 was a great episode. Too bad my UPN dropped audio and I had to read the whole episode in closed caption. Something tells me the last scene would have had oodles more meaning and depth if I could, you know, hear it.

Since everyone else is doing it (ok, not EVERYONE, but...)

Vikings (0-4) - Whoops, that kinda...Uh...Sucked. Hey but at least we looked better in the second half!
Badgers (5-0) - *Sigh.* Bye weeks sure are boring.
Twins (1-1) - Well, that wasn't so hot, now was it?
Buffy 7.2 earns a 8.8 Out of 10 for being the funniest episode since "Tabula Rasa" and without the dramatic ending. It might even have scored higher if my UPN's audio didn't cut out and I didn't have to watch it in closed captioning...
