I just saw something posted on 411 saying how GLAAD is pissed with the way the B&C wedding went down. Well, can you blame them? Why the hell did Vince go out of his way to try and create all this good publicity and then shoot himself in the foot? I mean, if you believe what GLAAD is saying, they were told even after the tapings happened on Tuesday that the wedding went through as planned and everything was well. Then you have freakin Stephanie spouting all this bull about how gay weddings were certainly "topical" and blah blah blah. Any goodwill WWE created with groups like GLAAD went down the freakin toilet on Thursday. Anybody who's never watched wrestling and wanted to watch this episode (even knowing beforehand that everything they do is tongue-in-cheek) got to see intense man-on-woman violence instead of a gay wedding.

Remember, WWE didn't have to create ambiguously gay characters. They deserve any negative backlash they get (in the form of even lower ratings and falling stock price).

GLAAD is seriously delusional if they think a stupid angle like that would go off without a hitch. I mean, did they even know Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo aren't gay?! Anyone else that thinks WWE was trying to create "goodwill" amongst homosexuals with this angle is also an idiot. How is this any different from the Savage/Elizabeth wedding from like 11 years ago? With that I remember Jake the Snake or whoever beating up Savage and put like a snake in one of their gift boxes. The publicity WWE created for this fiasco was just a way to get non-wrestling fans to watch, and try create a stir. Hey maybe their intention was for GLAAD to get pissed off at them, so GLAAD would create more controversy for WWE and people would tune in. remember what Plug from Clerks: TAS said, "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

I have no love lost for GLAAD. They are just a gay mafia and have ridiculous politics. I clearly remember they took a payoff from Kevin Smith for them to stop speaking out against Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Any chance Billy and Chuck will have to give back their gravy boat?

Here's what I know. Weddings = boring. What they did Thursday = entertaining. The hell with goodwill toward the GLAAD.

If GLAAD is too stupid not to check the 100 or so internet sites that post spoilers well, that is just too damn bad. Especially since B&C admitted that they aren't gay on Good Morning America. So did they really think that two straights guys were going to pretend to get married on a wrestling show? I mean how hard would it have been to get one single person to report it that went to the show?

Hey Yo...

I agree. If that segment on Thursday was wrong then I don't wanna' be RIGHT! As for GLAAD, I think they'll get over it. It was a ratings ploy, and the way it was played off on tv was entertaining as hell. When the crowd was booing the wedding, I think that should send a message to GLAAD about how much the WWE really could accomplish with such an angle. And by the end the WWE got Chuck and Billy somewhat cheered. If that isn't a success, I don't know what is.

Also, isn't this the same organization that made such a ruckus about straights playing gays on tv anyways (this came about sometime during the beginning of Will and Grace, all I can remember is Harvey Fierstein bitching and moaning)?

I guess if it means Billy and Chuck will still be a lame tag team that wrestles crappy tag matches, I guess it was a success. I think the idea was to just piss some (like GLAAD) off maybe spike the ratings, just like HLA. How the wedding segment was much different or better than HLA, I don't know. Except it was longer.

SPoilers, previous angles, wrestling stereotypes etc are all irrelevant.
The bottom line is WWE *lied* to GLAAD to get free publicity. That is why GLAAD is angry.

"And in front of the entire world, I want to show my little boy that sometimes - just sometimes, you have to FIGHT to be a man." - Michael S. Hickenbottom, the man who does not take part in angles that conflict with his religion, swearing violent revenge on HHH in full view of his two-year-old son. 11:06 PM, EST. 08/05/02. This angle, which has gone from being a "clean" wrestling match to an all-out unsanctioned street fight for bloody revenge is apparently sponsored by the book of Joshua.

Hey Yo...

Don't you feel as though it's GLAAD's fault? I mean no one ASKED them to get behind this. It IS just an entertainment show. I still don't see how anyone could walk away from that entertained, it was just well booked and entertaining as hell and raised some questions (who's jumping, Rico, Billy AND Chuck? How will Stephanie retaliate? And did anyone else see Angle and Stephanie!? Sure, it probably won't happen, but could they rekindle the romance between Kurt and Steph?). Sure, it wasn't wrestling, but God-dizzle if I wasn't a kid again, it was like being twelve and watching the "Match Made in Heaven/Match Made in Hell" pay per view all over again.

Again, I re-state my case, isn't it GLAAD's fault for getting involved with a television show?

Well, the way they reacted, you'd have to think that they'd never seen anything WWE did. Because, after all, they ALWAYS follow through on their angles AS ADVERTISED. -_- I'm convinced it's gullibility like this that sometimes breeds mainstream contempt for wrestling.

WWE should have had the courtesy of informing GLAAD that this was a bait-and-switch. But instead, WWE used GLAAD to give them their endorsement and get a touch of good publicity. They made GLAAD look like fools.

Well...

GLAAD makes themselves look like fools, verbally attacking people because their religious beliefs tell them that homosexuality is wrong. Whether it is or not, I'm not going to start that particular fire, but I'll say this: Criticizing people because of their religious beliefs is a very stupid thing to do, and a cheap tactic to get publicity for your group.

Anyway.

I didn't watch the Today show or Howard Stern, but I'm under the impression that they showed clips from Tuesday's SmackDown tapings and the wedding segment, right? So it follows that the people doing those shows knew the show was taped, right?

And GLAAD didn't bother saying, “Oh. This show was taped. Let's check the results, to see what went down-- that way, if they screw us, we can take preventive action.”

So GLAAD looks like idiots because they didn't bother reading the SmackDown spoilers. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to find a website with SmackDown spoilers-- hell, WWE's own website posts them.

So please spare me the talk about, “GLAAD got used, GLAAD got played like a fiddle.” Every news source knew going in that neither Billy nor Chuck are gay. (I have my doubts about Billy, frankly, but that's neither here nor there.) Yet GLAAD bought into a wrestling storyline to the point where they bought a wedding present for two heterosexual guys who weren't even really getting married?

If GLAAD's that stupid, they deserve to have the wool pulled over their eyes. Truly.

there was forshadowing on the today show when they said "it WAS a great run"

and GLAAD was upset with Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back because Kevin Smith had one of the evil chicks do an overly elaborate stunt to get away from some lazer eyes and do this cheezy taunt to the lazers and the Shannen Elizabeth character said to the other chick (from Bring it on, and Buffy, and New Guy) "You're SO gay"

it was irony because in some deleated scenes it's revealed that the 4 girls are lesbians. the 2 above are a couple and Ali Larder's character and Kevin's wife are the other couple.

He was having one lesbian accusing another of being gay.

GLAAD wanted $$$ to be shut up, or they were going to launch mas protests. They never caused a stink about his other movies, where Jay gives hints that he's Bi.

Clerks -- "Silent bob, you're kinda cute, i'd get down on my knees and blow you like a circus seal."
Dogma -- Rufus reveals that when Jay masturbates, he's thinking of guys, and when he was sleeping and is woke up, he blurts out "I didn't cum on you pete!"

Chasing Amy was a movie about a straight man trying to get with lesbian, who was bi, and then can't handle her wild sexual past with men and women.

sorry, i could go on and on about Kevin Smith movies (great stories, awkward dialogue).

anyone see Vulger? just came out a week or 2 ago, stars Dante from clerks about a clown named Vulger who is raped by a man and his father if i remember correctly...

I think everyone knew Billy and Chuck weren't gay. But I think GLAAD appreciated the fact that two straight men were sticking their necks out by playing gay characters in pro wrestling, of all things. I assume the gravy boat was a tongue in cheek kind of gift, no pun intended.

I mean, this is pro wrestling, here. Many people perceive it as the haven of the most backwards-minded and slow-witted of our society. So when pro wrestling appears to be openly embracing gay culture, it could be seen as a very positive progression worthy of praise.

Whenever Vinnie Mac knew GLAAD was going to endorse them and he knew how the gay wedding was going to turn out, he should have talked to them. But apparently he didn't, and that's what bugs me. It's just messed up to let people trumpet the fact that the WWE is going to do something so positive, and then NOT DO IT.

And about not reading the spoilers, I bet most casual fans don't know about the spoilers. Most of the 'marks' or casual fans I know don't even know the show is TAPED. GLAAD's mistake was taking McMahon at his word. Shame on them!

I don't think the problem was with the Bischoff ruining the wedding, it's a TV wedding something always goes wrong. And actually I thought it was brillant... I think the problem GLAAD had was the straighFace turn and the whoe "We aren't gay, this was just a publicity stunt" Which kinda breaks the first rule of doing a publicity stunt. DON'T ADMIT IT'S A PUBLICITY STUNT!

Then Vince McMahon wonders why he can't get wrestlers on mainstream talk shows. Well you got them on because of the news story of the odd gimmick/angle and then just hours later you pull a bait and switch on the actual show revealing they aren't gay at all.

...and that's not even getting into the whole deal with Banky.

And that scene in Dogma was hilarious.

Jay: "Okay, do me."
Rufus: "You masturbate more than anyone else on the planet."
Jay: "Come on, everyone knows that! Tell me something they don't know."
Rufus: "When you're doing it, you're thinking about guys."
(silence)

You know what would have happened if Vince would have told GLAAD how the event was going to turn out beforehand? Simple, they would have just got pissed off that much sooner. Otherwise the reaction would have been the same. (other than the possibility, had this received the same publicity, that the angle would have been spoiled for everybody, not just internet people purposely looking them up)
