With 9/11 coming up, there will be a lot of memorial services of the people who died that day, and the hero's who tried their best to save them. I was just curious to see what people thought the best way to remember this day would be. I think it would have been a great idea to make it a national holiday, but I don't personally want anyone to make a dime off of what happened that day. That might just be me, but unless it's going 100% to a reputable charity, then, I am against it.

Secondly, I have heard that the Florida St. Seminoles have the slogan, "Let's Roll", on the shirts. This was a phrase used by one of the passengers (I tryed to find his name, but couldn't) of the flight that crashed in penn. I believe. And there has been some media buzz surounding that. The journalists that I have heard have said that they don't see it as a problem, but Bobby Bowden should not have put that on a shirt to motivate his players, and that they believe that it was just an honest mistake. I agree with that position, and actually don't mind that they have it on their shirts, but like I said before, just don't market it. It cheapens what happened that day, and just seems disrepectful.

Well, I think most, if not all of the networks are going ad-free during their memorial specials. Good for them.

And about "Let's Roll": I think the only FSU-related shirts that should have that on them are the ones they hand out to the players. I don't mind at all, as long as no one's making money off of it.

A few takes on 9/11...

With all due respect, I think its time that we stop getting overly-sensitive about certain things. The term "let's roll" has been used long before 9/11. Rent just about any old western or action movie at your local video store, and you're bound to encounter those words. Using those words in a post 9/11 world doesn't make light or cheapen the events that happened that day. Where do we stop once we start declaring anything remotely tied to 9/11 taboo? Have we truly moved on if we have to continue walking on eggshells?

On another note, I disagree with any suggestion of making 9/11 a holiday. We didn't have to make 12/7 a holiday to remember that tragedy, and 9/11 should be no different. We've already gone through every emotion possible during and after that ordeal. We don't have to make another token holiday to feel better about ourselves and to validate our sorrows. The best way to honor those who lost their lives is to never forget, but also to show the strength we have to move onward.

Exactly. If there's one thing I don't want to see, it's September 11th mattress sales in ten years time. Trust me, until everyone who was living in 2001 passes away, we'll remember 9/11.

So true.

People that are still having problems moving on should seek professional help. I mean that in a good way.

I work for a TV station in Ohio (but grew up in NYC) and rather than concentrating on what's going on in NYC, we're actually taking live the Ohio Statehouse rememberance ceremonies.

I'm not too crazy about this- it's nice that they're remembering it, but Columbus, Ohio wasn't attacked- New York was- and do you really want to go head to head as competition?

Yes, something horrible happened, but you don't have to try and trump the rememberance ceremonies of those who suffered first-hand.

Kind of another stream of thought here:
It's been a real crappy summer for tv news. West Nile is being totally overblown, as are child abductions- abductions are a horrible thing, but across the nation, last year, we've had double the number of abductions than we've had so far.

okay, i'll stop before i get even more long-winded.

Well, in a way, isn't it good that abductions are getting attention? Hopefully, this'll bring about laws or some other sort of preventative mesure. That said, it is getting annoying, and that the only people getting attention are ones where there's footage or pictures of cute kids. It's the Summer of Sharks from last year ALL OVER AGAIN. (sigh)

Fuzzy & Swordsman are right. People are upset. One of you referenced Pearl Harbor? Well, the war was over THREE YEARS after Pearl Harbor. It was wartime, so the American people could recover more quickly...because they had to. Their country needed them to move on and whoop some Japanese ass. This time, it's peacetime. It's been a year. The wounds are still fresh. The images are still fresh in our minds. With the media-laced culture we enjoy now, everyone saw the second plane. It's not something you can forget easily. It will take a least a decade for everyone to recover from 9/11.

So, what to do? National holiday? Perhaps. At least in the same vein that Rememberance Day & Veteran's Day are. Face it, most people won't go to work or get a lot of work done anyway, so don't punish them for it. If you want a day off, take it. Spend time with your loved ones. Fly a kite. Go for a swim. Enjoy the freedoms we all have. And remember those who have died valiantly defending them, in countless wars and attacks since 1776.

The Constitution entitles everyone to "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Use 9/11 to enjoy that, and remember that.

If you make 9/11 a holiday it'll just be like x-mas and new years. Party from Labor Day weekend through 9/11 day. And remember, this comes from a person in the one state that still celebrates V.J. Day in August. The More Extended Weekends, the better.

I work in a Facility where the local union has V.J. off. I guess it's called Victory Day in RI right? I don't know why union guys in NEW JERSEY need it off, but it's convienent for an extra 3 day weekend in August. I would imagine that "9-11 Day" would turn into the same thing.

Yeah but why V-J day? I know that it was the actual end of the war, but V-E day was much more significant in the grand scheme(especially since May-August 1945 was pretty much getting closer to the islands and trying to persuade Japan to surrender. Especially the last month. Thank god for the atomic bomb or else the war would've gone on for years...)

Is Sept. 11 being called "Patriot Day," or did I make that up? If so, that has to be the silliest "name" for a day I've ever heard. Some guy sweeping up the bathroom who got run into by a plane and died is not really a patriot.

V-J day is celebrated instead of V-E day because their already is a holiday in May, Memorial Day. Now in August, there would be no holiday without V-J Day, so you get a 3 day weekend between 4th of July and Labor Day.
As for Patriots Day, they already celebrate that in Mass. on the 3rd Monday in April to celebrate the battles of Lexington and Concord, or just so the Red Sox can play an 11 A.M. game.

I heard this on the radio yesterday:

Indianapolis Mayor Part Peterson will mark the one-year anniversary of the tragedies by encouraging public service. A good number of city workers will be on Monument Circle, helping sign people up for public-service organizations.

I think this is actually a pretty classy idea.
