I know what you mean about enlisted personnel in Starfleet. There was Yeoman Rand and O'Brien. Voyager had a couple from the Equinox and all those survivors got busted down to crewman first class. But still that isn't even close to the 80% that you would expect. Hell, away teams are always made up of like 5 officers.

well, it's been patently ridiculous the way the whole enlisted/officer situation has been addressed by the franchise as a whole. in one episode of DS9 Worf was chastising some Station engineering personell and O'Brien replied that he shouldn't be so harsh on them because they hadn't been to Starfleet Academy. But the knowledge required to operate most of the equipment on the station and ships seems to require that level of training
I can't really see the aspect of families aboard either though. They were in enough dangerous situations that I just can't realistically see having spuouses and children aboard when attacks are practically imminent. How many of the deaths at Wolf 359 were civillians? I can see the Spouses possibly accepting the fact that they know what they are getting into when they go aboard, but to put their own children in harm's way is beyond suspension of disbelief.
The whole situation with O'brien has been mishandeled because when we first saw him and even in the last episode (continuity!) he was at the nav/helm and an LT. he was referred to as "Chief" because he was the Chief Transporter Operater. But when Worf's father visisted the E, He told O'Brien that he had been a "Chief Petty Officer" as well, the first time in TNG that any enlisted personell were refferred to.
and as far as the away teams, there is no way NOW that any command officers go on boarding teams or even in a forward capacity in field missions. I don't see that even in the future, a Captain or XO would lead or go on away missions when they have obviously been so dangerous.

I have a hypothetical (or conjecture as they say in the ST Encyclopedia) about the Romulan situation. The Two habitable planets in their binary system (this has been established) are Romulus and Remus. The suns are Romus major and Romus minor and for astronomical purposes are refferred to in plural as Romii (kind of like Cactus/Cacti.)Maybe the Remulans were already there and the Romulans took over, kind of like how Europeans took over the americas and the Remulans are the Indians.

Well, there's also the fact that he was a Lt. since season 2, and they had to bust him down to ensign in "Realm of Fear" in season 6 (where Barclay sees monsters in the transporter) so Barclay could outrank O'Brien and order O'Brien to transport him. No one ever said that Trek writers were sticklers for continuity.

Poor Wil Wheaton, Wesley's scene was cut.

Wesley haters everywhere rejoice. And if there were anyone that liked Wesley, they'd be sad... but, are there even people who liked Wesley?

I have to agree about the away teams. On TOS Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu or Chekov, and 3 redshirts would beam down. So who was in charge of the ship? Well, obviously Scotty but did he sleep? Or what if there was a battle. Enterprise only had 4 command officers Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and Sulu.
TNG at least Picard stayed on board but same problem. DS9 was similar. The one good thing about Voyager is that since Janeway sucked and got half her crew killed they needed to use the officers on the away missions.
But the worst is Enterprise. Archer, that Vulcan chick, Tripp, and Malcolm shuttle down. So who is left? And Archer didn't even know the name of his #2 engineer. The ship only has 84 people he should know every single deck scrubbers name much less a friging Lt. Cmdr!
What all the Star Trek shows need is someone with some actual military experience to run things through so tha they actually make sense. As a die hard Weber fan the military vagueness pisses me off.

At some point during the run of DS9, "Chief of Operations" became its own rank, and O'Brien was adorned with an embroidered insignia on his collar. I first noticed it in "Hard Time," but it very well could've been there longer, if not for the entire run of the show.

Hahaha. Good.

They should had one bit on TNG where they showed the special holodeck program where all the crewmembers get to beat the crap out of Wesley.

Well, everything I read about Remus being an extreme environment makes me think that the Remas are just mutated Romulans. Probably the dregs of society that they banished to this world to mine or something, and they just evolved their own culture and became mutated due to the extreme environment.
It makes sense to me that Janeway was promoted. First off, she did accomplish a great deal. An insane amount of intelligence on the Borg, preliminary contact with dozens of worlds, Slipstream technology, among others- the accomplishments go on and on. Many say that she was a terrible captain, and while I will neither agree nor disagree, if that is the case, then it makes more sense to promote her. She had enough going for her to make the promotion "believable" and that is the best way to get her out of the chair. Besides, if she was a GOOD captin they would probably promote her anyway, because she is damaged goods. Captaining a lost ship for 7 years with virtually no contact with a command structure in that kind of military is bad in the long term, because it would be hard for her to re-assimilate. So just promote her, and use her experience.
I hope they just quit all together with movies that keep all of one cast together. Break up the casts, use 2 or three here and there, and you solve that whole promotion issue. Who cares if Data is a Captain if you can have him and not the Enterprise?
Anyone read the "New Frontier" books? Captain Calhoun is bad ass- I always wanted to see a show/movie of that crew....
