Now, I've heard and heard the hype and it's getting to the point where I NEED some good virtual wrestling stimulation and I need it now! I haven't had a REALLY good experience with wrestling video games since No Mercy for the 64.

Now, my question is, how do these games match up, what kind of fighting system is it (or comparable, too) and is it true that all the REAL wrestling guys from WWE, Mexico and Japan are on there (with different names)? I've read a hell of a lot about it, but I only get bits and peices here and there about the game.

Also, is the Game Boy Advanced version worth getting, or should I get an emulator and download the SNES version?

The REAL question is, "Who Bettah Than Cory Dillon"!?

Fire Pro titles contain just about everyone who's active at the time of each game's release. US, Mexico, Japan, you name it - the names are mangled, but manually repairable, and the wrestlers look and move like the real thing. (Exception: the US GBA release disguises the appearance of US wrestlers, as well as twisting their names heavily.)

The fighting system is generally easy to understand. Your wrestler has moves for just about every conceivable situation -- four standing attacks, thirteen standard grapples, six rear grapples, four off-the-top-rope moves, and lots lots more. Grapples are strictly timing-based -- as soon as the wrestlers touch, whoever executes a move first gets the advantage, but pressing a button too soon or button-mashing is an automatic loss. (Whether the move is successful or not depends on the type of move, wrestlers' characteristics and how worn down each wrestler is.)

Moves are no more complicated to execute than one button with or without a D-Pad direction -- no memorizing complicated Acclaim-style "Up, Right, Right, X, X, O, 360 degree spin, do the Watusi, and hum Ravel's 'Bolero' in the key of D while your meter is flashing" special moves is required.

When creating wrestlers, EVERYTHING is customizable. There are no "move packages", and there are tons of stats to apply points to or dictate your wrestler's style with. Of course, certain moves' effectiveness will depend heavily upon your wrestler's characteristics -- fat brawlers won't fly as far off the top as skinny luchadores, for instance. Wrestler creation does involve either Japanese fluency or extensive usage of FAQs, however.

The very very best wrestling game you can buy remains Fire Pro D on the Dreamcast -- tons of guys, tons of new moves, newly-released moves downloadable from the Internet to your memory card, and Fluorescent Light Bulb Tube Barbed Wire Board and Electrified Exploding Barbed Wire Cage Death Match modes for when you're feeling nasty.

I've never heard of Fire Pro outside of Wienerville. Are these games sold in the states or are they only imports? Maybe I just never noticed them in the stores, but I've never heard a friend speak of them either.

As far as I know, they're mostly imports, with only a couple being released domestically. Anyone want to verify?

As the resident Fire Pro Expert I'll have to say, Yes, go get Fire Pro for GameBoy Advance right now.

The only Fire Pro that has been released Stateside is Fire Pro Wrestling for GameBoy Advance. The sequel, Fire Pro Wrestling 2, is coming out next month, but will be lacking the insanely awesome Management of Ring mode the Japanese version had.

The greatest wrestling game ever IS Fire Pro Wrestling D for Dreamcast, but the GBA versions are probably the best wrestling games you can get in the United States.

I picked up one for the Game Boy Advance a few months ago at the local Wal-Mart. I've never seen one for an actual console though.

Last Fire Pro game I got (the Playstation version, sort of a step between the Saturn and Dreamcast ones) I ordered from therage.com, IIRC.

Your best bet for playing a console based Fire Pro game in almost 100% english is Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium for the SNES. Though, this requires either using an emulator (such as zsnes) to play it on your computer, finding a rom (use google, you may even find it pre-patched), and getting the patch (from somewhere like Zophar's Domain), and then doing the necessary things to patch it and play. It's, sadly, still the only FirePro game I've played, but, you can have 80 created wrestlers.

Given the moribund level of the Dreamcast right now, it would not be out of the question to cheaply pick up a Japanese DC and a copy of Fire Pro. (BTW, I'd also get Giant Gram 2000, which is just as cool as Fire Pro D in different ways).

I just got my copy of Final Fire Pro and am anxiously awaiting figuring out Management of the Ring.

You're all so WONDERFUL. Why did they ever have to remove you from the continuity? You'd have made for MARVELOUS stories. You WILL make marvelous stories. And the FIRST story of the new world will be a story of REVENGE! -- The Psycho Pirate, Animal Man 23, May 1990.

According to Gamespot, Bam! is making a Fire Pro for the Gamecube (not an import, it says it's for U.S. Gamecubes). It is due out early 2003. Unforutnately, that is all the information they have. No screenshots either.

The GBA version available now IS incredible. And, if you know who's who (which isn't TOO hard), you can permanently rename each wrestler and federation in an hour or two.

It's cheap, too!

THIS was the prime reason I feared wrestling games until "SmackDown!" for the PS came out. With it's simplistic "Press button plus D-Pad", I learned to like wrestling games. However, I have mastered the move input for WWF ATTITUDE for the PS as well.

I've never played Fire Pro before, so I think I'll try that.

After lots of thinking I finally came to a theory: Any non-wrestler who gets attacked by the Island Boyz will immediately recieve praise from the Wienerville community.

There are three big online stores I'd recommend for import games, roughly in this order -- National Console Support (www.ncsx.com), Tronix (www.tronixweb.com) and The Rage (www.therage.com). All three are highly recommended. Stay as far away from Buy-Rite as you can.

If you know someone with broadband and a decent USENET feed, Fire Pro D tends to pop up relatively often (arrr! arrr! me hearties!) I preordered mine and received it on its first day of release, so I didn't take that route.

Note that even though the game is a little older now, the price doesn't drop -- imports in general, and particularly popular imports rarely get discounted. Even now, games like Tobal 2 still go for $40-50+.

Most of the real guys names can be changed (a quick sidenote, on most of the SNES roms, they have their real names already, except Benoit still goes by Wild Pegasus, his masks name).

One last question. I got the Super Fire Pro X Premium, and I can't seem to do ANY grapples but the really weak ones. I can't figure out how to do any moves but the punches! Can someone lead me to an instruction booklet or let me in on how to get some offense, or defense! Thanks.

Getting in a strong grapple in the Fire Pro games isn't as easy as it is in the US 'wrassling games. You have to soften your opponent up a goodly amount before you can do your strong ("A" on the SNES control scheme) grapples, and even more to do the "Y+B" grapple and the turnbuckle moves.

My general tip to weaken people at first is to mix up a few punches/kicks, when they get into grappling range do a "Y" grapple, then whale on' em when they're on the ground. Mix that up with some running attacks (toss 'em into the ropes if you can, of course, so they won't just sidestep) and you'll be able to nail some "B" moves after a minute or two.

A few "B" moves later, you should be able to toss 'em into the corner and hit 'em with your running corner move. Mix that up with more running stuff, and after another couple of minutes, you ought to be able to hit the big moves.

The important trick is picking a "style" for your guy, and picking moves that fit that style. If you're a power guy, you need to pick the right moves or it'll take *forever* to get your opponent weak enough to pin 'em. I don't remember if X Premium has it, but I'm pretty sure they use a letter system to show how potent the move you're picking for your wrestler is... from E to A, with E being the weakest.

Fire Pro Wrestling is the best game ever. It has more moves than No Mercy, and tons more wrestlers. There's not much of a story mode, but you do get to wrestle a bear. It would be nice if it told you which characters you unlocked though. Your computer partners are also incredibly stupid.
