Despite the fact that I am an old man and a Dad I always check out the VMA's for my yearly dose of pop culture and brain cell thinning. I got my money's worth this year with GUNS AND FREAKIN' ROSES! In addition to GN'R I was shocked to see actual ROCK N' ROLL performed on the show. The Hives can now consider me a fan. It was nice to watch a awards show on MTV and not have to put up with Rap Rock for once. The Hip Hop performances were tolerable because apparently someone had the forsight to turn their mics way down. Eminem put on a good performance as always too.

But the highlight of the night was easily Moby booing Eminem and Eminem calling a "little girl." I don't know about any of YOU, but if I was 4 foot tall techno DJ that weighed 40 pounds I would not mess with a rapper who raps about chopping up his girlfriend and throwing her in a river. Plus Rappers always have posse (sp?. I wish I had a posse.

Did I mention GUNS N' FREAKIN' ROSES PERFORMED?

While I was certainly surprised, I found Guns N' Axl pretty disappointing. Maybe it was just the shock of seeing a COMPELTELY different band behind him. At least give me Slash!
Still, they tried and their performance was pretty intense. Axl looks like he's thrown on a few pounds over the years. Kicking the habit can do that, I guess.
Otherwise, it was a pretty decent show. Jimmy Fallon blew the Wayans Bros. out of the water.

It was not Guns n' Roses. Just Axl Rose trying in vain to recapture some faint glimpse of past glory. They sucked the big one and showed why GNR should stay dead.

Jimmy Fallon sucked ass.

Yay for Kirsten Durst(?) telling him off.

BRITNEY IN A BONDAGE OUTFIT! That looked cool and created millions of new teen fantasies for the overhormoned high schoolers.

Springsteen rocked, nuff said.

Eminem is going to have his ass kicked one day. He talks tough when his bodyguards are close by which makes him a pussy.

9/11 tribute`````

Christina Agulera looked like she just finished making a porno by outslutting everyone there combined.

Pink rocked with a cool live performance of her radio song. Please don't tell he those were tattoos.

From the chatroom I was in last night when GNR was on (credit to 3zy):
"When Axl was running around, singing not very well and getting winded slapping hands with the humanoids, was I the only one that thought of the Ultimate Warrior?"

I skipped the award show but read the recaps. I have to catch the replay just so I can see the look on christina aguilera's face when she hands Eminem his award. But what's up with Michael Jackson and the Millenium Award?

I can deal with AXL bashing to an extent. Yes, he was winded. But I DEFY any of you to go on stage in front of the world after a decade long hiatus and NOT be excited/nervous. You might be out of breath as well if you did a 20 second primal scream as an intro to an abbreviated version of one of your hit songs, then ran around the stage like jo-jo the idiot circus boy. Give the man a break, it's not 88 anymore.
But you AT LEAST have to give credit to the band. Don't say "They sucked the big one..." If you're gonna bash anyone, bash AXL. The band was fucking tight. Tighter than when the "original" Guns was on the Illusion tour. And as for the whole "recapturing som faint glimpse of past glory" statement, tell me honestly that the crowd didn't love every second of his show. Past glory my ass.

As for AXL putting on a few pounds, I'll tell you right nwo that it's not a few pounds of fat if that's what you're implying. The man is a health nut (just one item on a whole list of insane behavior from him) and is most likely in better shape than ALL of us put together. He's not smoking anymore, he's not drinking, and he only had a real heavy drug addiction WAY back in the day. Jeez, people expect 10 years to go by like 10 seconds.

If he is in such good shape then there is no way he should have been out of breath in 30 seconds. He played New Year's Eve in Vegas and in Rio last year at a festival with his 'new' linep so there is no excuse for stagefright. If you are going to play a gig like that then you should be working out beforehand to get ready. You could do a warmup gig in a club somewhere and say you are trying out some new songs.

The crowd in front is full of friends of people that work for MTV. They are told to mark out and be hot for every act that comes on stage. It is a controlled crowd in the pit and in front.

Two years ago, the crowd was made up of people trying to get in. There was this little area nearby that all the producers were at and you could fill out an application or something to get in. It was all models and wannabe actors, so the chances of a bummy looking kid in addidas pants and a ratty t-shirt getting in where slim to none.

1) Screaming like that and then running around before resting will wind anyone.

2) Have you ever performed? Stage fright doesn't ever go away, though it may lose its edge over time.

3) 2 or 3 gigs aren't enough to ease the nerves for a show that has the potential to break you back into the mainstream.

4) Do you really think Axl and the band didn't rehearse heavily before this show?

5) Without a sound check and a working monitor, it is very difficult for a singer to do his job well. Those of us with instruments can just watch what we're doing and adapt. Singers don't have that luxury.

My thoughts:

I enjoyed the Axl Rose Experience. (It's not Guns and Roses with no Guns and one Rose. Then again, Tracii Gunns got booted before GnR made it.)

BTW, Pink spoiled the GnR reunion in the pre-show, when she said she wanted to see Buckethead. Her performance was second best of the actual show. (I didn't see Avril in the preshow)

And you do a 30 second primal scream and then sing a song that your voice can't quite handle anymore.

Eminem's performance was his worst to date. He couldn't keep up with his own backing track either.

Justin Timberlake is a second-rate Usher. In N*Sync, he's good. Alone, nothing special.

P. Diddy, Busta, and Pharrell lip-syncing wasn't anything I'd want to see again. Much disappointment.

Jimmy Fallon was very hit and miss. He was much better at the Movie Awards.

Best performance of the night was Shakira. Hell, she could've done just the drum solo and she still would've been the best.

The Triumph bit sucked too. I'm guessing there was obviously supposed to be more before Eminem pussed out.

I didn't watch the VMAs but I was happy to see that Dashboard Confessional won the MTV2 award.

The White Stripes' lego video got three awards but I knew they weren't going to get best video.

There should be a pool on when the next GNR album will be released.

Eminem had his worst live performance last night, but he EASILY amended for that with...

"Keep booing, little girl! I WILL hit a man with glasses!"

That's right, Moby! Keep egging him on! This should be more than enough material for Em's next single.
Jimmy Fallon just didn't do it for me. They really need a better host, because the recent wave of hosts (Fallon, Jamie Foxx) can't hold a candle to hosts from a couple of years ago (Shawn & Marlon Wayans, Chris Rock). At least bring in Mike Myers for a one-shot and see what he can do.

"That's right! You suckas better FIND somewhere to run! 'cause it's me - Booker T - not only am I the Scorpion King, but I'm the five-time WCW Champion - and I got a sword, too! Now can U dig THAT - SUCKAAAAAS"
-Booker T, Hollywood's next big superstar!

"Sing along with The Rock is now over!"
-The Rock after getting booed out of Long Island

Hugh Morrus is now using his real name. NO, he is NOT calling himself Hugh G. Rection!!

And that's the bottom line, because it's false! It's DAMN false!

You felt that he "EASILY amended" his shitty performance with his idle threat toward Moby? C'mon now. Moby is a straightedge vegan, 36 year old white guy who lives in NYC, not a thug, never claimed to be gangsta, weighin in at a buck-5, half pint. Do you think Em could find anyone MORE harmless to pick on? Seriously, I'm usually one of the first to defend Em (the boy has flow), but in all reality, that display was just flat out retarded. Way to be tough and thugged out.

Maybe he should find people to beef with that can actually put together a comeback on him. Maybe THAT'S why his most recent album was so fucking shitty.

Eminem has beef with Moby with Moby because many moons ago Moby called Em a "mysoginist." Eminem responded by saying Moby sucked. Moby than began wearing Eminem shirts to do interviews and shows in. Eminem responded with his diss in "Without Me." Thursday night Moby began booing Eminem prompting Eminem to respond.

Moral: Eminem is NOT picking on Moby. Moby started it and fueled the fire. Moby was the one who got the crowd to start booing Thursday and Eminem simply said what anyone of us would have said. I might have said something about all Moby's songs being used for car commercials, but thats neither here nor there.

Man I know WAY too much about rap feuds. I think I need help.

Hey Yo...

Here's my review of the entire show:

-Eminem and Christina Aguilara are trash

-Who cares about rap feuds, really? I'm not in grade school anymore so that shit doesn't entertain me, because BOTH are doing it for exposure.

-Britney Spears is trash, but I'd still pork her.

-Jimmy Fallon can now join Tracy Morgan (who's special "One mic" was awful) in the league of SNLer's who just aren't funny when they're by themselves. I think Fallon's humor was like when Magic Johnson shows up on the Tonight Show. It's kinda' cool at first, but after a minute or so it kinda' makes you want to tell him to leave.

-Performances? People watch this show for performances?

-Michael Jackson is scary. He and Marlon Brando need to remake the old classic Freaks, I imagine it'd be the scariest movie of ALL time!

All I got. Oh, and Pink looks good, too. I don't know what it is, but there's something about that girl that makes me say, "Now THAT girl IS SEXY!"

A friend of mine's sister's cousin saw Benoit walking through an airport.

- Eminem is an asshole. And not in the good way. Why does he make it his mission to rip on all pop groups and then act like a bitch when someone takes a shot at him? I used to love Eminem but his whining on all his records is getting old. Im sick of him crying and whining about his mom and Kim. We gave him his second CD to get all that shit off his chest. And no Em did not diss Jay-Z because he doesnt have the balls to rip on an MC with clout like Jigga. Only pop groups that cant respond on a record. Can you imagine the tear stained meltdown he would have if Jay-Z took a shot at him? Im SOOO wanting a respected rapper to rip on Em but out of respect for Dr Dre none of them do.
