This is just a knee jerk reaction by Infinity broadcasting. They are shaking in their boots because of the angry catholic letters and the FCC saying they will look into revoking their license at WNEW. The corporate suits are just trying to save face. If anyone could mobilize the O&A army, I'm sure there'd be more letters and nasty phone calls than the catholics could send.

O&A should rebound. They are a hysterical duo and have come up with some hilarious bits. I haven't been able to listen to them the past year due to my work schedule. Here's hoping they get on another station in the 7-11 slot in the NYC metro area.

The ultimate irony would've been if they were fired on a Wednesday.

Considering the Catholic stance on sex, I think the stunt is very offensive to them and I am not surprised they got fired.

The word "intentional" is the important one, which you ignored.

The INTENT of the bit was for the couple to get in, get out, and vanish without anyone (apart from the radio audience) even knowing they were there. The cathedral was but one on a long list of locations; it's not as if the contest was "Whoever has sex in the most places of worship wins." It worked perfectly during the last two Sex For Sams -- the station and FCC weren't deluged with calls saying "They said someone was having sex at our cathedral - BURN THEM!" when the contestants did it correctly.

To use an analogy, if you kill someone and it's unintentional, is it still a crime? Yes, but not murder -- more like manslaughter, which carries a lesser penalty. The O&A show got the death penalty for an unintentional circumstance.

Frankly, if I was a Catholic, I'd have been more offended by Stephen Lynch's "Altar Boy" song, which they played about once a week.

EDIT: Holy crap! Bizzle and I actually agree on something.

Apparently, Philly is FINALLY getting an ESPN Radio station. Mr. Tony was cutting liner notes for them the other day during the show. The funny thing is that the station (WCHR, 920) is one I've never heard of before and those call letters and dial position, according to what Ifound on the net, are a religious station in Texas.

That said, "nice" sports talk has no hope in Philly. 1210 tried it when they were "the game" and it bombed. And it foisted the horrible Big Daddy Graham, who of course ended up at WIP, onto us listeners.

C'mon, you can't have sex in a church, broadcast that fact on radio, and not expect the church to be majorly pissed about it, no matter what the "intent" may be. I'm not sure why if they got in and got out, it was suppose to be OK. It would be wrong whether they got caught or not.

Anyway, is this suppose to be one of their "hilarious bits"? I must have a much different sense of humor than a lot of people, because I just can't see the humor at all.

The thing that bothers me and is overlooked is that these guys were only fired for doing their jobs. The blame lies first on the dumpy middle aged couple trying to get exposure by screwing in a church. Next in line are the bosses at WNEW who only care about ratings and money and don't care who their station offends. Their bosses probably knew what they were doing and gave it an OK. Opie and Anthony are the fall guys, when the whole crappy station should be shut down by the FCC.

Ah, you can put the original blame for BDG on DeBella's old Morning Zoo. They played his "Let's Call In Sick" song somewhere around 4,739 times in the 1980's. (And he's not THAT terrible at sports-talk -- I'd rather listen to him than to Eskin, frankly, except that Eskin's so cute when prank callers work him up to a screaming fit. Somewhere I have an old tape of ESKIN on the Zoo, as DeBella's sports guy -- it's amazing how much different he sounded back then.)

WIP is to Sports-Talk as the WWE is to mat wrestling. Lip service is paid, but they go off on tangents at every opportunity. Of course, what _I_ want is for Ferrall on the Bench to come back.

Paul Mercurio is NOT a producer on the Opie and Anthony show. I can't believe that so many "reputable" news organizations didn't take two seconds to research that. What's worse is that it was Paul's yelling at the cops about this stunt that precipitated the arrest. Paul was always the guy that most of the other comedians made fun of (and when Rich Vos has better material than you, it is time to give it up).

I have listened to O and A for the better part of the year from WYSP. I found the show to be brash and controversial, but I dug the humor displayed. Of course they laugh at their own jokes, but so does every other radio talk show. Hell, I've almost given up on listening to Howard Stern because all his co-hosts sound insincere and pandering.

I always thought that O and A treated their fans better than almost any other talk show. Stern always belittles most of the callers to his show. Don and Mike are the worst in this department, as Don seems to HATE to even take calls from the listeners. O and A were usually willing to give credit when one of their listeners had something interesting to say. They were always putting over their "O and A Army."

I am upset that Opie and Anthony have to be the fall guys for this stunt gone wrong. It probably wasn't even their idea to put that church as one of the places for the "Sex for Sam" contest, and like I said it was Paul Mercurio who let the situation get out of hand. I hope that Opie and Anthony do find work somewhere else, because like VSP, I need my Stephen Lynch, Jim Norton, Jay Mohr, and Jim Breuer fix.

With one notable exception, the Kathleen Turner heckle. I'd get a chuckle if the people at today's rally started chanting "HEY, INFINITY -- PUT YOUR GODDAMN SHOW BACK ON!"

There's one thing I'm not clear about, as I've heard many conflicting reports -- were O&A _fired_ outright, or was the show merely _cancelled_?

If it's the former, they can go looking for work wherever someone will hire them (and since they touted Philly often as the source of their best ratings, there are some non-ClearChannel and non-Infinity stations available here...)

If it's the latter and they're still under contract as employees, they'd essentially be the Kevin Nashes/Goldbergs of radio -- paid not to work until the contract runs out, or tucked away until the furor dies down and brought back some time later under cover of apologies.

WIP's "guy radio" format is why I'm happy ESPN is coming to Philly (even though I only visit now). You can only hear discussions about the Godfather or candy bars for so long. I can't stand Eskin, but I love Missanelli, so it's always a balance as to whether or not I listen when I get teh chance.

Since we are talking Philly sports talk radio. Rhea Hughes and Angelo Cataldi have got to be the worst excuse for sports talk hosts ever. They have to be the biggest idiots at that station. One day they are touting someone and the next they make it sound like that person is the worst thing in sports.

I have come to realize that the best show on that station is the Saturday Morning Sports Page. During football season there is no better program. 2 hosts that understand the sport and give you a good perspective on all of Sunday's games. How they are on that station is beyond me.

I think that they actually give most of the weekend (since listenership is down) to actual sports. You have Don McKee, Didinger, my man Dick Jerardi and Rob Cherry, all of whom are great at talking honest-to-god sports.

The morning show? Don't get me started. I like Morganti and that's about it. Please come back, Tony Bruno.

I couldn't disagree more. (of course, I don't work in radio, either.)

I have moved away from the "security" of WIP and WFAN and now live in a region of the country missing major pro sports. I don't give a rat's ass about the AAA baseball team or the Arena (2!) team or the IHL team or the university that doesn't even have college university.

And, befitting the minor league market, we have minor league local sports radio, no matter how much they may brag about winning local awards. Thank God that the signal from the Sports Station in DC reaches all the way down here.

So please, give me ESPN Radio. Give me Tony Kornheiser and Dan Patrick, even Chuck Wilson and Chris Moore. (I don't want Jim Rome though). Give me Steve Czaban.

I'm way behind!

I listened to John & Ken when they first went to KFI from...somewhere on the east coast, I can't remember. This was back in 1992ish when I'd given up on listening to FM radio (except during lunchtime when I'd listen to one of the remix hours instead of Dr. Laura) - good ol' KFI, they'd give two hours a day to freakin' Daryl Gates but they'd never bring back Tom Leykis ;-) Wow, ten years and they're still calling themselves "more stimulating talk radio." Good ol' LA.

Anyway, John & Ken are great together - I always thought one of the "Trek This Week" guys and I would have made an excellent poor man's John & Ken if only we'd gotten the local talk station to give us a try, but I never got around to preparing a proper demo, and they never watched public access and "discovered" us. (For the two people who still know what I'm talking about, the other guy was Dan. Of course, HE was the "stable" one ;-) )
