Ok, ladies. Here's something I'm interested in:

How did you get into wrestling? My boyfriend loves to say that there are 3 types of female wrestling fans:

1) Females who have the hots for a wrestler.
2) Females who are dating someone who loves wrestling.
3) Females who loved it as a kid, and never stopped loving it.

I think that's a bit narrow, but if I were to be one, I'd be #3. My big brother got me into it, and loved to harass 5 year old me by rooting for all the heels. Now, I prefer the heels, and my big brother thinks I'm a moron for watching a "fake sport".

How did you get into it? Was there a particular angle that drew you in? A particular wrestler you saw who made you say, "Wow, this is pretty cool."?

None of those categories! I'm a computer game artist. I had to work on a wrestling game, and so I started watching (Raw and some PPV tapes). I figured I was going to hate it, because of COURSE everyone knows that pro rasslin' is vulgar, weird, and violent. ;-)

I did hate it. ;-) I thought it was awful, but I kept watching. It took me about three days to get the joke--it was the Judgment Day 2000 Iron Man match on tape that finally got me.

I haven't missed more than two or three shows since then, and neither has my husband. I sold him on it, and not the other way around.

Yay! This would be my very first post anywhere on a wrestling related board! And the fact that it's Ladies Only makes me feel just a -little- better. It seems like most of the places I visit, females are a rarity. And yes, I am a female!

....

Anyway, that's not the point of this thread, is it? The point is that one particular moment when I became hooked on wrestling. And, well, I can pinpoint that exactly.

I was babysitting for a guy last year who really, really dug wrestling. At that point, it didn't interest me. It was just something that I saw whenever I was flipping through the channels. But, alas, the poor man lost his cable connection and thus his ability to watch Raw and Smackdown. He started to be really nice to me, hoping I would tape it for him. And I, being the wonderful girl that I am, agreed to do it. I figured it couldn't be that bad. I'd go do something else while the show taped.

Monday, June 11th rolled around, and I popped the tape in at six o'clock, then I went back to doing something else. But I kept glancing at the television. Interesting stuff was happening, but not really enough to hold my attention. At least, not until the main event. Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit in a steel cage. Guest commentary provided by the now departed Stone Cold.

But as the cage match started, I moved down closer to the television in rapt attention. This wasn't anything like the wrestling I had childhood memories of. The wrestling I remembered seemed to be two big, sweaty guys pounding on each other with rights and lefts. I didn't recall seeing swandive headbutts and gutwrench suplexes and MOONSAULTS from the top of the cage! I was immediately intrigued and my interest was piqued.

I sat there, watching the whole match in silence, except for the utterances of 'Wow!' and 'Whoa ... did he just DO that!'. It was amazing.

That was the match that made me want to watch wrestling every week without fail. That's when I fell in love with Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit.

Now, as for a particular wrestler that made me sit up and go 'WOW!'. That honour is split between two particular wrestlers:

Edge and Chris Jericho.

Edge I think is particularly good-looking and Jericho has (had?) the charisma and talent to really make me sit up and take notice.

....

And thus ends my very first post on this message board and my very first post to a wrestling site. It was fun, I hope to do it again sometime. Seeya soon!

-Jessica

Jessica -- welcome to the party! (Keep posting -- you write very well.)

Ana -- Ooooh -- good question!

The first time I got into it was years ago (maybe the mid-80's) when the WWF had a show on NBC latenight -- was it after Saturday Night Live maybe? That was during rabid Hulkamania, Ultimate Warrior, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Randy Savage and the lovely Elizabeth, Jake Roberts. Lots of good stuff. I thought it was wonderful fun -- beefy guys doing amazingly athletic stuff. I've always been incredibly impressed at what these guys can do (& make look good!), without actually damaging each other.

I didn't have cable back then, so once that show went off broadcast TV, I lost track of wrestling.

I didn't really start watching again til a couple of years ago, when I happened across it channel surfing, & remembered how much I'd liked it. I've been re-hooked since then.

To this day I remain amazed at the stuff that they do, without (usually) getting damaged, and also the degree of improvisation that they can carry off. (This isn't a movie set or dance troupe where every move is choreographed to death. And really successful "winging it" is always impressive.) Throw in some interesting characters & plot development & I'm hooked.

Oh, and the guys are really hot.
(Sorry, I had to do that.)

---------------------
Edit: I've been reminded that "the show was "Saturday Night's Main Event" which NBC would run in the SNL time slot about once every month or two" -- thanks spf2119.

I started watching in the Hulk Hogan/Randy Savage/Ultimate Warrior era as well. But the WWF was only broadcast on cable or satellite and at that time most people in the UK didn't have access to it. However my brother in law did, I used to go around for a drink and end up getting hooked. I wasn't able to catch all the programming so it ended up more of a treat. I look back and cringe at how much of a mark I was then. I'm still distinctly markish, but nowhere near that late teen adolescent stage.

I lost touch with WWF during the mid 90's until I could afford to get satellite. It was a huge culture shock from what I had been used to but I still found myself hooked. I still watch and wonder how anybody can put themself through so much punishment and how physically demanding it all is. I love the cruiser weights, I still don't know how they do half the moves. I like the soap opera aspect of it too, although it is way over the top most of the time.

And Emma - you're totally right, the guys are really hot

Wow, what interesting answers! I can already tell I'm going to love hanging around in this forum.

Jessica- I can definitely see how a Kurt Angle/Chris Benoit match could easily get a person hooked. There's probably no better way to get introduced to wrestling.

Madame Manga- That's fascinating! Which game were you working on, by the way? We have several wrestling video games in my house, I'm wondering if I happen to own the one you worked on.
Miss Behaving- Hey, you know, I've never been ashamed of my mark-dom. It was Hulkamania that drew me in, and even though I don't like Hogan too much anymore, I still give in to my markish side. As a matter of fact, I find I enjoy wrestling a lot more when I just let go and allow myself to mark out.

Emma- the show you're thinking about is Saturday Night's Main Event.. I remember it well, because as a kid, I loved Saturday Night Live, but I was twice as excited when they'd play Main Event instead. That show always had an air of importance surrounding it, and it was really the only time back then you saw matches that weren't jobber squashes without ordering a pay per view.

And I agree- some of the guys are really hot. Some aren't, however. It's kind of hit and miss ;)

Well, it's great to be here, first of all. Actually, I just started to watch wrestling when I was a baby, and I was stuck watching it with my four brothers all day because I couldn't watch Smurfs in my sister's room. The habit just kind of stuck since then. But I will say things in wrestling have been way more fun lately. I do admit that things in the WWE are way better than they were one year ago with the Alliance, just because they had no idea what to do with all those talents at the time. Oh yeah, and the guys are hot! If it wasn't for the hot guys, I'd stop a long time ago. Oh, and I might get some gasps of disbelief out of you, but I'm not too big on the soap opera aspects myself. I just think it's too silly for me, and I'd laugh at it anyway.

I watched wrestling during to glory days of HulkaMania in the early 80's, and hadn't seen again it until a few years ago. We were at a friends house & his younger brother had it on the TV. I was appalled at what I was seeing! Val Venus was showing a film of him being orally gratified by some other man's wife. It was disgusting and demeaning to women. I told my friend that I felt this was inappropriate viewing for his 12 year old brother. But we watched the whole show anyway, and then they tuned in again the following week, and the week after that.

I swore I would not pay attention to it because I was a college graduate dammit, a professional woman and how could I watch this mysogynistic crap. And then I started to laugh at the stories and I found myself loving Mick Foley & his goofey Mankind character. I became a HUGE Steve Blackman fan and thought the stuff he did with Al Snow was priceless. I got excited by the Stephanie and Andrew/Test courtship. I hated the Heels & loved the Faces. I was a complete Mark and I was proud of it. We started having PPV parties and kept one TV on RAW at the bar during Monday Night Football. We even tried to find Summer Slam on TV in Hawaii on our honeymoon.

I have to admit that I don't watch as religously as I used to. I miss the streak of humor that used to run through the shows and the soapy storylines that kept me tuning in week after week. I miss Blackman and HeadCheese, and I especially miss Mick Foley. Now if only Stephanie & HHH would get back together. And I hate Biscoff. He just annoys me to no end. I know, that's the point. Again, I never said I wasn't a mark.

But I still watch, if for no other reason that to laugh at JR trying to sell it.

I guess my situation is closest to that of the Ringmistress. I grew up with a dad and two older brothers who were HEAVILY into pro wrestling. My brothers were big into Hulk Hogan and the Rock'N'Wrestling WWF - they had posters of Hogan and Savage all over their room. My dad, on the other hand, thought that the WWF was full of guys "dressed like your sister" (in other words, me - and I was in elementary school at the time) and preferred the AWA and what he could get of the NWA. My mother followed the WWF (loosely) to make sure that my brothers were not being exposed to any "bad influences" - naked women, heavy metal music, etc. I had to get interested in pro wrestling or face being left out of most of my family's conversations. I started out following Hulk (like just about every other girl I knew), but became enchanted with Shawn Michaels (initially based on looks, not workrate). My boyfriends in high school put me on to the "smart" side of wrestling, and I think almost every boyfriend I've ever had has been a pro wrestling fan to some extent.

Oh yes - the hot men do keep me watching. If all wrestlers looked like Eric Embry, I doubt I'd be quite as enthralled.

My grandma got me hooked on wrestling, believe it or not.

She had... no... she HAS the hots for Ric Flair and when I was a baby, she would take me to see him wrestle, whenever he was in Virginia. I think my first word was "WOOO!".

To address your boyfriends thoughts:

1) I admit to having the hots for a wrestler or two, or five, or ten but they're not the ONLY reason I watch.

2) EVERY boyfriend I ever had despises wrestling and calls it fake, gay, and whatever else people say about it. So I am forced to dump them.

3) I loved it as a kid, but peer pressure made me stop watching for 2 years. Then I thouught, "To hell with them, I miss the Undertaker" and got back into it again.

I worked on a little game called WWF Mobile Madness, for cell phones! Tiny 32-pixel-high wrestlers slamming each other. It was a very tight deadline, which was why I had to do a crash course on wrestling moves.

I'd like to do full-scale texture-mapped 3D wrestlers some day--I've certainly got the credentials now. ;-)

I was a little girl who flipped to wrestling on tv one day. Back when it was the wwwf, before Hulkmania first ran wild.

I loved Paul Orndorff and Piper. I watched for years until it got too cartoony. Watching a tape of the Scott Hall/Shawn Michaels ladder match got me hooked again. If you check the Tanya archives, I wrote about my fascination over the years. shameless plug It's called "If All You Do is Complain, Why Do You Still Watch?"

I love the athletcism, the drama and the men.

let's see if my laptop wants to work *this* time...

Like Stephanie, for me, watching wrestling was a way to fit into my family's conversations. My whole family, but particularly my cousins and brother, were fanatics as far back as I can remember. When my cousins babysat for us, we'd sit around and watch the PPV's they had taped. I'd guess that was around '88 or so. I don't think they really hooked me til my first show, 1992. Every time the WWF hit town after that, my dad made sure we had tickets. My brother and I still go to shows together whenever we can (little brat took my sign and got on TV). The characters got me hooked at first, but over the years, I've come to appreciate the athleticism, coordination, skill, and grace that goes into any match.
Yes, and the hot men :)

Ringmistress, you are graciously invited to my abode for Thanksgiving. My grandma makes the best biscuits and despite my attempts and my measure accurate recipe (she makes the biscuits from a recipe deep in the halls of her memory that reads: 'a pinch, a dab, and a handful'), I still can't make them like her.

Just don't be mad when I turn from Smackdown because there's a Women's gravy/mashed potato/pudding/yams match going on. Ugh!
