1996 was a weird year. It was post-grunge, but before the spawning of this nu-metal crap, so a lot of cool stuff that normally would never have gotten on the radio got a pretty good amount of airplay. (Poe, The Eels, Geggy Tah, Prmitive Radio Gods, The Rentals, Superdrag, etc. etc. - Cake and Garbage both "broke out" then, too.)

Though they are huge, I'd love to see Dream Theater get some radio/MTV time. I can't say enough about this band. If you want to hear something cool, check out the medleys they do of some of their favorite songs on A Change of Seasons.
Though I was too young to appreciate them at the time, I've found Extreme to be one of the most intelligent and musically talented bands you could hope for. From all accounts, they were great live too. Unfortunately, they are only remembered for one ballad that didn't even reflect their sound. Nuno Bettencourt was a phenomenal guitarist (his current band is Mourning Widows) and Gary Cherone had one helluva voice.

She did have the modern-rock radio "hit" in 96 with Trigger Happy Jack and Hello - both of her albums are great efforts, including the one that came out last year.
however, modern-rock radio is afraid of females these days. apparently, they are afraid of females that can write songs that blow away the crap that's on the playlist. anyways, my rantings on this could take up an entire thread, so i'll just leave it at that.
Because I'm such a drooling fanboy of her work (my Benoit markdom pales in comparison to this obsession), and the nature of the post, I feel compelled to point out that the new Tori Amos album "Scarlet's Walk" is coming out on October 29. I'm counting down the days personally to it, and anyone who is tired of the usual pre-fab pap should be too ;)
You never know when you'll meet that special someone... the someone that's mysteriously blind to your flaws. or, you know, stupid enough not to realize that yes, you really are that cynical.
Absolutely rocked live(saw them open for Ozzy and Korn-before anyone knew who they were-in 95). Also saw them with singer Whitfield Crane in either 97 or 98(can't remember) at second stage of Ozzfest.
Broke up right after their most mainstream release and most polished album musically and lyrically(that's why Whitfield was at Ozzfest instead of Caputo).
Lead singer Keith Caputo released a more mainstream rock album(as in softer rock) and Guitarist Joey Z. and the Drummer are in Stereomud(they absolutely rock in studio and live-saw them with Drowning Pool and Sevendust).

Interestingly enough, I first discovered Dream Theater when I was a freshman in High School in 1992. I saw them afterschool on MTV(unbelievable, huh). It was the video for Pull Me Under. It ruled the school and when I saw that singer James LaBrie was wearing a Napalm Death shirt, I went out and bought "Images and Words" almost immediately. It was actually my first CD(along with Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Fire and Ice). The CD's came in those long cardboard boxes back then. I've been a fan ever since. They're UnF'Nbelievable. BTW:Was at the ROH show in Wakefield,MA Saturday(American Dragon got thrown into the barricade and he and the barricade crashed into me-pretty sweet except for the pain in my knee) and somebody came out to Metropolis-part 1(dammit I can't remember who). I think it was either Donovan Morgan,Michael Shane,or Paul London.
BTW:Dream Theater's first singer was horrible. He ruins all the great music on "When Dream and Day Unite." I really wish they'd re-record that album with LaBrie.
Also wanted to give props to John Hiatt

I've never heard anyone who has better arranged music. Do yourself a favor and download "Beautiful", "Rotten", "Nazis on My Radio", "Gravity", "Third Time Around".. hell, if you see his name, download.
Evan Olson
If you like Ben Folds, go check this guy out. He was Folds' roomate in college, and he released one album on a major label, the brilliant One Room. Recorded all the instruments and arranged it himself.. in one room, his bathroom.
Big Bad Zero
These are my boys! I've seen them live so many times, they're a Vegas band. Very good driving rock sound.

Mollys Yes
Tulsa band. Saw them open for BBZ once. Very nice flowing "grand rock". Lyrically great. Broke up recently
SOAK/Hot Rod Novocaine/dsb
SOAK broke up and Hot Rod Novocaine(although going to hotrodnovocaine.com now leads me to know they've become dsb) formed from their ashes. Mixes electronica and rock better than anyone I've come across.
Podunk
One of the best live band's I've ever seen. Similar to King's X in sound.
"You can save the planet, I'll save your seat"- Uncle Kracker, Better Days "Confucious say: Man with hand in pocket feel cocky all day!"- Crank Yankers

Didn't she have the song "Hey Pretty" last year,it go over for a little while.
Hell,he even had a concert on MTV but of course thats not saying too much
Rebecca: Oh,face it,you just hate everybody.
Enid: That's not true.I just hate all these extroverted,obnoxious,pseudo-bohemian losers.
Speaking of electronic/rock blends, try Splashdown. They broke up after label issues, but they were pretty good. They play traditional instruments in an almost inorganic way... it sounds a lot like Portishead.
I picked up Life of Agony's "River Runs Red" about 8 years ago. I thought it rocked, and I turned a lot of my friends on to it. Then I picked up "Ugly" without first listening to it, and was a bit disappointed. Haven't gone back since, maybe I should.
Clutch is one of my favorite bands. They've been around for a while, but hey still kick ass.

You may want to give it a few listens before you decide. Happens to me all the time. Actually when I picked up their third album(Soul Searching Sun), I listened to it once and returned it. I was so thickheaded about it not being as heavy as the previous 2 that I refused to give it a chance. Years later I re-purchased it from the used cd bin. It's really F'n good, but you have to give it a few listens and be open to the fact that it is not as HEAVY as the previous albums. LOA actually came out with 2 CD's since they split. One album has all unreleased shit: a bunch of Pre-River Runs Red songs, b-sides, alternate versions, and live songs; and the other one is a live acoustic CD from Amsterdam(I believe). Cool stuff, especially the pre-River Runs Red stuff.

YES! Splashdown was GREAT! They had the "redshift" ep which was insanely good, recorded the full-length for Capitol (Blueshift), then got shelved by the label. For a time, Splashdown included the full-length if you ordered the EP from their website.
As for Poe, yes, she did play at the R&R HOF last year that was shown on MTV... and when they show the recently recorded shows now, MTV has decided to attach the "legendary" label to each performer/band.
