Last night on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, they mentioned how the WWE's earnings report indicated they lost a lot last quarter, and buy rates are at their lowest ever. One of them mentioned that this may be caused by reality shows that give the same kind of drama as wrestling does. They also mentioned that while they don't think wrestling itself is dead the WWE might be. I would disagree and say they may have just ran into a down time, much like mid 90's and in a few years, popularity will be back up. What are your thoughts on this?

I wouldn't trust the guys at PTI to be able to read a financial report and know what it means. While business is down, from what I've read, they are still making money, just not near as much as they did in the same quarter last year.

I wouldn't recommend putting your lives savings into buying the stock (nor buying any amount of WWE stock at all), but I don't think they are close to going out of business either.

It always seems to me that the two buffoons on PTI hardly know anything about many of the mainstream sports on which they're supposedly "experts". That being the case, my confidence in their knowledge of Pro Wrestling is pretty thin. They always seem to me more eager to get themselves over as funny guys than to actually have any kind of meaningful discussion.

I take anything the mainstream sports media says about the WWF with a grain of salt. They don't know the business, and they sure as hell have never read a financial report. All they see is the WWF made $12 million last year for this quarter, and only $2.5 million this year for this quarter. It's the death knell of professional wrestling to them. They should concentrate more on trying to get Bud Selig to open the books on baseball. I want to see this supposed $450 million in losses. Or maybe trying to convince the MLBPA that they make enough money. Less time bashing Vince, more time bashing guys that deserve it.

Rest in Peace, Chick.

Nope. WWE's screwed.

When you take a look at the WWF in the early 90s, you can see that they were just simply clueless and that there was a lot that they still had yet to do. They had routine jobber matches, title changes were extremely rare, and the time and buildup between PPVs was well-paced. The WWF was holding back a LOT and the fans knew it. There were many boundaries that had yet to be pushed.

Granted, they were missing the breakout star power Steve Austin would later give them, but that was only part of the problem. How do you even CREATE a star in today's environment? Austin became a megastar, because he was against the environment of the crappy WWF. These days, being anti-establishment is the norm. What's so unique that could possibly stand out in today's environment? They've done everything that they can do.

These days, we see superstar vs superstar matches every week with PPV caliber main events. Title changes happen weekly and, when they do, they're completely meaningless. Wrestling was still "in the closet," too, and they weren't open about being purely entertainment, so suspension of disbelief was still relatively high. They can't go back on that now.

The illusion of real competition between the WWF & WCW, which was what made the latest boom even possible, is dead. That was the only legitimate thing about wrestling that ever existed.

Since the early 90s, they've had the biggest boom ever and they have no time for pacing, which is what will ultimately kill them for good. They can still be entertaining and Vince's business savvy may keep them afloat, but what we saw back in 1998 will never happen again, because there's nothing they can do to break out anymore. Making wrestling "legit" would render everything boring, but it's the only thing they can do to drastically change now.

Either that or, as was suggested earlier, they could bring in robots which are getting pretty high-end over in Japan now, but that's the only other way.

I always find it amazing when ESPN feels wrestling is worthy of there time. I wonder if wrestling will ever get an ESPY category. Doubt it.

I think it's just a temporary lull spawned by the WWE's attempts to make themselves mainstream. It seems like trying to get themselves respected has bitten the McMahon's in the ass. People know too much about wrestling and it's steadily losing the mystique that it had before. There were controversies before, but people used to say 'oh, it's just wrestling, so who cares?'.

The WWE tried to legitimize itself in the eyes of mainstream and big media markets by revealing who are the true wrestling fans. Gone were the stereotypes of 'Bubba' with a pick up truck, a Confederate Flag, shot gun rack, 6-pack of Bud, 3rd grade education, trailer park living yokel. Enter the Wall Street/Upper & Middle class, college educated, white collar fan. Hell, even actors, actresses, musicians, and athletes were singing the praises of the WWE, using catchphrases & guestures (DX's 'X', NWO's Wolfpac, etc)on field and in interviews.

By showing mainstream that we could read by making all the WWE's books bestsellers, making Rock's movie's box-office smashes, by making Playboy photo lay outs record breaking, by making CD's filled with entrance themes chart toppers, we have allow WWE to force media to recognize they aren't 'bad' because their fans (us) are good people. They basked in the glow of their successes, thanks to us. There was nothing anyone outside of wrestling could do to stop the wave that the WWE was having... Until the PTC, Lionel Tate, wrestlers dying left and right; most controversially, Owen Hart, sex allegations from Sable, backyard wrestling injuries, and the failure of the XFL.

How do you take the wind out of an obnoxious S.O.B. like Vince McMahon's sails? You just feed the machine (non-wrestling fans) negative press. You start to place blame. You start to point fingers. You make the WWE look like it's something to not want to associate yourself with. You try to make it look so bad, people would try to shame the real fans for watching and supporting.

Face it, the XFL was destined to fail. Not just because it sucked, but because it wasn't given respect by the media, NBC (the channel that aired it) included. It's what cost the WWE most of the money it lost, I believe. ESPN mocked it, newspapers avoided it, and no one watched it.

The real fans; however, didn't turn away. We're the ones giving the WWE the halfway decent ratings now. But then we were being stiffed with mediocre writing, listless talent, and just same ol' stuff. Alas, they are giving us new stuff and for the first time in a long time, I'm excited. I'm looking forward to SummerSlam. I'm loving RAW and Smackdown (sometimes).

I think it's a sign that all things are pointing up and with some consistency, the WWE will be back on its feet. Vince will be a billionaire again. Fans will come back. The WWE is only as rich as the fans are and economically, a lot of people aren't thriving. They'll be back when they can pay for T-Shirts, PPV's, and arena tickets.

Sorry for the diatribe, I just wanted to see how it would look if I wrote a lot of stuff.

I really hate when they bring people's wives and families into wrestling angles. Especially guys who have "cool" or "badass" personas. Sting was one thing; he's kind of an old guy who isn't too intimidating.
