Just a thought. But over the past couple of months, Smackdown seems to be the better of the two main WWE shows. Could the fact that Smackdown is taped in advance and edited have anything to do with this? And could Raw benefit from this same treatment? In my opinion, the WWE had some of it's best shows back in the day of pre-taped Raws. And with no competition on Monday nights, there would be no threat of their main events being "given away". I realize that spoilers exist. But they have not seemed to ruin Smackdown's ratings. What are your thoughts?
After listening to all that has been said... I still prefer the sound of my own voice.
Valid thought, but RAW a year or two ago was just fine being live weekly. It didn't hurt the product then. If strong fresh guys go out in strong fresh matches, live or taped, it's going to rock. RAW sucking hard these past few weeks has not been due to a lack of preparedness or the pains of doing live television. It's been because the talent has sucked hard...especially on top.

I agree with what you say and that should be the beginning point of making changes. But would editing improve the product by cutting deadspots in matches/ promos and allowing JR and Lawler to overdub their commentary?

I disagree. Part of the appeal of Raw over Smackdown is that you don't know what's going to happen ahead of time. There's no chance for spoilers to get out.
They need to start improving the writing in the midcard. Right now, the show is overly focused on HHH. I'm not trying to overly bashing HHH, but at the same time there are no "subplots" to fill the time. Smackdown is loaded with subplots. Noble/Nidia. Billy/Chuck. Edge/Eddie. Kurt/Benoit. Matt/Moore. D'Von/Bautista.
Now let's look at Raw's subplots. Flair/Jericho. Molly/Nowinski. Kane/Unamericans. Three minutes. Tommy Dreamer. Of these, the Three Minutes and Tommy Dreamer are more along the lines of "Single wrestlers/teams we're pushing with no direction). Kane and the Unamericans isn't really focused on a direction yet. It's largely Kane beating them repeatedly because he's the returning monster face. Only Molly/Nowinski and Flair/Jericho can be described as actual subplots at the moment.
yes it would. But perhaps having raw live every week is important for production to know how to run a live PPV, which obviously no one would watch if taped. Being out of practise in running live shows could really hurt the company. It's not easy to run a live show...And those out of practise in so doing end up missing production cues and putting together heroes of wrestling-like broadcasts

In addition to the live RAW being practice for a PPV, I distinctly recall someone in the WWE saying in an interview a while back that it's much cheaper to do the live RAW than the taped Smackdown.

Caped Boy: Excuse me, ladies. You may remember me as the guy who came to dinner a few weeks ago with underwear on my head. My name is Keith Stat from Milbourne, New Jersey. State bird, the mosquito. And as you may have heard I am recently a crowned class B dungeon-master. So if any of you would like to play D&D today, please speak now or forever hold your peace. [He chuckles, and there is an awkward silence at the table.] Caped Boy: Anyone? Alexa! [Alexa gives him a withering glare.] Caped Boy: Maybe you would like to join in? We do need a druid, and you have definitely cast a level 5 charm spell on me. Alexa: In your dreams, douche-bag! Caped Boy: Douche-bags are hygienic products, I take that as a compliment. Thank you. [Keith walks off] Alexa: Ewww!
I'd buy that theory, Mr. Geek. All the fancy editing the Smackdown folk had to do just to make us cheer certain guys, not to mention all the acting lessons required for the vignettes, cost money, and lots of it.

Actually, it is the other way around. The cost of getting a live satellite feed is far more expensive than the post-production editing that is done with SmackDown.
Actually Tino, live productions tend to be much cheaper than things that require post production work, because post production costs mad $$$. However I would imagine the WWE does their own post work, especially given the fact they probably produce all their vignettes/ppv promos/titan trons all in house, so they probably save money in that regard....
Maybe.
Post production personel do not come cheap. I'm what you can call 'cheap personel', because I make far less an hour then the owner and senior editors where I work. That said....to get the company to do it costs MAD money.
Basiclly what I'm saying is if they hire an outside group for their editing, Smackdown! costs more. Period. But if it's all in house....than maybe that'd make it a different story.
Going Anon: You failed to note the very loud "Erik Watts sucks" chant while he's being interviewed in the back.
I have failed each and every one of you.
