Last time I checked, ``puroresu'' was the Japanese term for ``professional wrestling.'' You'll find the Wrestling forum at the top of the list on the main page.

If you also like Mexican professional wrestling, also known as ``Lucha Libre,'' you can post about that in the Wrestling forum too!

Picked up some of this on galavision on the satellite over the weekend. And that was, ahem, weird. Of coruse I couldn't understand the spanish, nor the reason for an octagonal wrestling ring. So that was kind of a waste of my time...

You watched the wrong part of Galavision, then. The AAA is almost always shit. Stick with it, though; the CMLL is just fine.

I try to watch puro on Galavision when I can catch it. I must always catch the wack shows though. It's always like 7 guys all in the ring at once just kinda standing around waiting for stuff to happen. And when stuff DOES happen, no one ever wants to sell it.

I guess my problem with Lucha is that every time I watch it, all I see is one big train wreck. 2-6 wrestlers all hitting high spots for ten minutes and then someone gets pinned.

That's...um...exciting?

I like me some highspots, but after a while they start to lose their luster, you know?

Hmm, I haven't seen 10 minutes of highspots in CMLL since - I dunno. And AAA would have some weird run-in type thing in a ten minute fall, so that doesn't sound right either.

I think you're colofully exgarrating to make a point!

I think the quicker pace of lucha matches throw off people who haven't seen them - makes it look like it all must be worked out in advance because they're not used to that fast of improv. I think it's more that once you get used to working that fast, and everyone has a understand on how to follow one move with another, it can go that fast on the fly.

I think it's better if people watch the whole show (actually, about three shows - I usually like to give anything three chances to make an impact before I make an opinion on it either way, too many variables, and you need to actually KNOW the performers before you can judge them - though it doesn't always work that way) before the start to make comments about the whole entire history of lucha matches.

I think people make an assumption based on the WCW-ized lucha trios matches they saw that ALL lucha is like that;

I think that's that's the distinction WWE is making when they're talking about how they don't want the lucha style - it's just as much the Indy "hit 10 cool move for two counts" X-Division rap.

I think the WWE is pretty hypocrtical taking that stance (not to mention seemingly not letting Hurricane use the Vertebreaker on the same show) when Jamie Noble used a belly to back piledriver on Velocity....for a two count.

I think I'm getting off topic!

I think people don't understand that most lucha guys - at least most the CMLL guys I see - are a lot like the Chavo Guerrero submission style than the Rey Mysterio highfliers - especially as you get to the top of the card. The high flying moves will get you in the highlight clips, but only the solid wrestling (or gimmick from father, or political influnce) will get you to the top.

I think that's what makes Rey so great - defying the rules - but that's a topic for another time.

I think it was funny when DJ FrostyFreeze mixed up "puro" with "lucha."

I think, as much as you say out of the ring dives, compared too US guys, you see a less top rope moves in lucha. The middle rope is there for a reason! And it helps that it makes the top rope moves even more impressive if they're not used pointlessly every match

I think the toughest part of getting into lucha is that you have to abadon all your expectations and requirements of what a match should be - they've been doing it a different way, and they'll keep on doing it a differente way. I think you have to throw out the US concepts and focus on the rules of their universe or you'll be disappionted

I think it's a big effort to getting used to the different style, but it's worth it.

I think I need a nap.

I may have exagerated a bit, but I don't remember feeling any different. Honestly, in watching Lucha the few times I have, I've had the same problems that I did watching the luchadores in WCW. I enjoy the action while it's on, but I don't take anything away from it afterwords, to make me say, "Wow. That was a good match." Perhaps I'm just not into the characters enough to understand any sort of subtle psychology, or perhaps I'm just not used to the pacing of a Lucha Libre match, but I stand by my statement that a majority of the Lucha I've seen has been more Rey than Chavo, not all, but a majority. That doesn't mean that is what is out there, that is just what I have seen.

I bow to your knowledge of the subject, Cubs, which is much greater than mine. Maybe I'm watching the wrong things, or maybe all I'm catching is tapes of highspots (I don't get Gala), but for every person who's told me that "This is the match that will turn you on to Lucha forever", I haven't been suitably impressed enough to care.
So either I haven't been seing the right matches, or I just don't "get it".

In closing, perhaps this topic would now be better off in "Wrestling". But this has all been debated before.

I think Cubs is pretty close in his assessment, at least how I came upon CMLL. I started reading his recaps without having seen the shows. Then I got DirecTV and Galavision was introduced into my home. It took a month or so to know what was going on (and sometimes I still don't know what's going on), but then it grew on me. It's also enjoyable to watch the show, then read TCF's column to see what I missed. But he's right about it not being a spotfest. There's lots of history and psychologogy to boot. Learning Spanish would help too.

This is why I asked for a "Lucha for beginners" from Cubs some time ago. I do enjoy most of the CMLL stuff I see, but it would be nice to know more about what is going on. Cubs' recaps have helped a LOT, so I suggest studying them.

And Giant Silva blows.

Excalibur: This is why I asked for a "Lucha for beginners" from Cubs some time ago. I do enjoy most of the CMLL stuff I see, but it would be nice to know more about what is going on.

You know, I just watch Galavision and not all tapes (well maybe one), so there could be a quite different perspective with those differing experiences. Heck, if the tapes are all comps, they probably don't include the "solid but unremarkable" grounded/cheating based matches that are a staple of the TV show, and everything about the difference in a bucket.

Excalibur: So either I haven't been seing the right matches, or I just don't "get it".

Or it's just not your thing, which is perfectly acceptable!

I think you're also right about it this perhaps being in the wrong thread, but I'm going for a "too cool for the Wrestling folder" dealio so I'll have to think of something else.

Pieman: There's lots of history and psychologogy to boot. Learning Spanish would help too.

Don't I know it - apparently people who said "Ultimo Dragon announced his return" might not have been write if you believe the WO.com lucha guy - then again, it's not wise to believe him and he's coming back anyway so it doens't really matter except to me.

Eddie: This is why I asked for a "Lucha for beginners" from Cubs some time ago. I do enjoy most of the CMLL stuff I see, but it would be nice to know more about what is going on.

Meanwhile, in another universe somewhat far away, I was writing "I'm not doing a lucha FAQ because no one cares!" I think I might be wrong here too! Perhaps another thread is in order...

DirecTV. Abandon the cable. DirecTV is your answer.

Well, that would be the solution, except right now I'm living in a college Dorm. All we get is cable man.

It makes me sad. But at least Cable is easier to steal.
