Just curious as to what CD most surprised you this year. I'm talking about a CD from a band, established or not, that seemed to just come out of the blue and turn out to be really good. My choice would probably be "ANThology" by Alien Ant Farm. First off, I had never even heard of them until they started playing "Smooth Criminal" on the radio and, secondly, the CD is reallly good, despite the fact that the rest of it sounds practically nothing like "Smooth Criminal".
I'd have to pick System of a Down, Toxicity. I generally hate hard music, but this album was awesome beyond belief. I'd heard their earlier stuff, and none of it iterested me. So I was surprised to find that I liked every song on it, instead of only liking a couple.
Don't believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see.
For me the biggest surprise was the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. If you would have told me that Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman would be on one of my top 10 albums of the year, I would have laughed at you and called you a fool. But they were solid, the music was strong, and the album is just as much fun to listen to as the movie is to watch.
Ben Folds - Rockin' the Suburbs. Loved the Whatever and Ever Amen from BF5, but didn't hear anything from their next album, then this little jewel dropped into my CD player. Just awesome, and a fun, fun, listen.

Go back and get their last album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner. It`s a little weirder than the first two, but definitely has some great, great songs on it.
Ben Folds, Five and otherwise, is good stuff, as is the Reinhold Messener album. My girlfriend got me hooked on him. I thought his new album was really solid and listenable. I was expecting more "fear of pop" stuff. Not that "Fear of Pop" is bad, but William Shatner is more of a novelty act than a musical experience.

The Strokes, "Is This It". great new band. the music is simple but good. its hard to define, kind of a mix between the stooges, the velvet underground and the kinks. this band is just what rock needs right now, maybe they'll help get rid of all the crappy teen pop and rap metal and hip hop stuff.
Are those the panties your mother laid out for you?
My biggest surprise was hmmm, let me think. Probably that the snore snore boring band that I saw open for Doves turned out to be THE STROKES, THE SAVIORS OF ROCK AND ROLL. Hahaha. I'm trying to think of a *pleasant* surprise from last year, no really I am.
The only thing I enjoy more than doing the crossword puzzle is actually finishing it.
My top 10 of 2001 isn't anything new, though! The only new thing I can remember was Tomahawk which was awesome but it's also Mike Patton which means I wasn't surprised that it was awesome. Product Placement was good! But it wasn't exactly surprising either, because I was expecting it to be good.
Doves came out in 2000 so hmm that doesn't count, but the show was in 2001 and Jimi Goodwin was SO INTO ME, which I guess was a surprise, so I guess that's it, then!

I have only heard one song by either the Doves or the Strokes, and liked "Last Night(Nite?)" a little better.
A friend of mine did point out that the Strokes were pretty good back in the day when they were Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers tho. His opinion, not necessarily mine.
I was actually pretty surprised how great the New Order album was.. I know they had really great stuff in the past but for them to come back with this album it impressed me
Biggest Surprise of 2001: The ALL "Live Plus One" CD comes with a DESCENDENTS (An Aside: The DESCENDENTS own like The Mountie) live CD all for the price of one. I didn't see that coming, and it made the purchase all the more worth the $12 I spent on it.
...Some fear the Pink... ...But many fear....THE MOUNTIE! (He's handsome, he's brave, and he's strong, you know)
