I just got a PS2, and need to find a really cool driving game, a la Driver 2 (for PS1), one that you can get chased by the police (my son loves that stuff - I know, good example to set). I was looking at the boxes for Midnight Club: Street Racing and Burnout, and they look cool, but I am not sure what is really out there that is any good, or that we won't get tired of in a week. The kick is, it has to be rated T or lower...

I hear that Driver 3 might be coming out soon for ps2...

Stuntman is a stunt driving game my the driver people, but no police chases...
Gran Turismo 3 is the be all and end all of racing simulations...

Ah, well. I was going to suggest that no game does police chases better than Grand Theft Auto 3...

It's not PS2-native, but check out The Italian Job for PS1 (which will play fine on your PS2, though you'll have to buy a cheapo PS1 memory card to save your game). Lots of car chases, a Teen rating, an emphasis on avoiding the cops instead of gunning them down, and it's only ten bucks.

I have the original PS2 Midnight Club, and it came off as a "let's demo what you can do with this new system" game and not something with a lot of playbility or replay value. I don't know how much they've changed for 2.

Not to be kiss-ass... but I think the example you're setting by only getting him a T-rated game or lower is good enough, no?

Thanks, a dad has gotta try. I made the mistake of getting him GTA2 for PS1 last Christmas. Me being the dumbass, I didn't notice it was rated M. I come downstairs and he had been playing it for at least an hour:

Me: "Hey man, how do you like it?"

Son: "Ohhhhhhhhh, this is the BEST! It is SO COOL!"

Me: "Good deal, glad you like it. Santa is a pretty smart dude."

Son: "Yeah, it RULES! Um, one guy said something like a kinda bad word..."

Me: (thinking it was 'crap', 'you suck', or 'damn', which are mild - even though you don't want him saying them) "What words, dude?"

Son: "Watch me steal this guy's car and try and run him over. He will say one of the words again!"

GTA2 voice: "Hey motherfucker! Asshole!"

Me: Takes game out, gets rid of it quick.

I find that extremely hard to believe. Asshole is in GTA2, Shit is in GTA2, Motherfucker is _not_. That word isn't even in GTA3.

The upcoming "The Getaway" for PS2 is the first console game I've heard of that'll have the word "fuck" unbleeped. (Actually, Crazy Taxi was first, but only if you listen REALLY REALLY REALLY hard to one Offspring song on the soundtrack, to the point where you almost have to know it's there to register it.)

Now, whether "asshole" disqualifies the game for your kid is parent's prerogative, of course. If so, I suggest you also keep your kid from watching wrestling, hockey games, or any live sporting event televised from Philadelphia.

I should have mentioned that the aforementioned dialog was somewhat paraphrased, since it was almost a year ago and I remember very little when it comes to exact words used in prior conversations, since you mention it.

I would say, as a parent, "asshole" or "shit" in a video game disqualifies it for my kid, and those words in the course of life (sports, in a store, in a movie I may be watching with him) are explainable and his reaction to said words can be physcially and quickly gauged. With a movie I may be allowing him to watch on his own (as in a video game), I don't like the profanity being there.

Don't know if that explanation made sense, but I guess since it makes sense to me, 'tis what matters.

As I said, parent's prerogative. Nobody said it had to make sense to me.
