Players left unprotected for the Houston Texans to take in the expansion draft have started to leak out. It is the usual high salaried, veteran players who comprise the list so far.

The biggest surprise: Tony Boselli

The list so far can be found Here

Another good article to read is This one

Jamal Andersen, Rob Johnson and Santana Dotson were suprises to me. Especially Jamal. Garrison Hearst came back from injury to have a GREAT year. Jamal could do the same. But it is all about money for this list.

The reason that Jamal was left unprotected was that the has now had TWO major knee operations - not a good thing for a running back. Plus, the Falcons are not convinced that he can return.

As for Rob Johnson - HUGE contract (11.2 million for one more year.) Is 29 and is injury prone. Plus, he is downright unlikable.

If the Texans take a QB from the list released so far, it might be Jeff Blake.

No I did not. I haven't seen any of the Giants list yet. All I have had to deal with is the Jets leaving their entire secondary unprotected and the rumor that they also left "both their QBs" unprotected. Of course, I couldn't think of who the third stringer was.

Anyway - I have a long personal list of Giants who could be left unprotected but of course none of them A) will be or B) will be selected by the Texans.

Knowing the way they taunt me, they will leave Morten free and he will be gone and then we will sign Brad Dalusio again and it will be back to kickoffs that bounce on the 33.

UGH!

Well, here's the Giants' list from your link in the first post:

LB Jessie Armstead ($5,565,369)
S Sam Garnes ($2,764,093)
DE Kenny Holmes ($2,900,000)
G Glenn Parker ($1,663,357)
CB Dave Thomas ($850,000)

Certainly the first four are contract issues. I think Thomas is a talent issue.

Ah, they updated the link since I had pasted it.

Armstead is an interesting case as he was all bitchy and moany that the Giants didn't lock him up to a long term deal and then he played like shit. That'll learn him

Garnes and Thomas are expendable because of the Wills. Not that they were all THAT great. I mean it got to the point where it seemed that I could beat Allen on a post pattern. Plus, the Giants gave that huge deal to Mr. Angie Harmon. Thankfully Shawn Williams is good.

Glenn Parker is a million years old and has no knees.

NY has a moderately high draft pick this year (approx 16th) so they could get decent OL or secondary help. Of course, they will probably draft another RB because God Knows we can't have a draft where the Giants don't pick a running back.

If you live in Houston you just have to licking your lips in anticipation.......not

Romanowski isn't a bad choice though - less than $4m a year and totally psycho - can teach a good work ethic to the young kids they are bound to have on the roster and he can also teach them the correct way to Dope Up before every game

Why wouldnt they put up Kerry Collins?

Blake should be thier QB, he's still got it.

And I CANT BELIEVE the Titans are putting up Bruce Matthews! (the one old guy who played for them for like 19 years) How shitty is that?

Bruce is officially retired now. I wasn't aware you could put up a player that's not even playing next year. Strange...

Did you read this or see this? Maybe if you heard it, they said both CORNERBACKS and you heard QUARTERBACKS. They left Marcus Coleman and Aaron Glenn both unprotected, as far as I know, no QBs were left unprotected.

I guess if they are stupid enough to draft someone who is retired then they deserve it.

Is Rob Moore still any good? He was good at one time.

What happened was that I got into our chat last night and Pogo Pete said to me "Phil, did you know anything further about the Jets leaving their Quarterbacks unprotected? They just said so on ESPN" I said, "I have no idea what you are talking about."

When I read the list, I quickly realized that he probably heard Quarterbacks instead of Cornerbacks. This is why I made the comment that it seemed like the Jets are leaving their entire secondary unprotected.

Now, with that being said. It might not be such a bad idea to leave Vinny unprotected. Obviously, most in the organization want Chad Pennington to be the QB of the future. If the Texans are foolish enough to grab him then it solves the problem of having Herman Edwards tell him, "I like you and all but I am tired of you throwing into triple coverage and folding up like a two-dollar suit as the season goes on."

From the looks of things the Texans could have a pretty good team if they pick the right players.

I was surprised when I saw that the Jags were leaving Boselli and McCardell unprotected, but then I remembered that Jacksonville has major cap problems at the moment.

I live in Houston and the name for QB is David Carr. That is all we hear about so I am sure he will be the #1 pick. As far as the unprotected go, I heard today that they will be looking a Jamal closely, because if he can pull off a Garrison Hearst and come back in top form, he will be a great back for the first season. Either way, we expect our team to suck for awhile so we can get some high-priced players with 2-3 years left on our team and let them walk. It is nice to have 70 million dollars of cap space to play with.

A few thoughts on the protected list:

I'm shocked that Boselli's on the list. Last time I checked, he could still bring it. I'm also surprised to see Keenan McCardell on the list, he's a good #2 WR. Perhaps this is a sign that the Jags are going to completely overhaul their offense - all the way to Mark Brunell and Fred Taylor.

Rob Johnson is toast in Buffalo. They're gonna get rid of him any way they can.

Jamal Anderson - it's a surprise to see someone of his prominence on the list. But the guy's been damaged goods since he was injured about 4 games into the 1999 season. He's got zero chance for a Garrison Hearst-like comeback, because he's been out for far less time, but still putting up crappy numbers over the past few seasons, and missed big chunks of the 1999 and 2001 seasons due to injury. Dud, dud, dud.

New Orleans didn't protect Jeff Blake? He might just be Houston's QB for the first year or two.

I'm really surprised to see so much of the Giants' D on the list - especially guys like Jessie Armstead. Maybe it's contract and cap issues, but still...

In re: Rob Moore... I think he's not bad. But with the emergence of David Boston this year, he's only as good as Arizona WR Frank Sanders. Considering Frank Sanders is much younger than Moore, I think Moore's in danger of being kicked off the Cardinals (which might not be the worst thing in the world to happen to him, mind you... )

RageRocKr, the reason that they are leaving Bosellit and McCardell unprotected is because they have big money contracts, and the Jags have SEVERE cap problems. Trust me, they won't be the only ones that Jacksonville tries to get get rid of to lower the payroll.
