We're hearing from a number of our retail sources that Paramount has tentatively set February 25th of next year as the launch date for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on DVD. Expect the complete first season on that date (or thereabouts), with subsequent seasons following every couple of months throughout the rest of 2003. The format and extras for these boxed sets should closely resemble the current The Next Generation DVD sets. And you can reasonably expect Voyager in 2004
You're all so WONDERFUL. Why did they ever have to remove you from the continuity? You'd have made for MARVELOUS stories. You WILL make marvelous stories. And the FIRST story of the new world will be a story of REVENGE! -- The Psycho Pirate, Animal Man 23, May 1990.
Personally, I always thought that DS9 was the most entertaining of all the Trek series, including TNG. It was all about continuity with that show. You couldn't just warp over to a planet, screw up its entire culture and leave, damn the consequences. In DS9, a decision made in the first season will have repercussions throughout the rest of the series (like when Kai Opaka was stranded on a war-ravaged world in the Gamma Quadrant).
This format also allowed for multi-episode story arcs, an idea foreign to any other Star Trek series before or since. The Cardassian/Dominion takeover of Deep Space Nine led into a thireteen-episode-or-so story arc at one point, and then most of the seventh season was all one long story arc.
Plus, if you think about it, there were never any truly horrible episodes of Deep Space Nine. The worst episodes were simply uninteresting, but there were no real stinkers like TNG's “Shades of Gray”.
I'll probably end up buying all seven seasons of DS9 on DVD--- eventually. I'll probably not get them all at once, but make no mistake-- they will all be mine, all mine, bwahaha.

eke, there are PLENTY of DS9 episodes that are wretched (and I say this as someone who loved DS9, and was really quite pissed off recently when all our stations here pulled their reruns of it) But they're not as plentiful as, say "Voyager," DS9 averaged only one or two a season, which was amazing quality control when you think about it.

OK... name the worst episode from all four series you can think of. Odds are the best of the four will be the DS9 episode. Yeah, they did have a few somewhat bad episodes, but I can't remember any that truly disgusted me. (Then again, granted I haven't seen every episode of the series).

I'll do ya one better. I'll name the 4 worst DS9 episodes ever. Like I said tho, DS9 gets props from me because they kept the crap episodes to a minimum (unlike Voyager which had whole seasons I'd like to forget I watched)
I love DS9 to death but when thwy were bad they were BAD. Like "Threshold" bad.
"Profit and Lace"--Quark in drag. It hurts me to think about it now.
"The Emperor's New Cloak"--Even in Coninuity-heavy DS9, they blatantly contracdict themselves. And it's a Ferengui episode too. Double the pain, the double the discomfort.
"Let he Who Is Without Sin." When the writers of said episode actually apologize for it, it's a shameful moment for all involved. Worf commits crime after crime because he's all sulky (thus continuing the "Worf as felon" tradition from TNG) and we gradually learn over the course of the episode that maybe Risa episodes aren't such a good idea.
"Fascination"--DS9 does "The Naked Time/Now." The first time it was funny, the scond it was tacky and by the third time. . .well, blood should be shed.
There's no real DS9 episode that strikes me as incredibly bad. There were a few that threw me for a loop for their rediculousness, such as "Covenant" and the finale "What You Leave Behind," but nothing so bad that I wished death upon myself as a release from watching. There was no TNG "Shades of Gray" or Voyager "Rise."

Kind of off-topic, but the latest rumblings are that "Simpsons" DVDs are going to speed up production and start coming out somewhere between two and four times a year - with Season 3 possibly out by Christmas.

That would seem to make sense on a few levels given that:
a) At least one of Fox's other big time DVD collections (Buffy) is releasing at a rate of 2 seasons per year in the U.S. (one in July and one in December) and is fairly quickly going through it's cataloge,
and
b) Because there are 11 seasons of Simpsons to wade through, and while we still live in the age of the show, I couldn't imagine them not wanting to speed up development to release them as quickly as possible while the show is still relivant to as many people as possible. Waiting until 2005 seems a bit much.
DS9 did have some pretty bad espisodes. But as others have said DS9 first kept the bad episodes to a minimum and second those episodes usually did something for the characters at least. Even the most boring episodes at least developed the characters. But after 7 sometimes very long seasons I couldn't tell you the first thing about most of the Voyagers character's motivations besides don't get killed and go home. Plus Voyager just plain pissed me off. They at first tried to introduce new races but they just gave that up. I guess they finnally figured out how much the Kazon sucked. But the Harogin were pretty good not original but OK. So what did they do? They went back to the fucking Borg.
I just have 13 words for you. How much wood would a woodchuch chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
DS9's bad episodes were definitely at a minimum, and once they picked up, they PICKED UP. I still don't really like the "Klingons getting pissed" era of it, which brought in Worf, but it was still entertaining and it led to Worf being there, which is a good thing although it screws up TNG movies something fierce.
Voyager, on the other hand, UGH. Dear god ugh. I liked the first two seasons, but I about threw up after Voyager and the Borg TEAMED THE F' UP to take out Species 8472. That was enough there.
DS9 had bad episodes, and "Profit and Lace" is probably my pick for "worst episode ever".
On the other hand, to the news that we're probably going to get DVD sets of DS9, I say "Whheeeeee!" DS9 rules in like, 30 or 40 different ways.
Oh, and Eric Bischoff=Weyoun.
I too wish the Simpsons sets would be more speedy in their release. But I'm still not complaining too much. Seasons of tv on dvd= best invention ever. I got hooked on Buffy by my boyfriend's season 1 set, never saw the show. I was so into it I bought season 2, and now I'm annoyed I have to sit through the commercials on FX. The dvd sets totally spoiled me.
As soon as you're born you start dying, so you might as well have a good time.
I can't bring myself to criticize Voyager too much...at least they finally had the good sense to put a woman at the helm.
However, they saddled the show with a terrible premise - stranded in the Delta Quadrant, all the crew could think of was getting home. If they lost the ship or its' essential technology (ie, the warp core), the show was finished - so they never lost it for any real length of time (save for when the Kazon essentially "borrowed" the ship at the end of Season 2). A smarter crew would have investigated the area they were in and charted as much as they could, leaving it to future generations to get back to the Alpha Quadrant. (On that subject: seven years, little else to do, and only *one* child is born - one conceived *before* Voyager enters the Delta Quadrant?)
Then, like WWE, the Voyager writers hit a prolonged drought. They couldn't get over the Kazon as a plausible threat - especially after they lost Voyager so quickly and so easily after capturing it. The Hirogen were never given a proper build. The Vidiians kind of came and went in Season 2. So they turned to a "species" that had been successful for them before - the Borg. Unfortunately, they became the nWo of Voyager, and outlasted their welcome badly. How the Doctor managed to keep his 29th-century holoemitter even after Voyager changed the timeline was a similar lapse.
One other moment of stupidity - Equinox. A smarter crew would have recaptured Equinox, tossed the crew to the Spirits of Good Fortune (they only wanted the *crew*, not the ship), and carved up the Equinox for parts. A second computer, relays, wiring, another shield generator, replicators, spare parts - all Voyager-compatible, enough to sustain the ship for years. Instead, they let Equinox be destroyed. Almost Invasion-like in its' short-sightedness.
DS9 has an excellent BBC-like vibe to it - it's an American Blake's 7, but with a bad-ass in command instead of a permed "freedom fighter". Perhaps that's why DS9 appeals to me.
