I am in the market for one of the latest generation game systems, and I can't decide between ps2 and x-box. It seems as though I have heard about problems with the ps2 not working after a year or so, and I was curious as if anyone had had that problem. Also, it's kinda hard to go with x-box given their limited titles available. Any help would be great.

Having owned both systems, I'd have to go with the xbox. Although I hate all things microsoft, it really is a superior piece of machinery. The hard drive is gigantic, so no more worrying about memory cards, and they put out those new smaller controllers that fit much better in one's hands. I sold my ps2 not long ago because I got very frustrated with it. The damn thing wouldn't play certain dvd's, and the only way to fix that problem was to download the newest set of dvd drivers from the net. So far, my xbox has had no problems at all playing dvd's.

You commented about the limited title selection for xbox, but there are most likely five or six games that will keep you occupied for a long time to come. Project Gotham Racing and Halo are the big ones, but if you like sports games, specifically baseball games, then World Series Baseball is the way to go. Of course Tony Hawk 3 is there, Rallisport Challenge, the Madden games, and the Sega Sports games. I was a Sony fanboy for a long time, but the ps2 just disappointed me.

You should also check into getting a gamecube. Nintendo is still god when it comes to creating their own videogames, and this coming year is gonna be fun with Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, and a new Zelda game.

(Periodicity: three months or so.)

My take: _absolutely_ PS2. There are a ton of games that are cross-platform, so I look at the major exclusives between the two. The PS2 has Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and DDR lined up against Halo, Project Gotham, Shenmue II (which I have on Dreamcast already) and, er... well, you'd better like Halo a whole lot.

(Not that there's anything wrong with the cross-platform games on the Xbox -- just that they're not a system-seller by themselves. I can play Sega or EA Sports on PS2 just as well.)

Advantage two: the PS2 has a massive advantage in installed user base, particularly in Japan. More games in Japan == more quirky titles that end up being localized and released here. That variety is why I bought the PS1 in the first place (I held off until games like Motor Toon Grand Prix started trickling over). I like huge game libraries -- it leads to fun oddities winding up on the shelves and in the clearance bins.

Advantage three: Microsoft blows goats.

Advantage four: Grand Theft Auto 3 and beyond. Enough said?

As for DVDs, I have yet to play a movie DVD on my PS2. I have a "normal" DVD player for that, and will be investing in a second one soon (region-free and PAL-NTSC conversion, mmmm.)

The GameCube is a curious beast -- either you're into the Nintendo flagship titles or you're screwed. Of course, millions _are_ Mario/Zelda zombies, so it'll stick around for a while. (Is it me, or are the commercials for Super Mario Sunshine the _worst_ marketing campaign for a game since the invention of fire?)

EDIT: The GameCube has Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. THAT I want, if only to experience how the game screws with your head as your sanity drops.

Gamecube. Oh, I'm sorry. Was that not a choice?

Count me in for the PS2. As has been said, the PS2 exclusives are a hell of a lot better, overall, than the XBox. XBox seems to be obsessed with graphics over gameplay, and that's reason enough for me to say "no thanks", hard drive or no.

Plus, if you're going to be using your system as a DVD player... with the PS2, you can do it cold out of the box. You have to buy something else before you can do it on the XBox.

So far, the only thing I've seen on the XBox (that isn't on PS2 as well) that I've really said "Wow, that's a game I'd buy a system for" was Morrowind. Too bad Morrowind on PC's a hell of a lot better, and has a campaign designer to boot.

However, Gamecube's also a very fine system. The selection's limited, but some of those games are *nice*.

Here's all you need to know:

http://www.somethingawful.com/firemancomics/consolewar.htm

Although if that decision isn't good for you (even though it is the best), I would throw in an X-Box vote. the chipset used in the system is so much more advanced than the competition. Also, if you hate Microsoft, you should buy one. Each system sold accounts for a loss of $200 (according to current production costs and retail price). Plus, the PS3 (set for release in 2004) will almost certainly be backwards-compatible.

Of course, you COULD buy all the systems you consider, seeing as a system is the cost of four new release games anyway.

I dig that crazy shoenerd, yeeeeah!

But I have to wonder at the reasons you're giving to pick up an Xbox.

The chipset is, indeed, more advanced. But all that (and ease of development, which is another "issue") really means is it has potential. Which, as any Dreamcast owner can tell you, only takes you so far.

The price, well... yeah, Microsoft loses money on the systems. So does Sony, to a lesser extent. So did Sega. The difference comes with the software, and (for the bottom line, which doesn't make any difference unless you're working for one of them) the user base, which is still heavily in Sony's favor. I'm all for Microsoft losing money, but that doesn't exactly make for a compelling reason to get the thing. That'd be like picking up a Dreamcast because you think Sega sucks. Yay, Sega's gone... now I've got this cool plastic doorstop!

And picking it up because the other guy's gonna come out with a new system in two years is just silly. Hell, there'll more than likely be an Xbox 2, not to mention whatever Nintendo's next generation system'll be (GameTrapezoid? GameKlienBottle?). Yeah, he'll be able to play the old games two years from now... maybe... but that doesn't exactly make it any more fun tomorrow.

My opinion's already there. But, what it really comes down to is what the buyer prefers. Best thing? If you know people who've got them, ask 'em if you can play 'em. Or, if there's a video rental place that rents the systems, plop down the twenty bucks to rent 'em, and pick up a game or two. I'd rather blow twenty bucks and a weekend on a system I don't want than buy it, be out two hundred or more, and have it gather dust.

But, so far, the games aren't.

Some of the cross-platform games look better on Xbox, I'll grant (Max Payne comes to mind)... but they still look pretty damn good on PS2, where you have a LOT more games to play. Are somewhat enhanced graphics (which aren't that different for most games) worth giving up exclusive, popular game series and works of art like GTA3?

The PS3 is a nonentity right now; speculation on what it will or won't do is a bit silly. (Those who looked two years ahead were once sure that the N64 would be CD-ROM based and have Squaresoft's support, then later "knew" that its 64DD bulky-drive would revolutionize gameplay, for example.) If you're going to buy a system, base it on what's out now and in the short future, not what you hope will happen well down the road.

I'm looking at the Xbox and PS2 2002 release schedules now, just for reference. There's an awful lot of duplication there. Xbox gets Dead to Rights first; PS2 may not get it before Christmas, but gets Run Like Hell. PS2 got Medal of Honor: Frontline and MGS2 first, and gets Haven: Call of the King first; Xbox may get a slight head-start on NHL2K3 and BloodRayne. Back and forth it goes, but it ends up relatively equal.

But the PS2 has GTA3 now, and gets GTA: Vice City (hopefully) in October. What's on the Xbox release list that can excite me like those do?

PS2. X-Box will basically die, and only live by the umbilical cord of Microsoft. How do I figure this? Simple, the law of "If'n there's no where to rent games for a system in a small town, it is quite indicitive of the fact that it will die a painful death."

Case in point, when the Dreamcast came out, there was no where around here to rent games for it. It died. When the Jaguar came out, there was no where around here to rent games for it, it died. When the 3do came out, there was no where to rent games for it, and it died. When the TurboGrafx 16 came out, there was nowhere around to rent games for it, and it die3d. When the Neo-Geo came out, there was no where to get games. it died (well, that had the help of having damned expensive games). There ain't nowhere to get x-box games here, it will die.

So, go around to the local rental places that you rent stuff at, and figure out what they have better rental support for, then see which one has more exclusive games you want to play, and if the one with the exlusive games you want to play has the best support from video rental places, get that. And as for the cross platform games, it ain't about what version looks better, but if one version adds something substantial to the gameplay over another.

And, I think a gamecube is worth getting just for Super Monkey Ball and Eternal Darkness (much like the n64 was worth getting for the wrasslin' games, and goldeneye or perfect dark).

Fuzzy, what systems did your town support, exactly?

I own a PS2, and I've enjoyed it immensely. Of course, I only have four games for it, but FFX, MGS2, and GTA3 make up for the abomination that is Smackdown. And I've *liked* the Smackdown games...

My only beef with it is that I bought Buffy Season 1, and it played fine all the way through, until the penultimate scene of the penultimate episode, when it suddenly decided it could no longer read it. I have yet to learn if its the disk or the player, but it did previously play fine in two other DVD players.

I also like the PS2's backwards compatibilty. I can still enjoy all my old games without having to have another system around.

That said, I haven't touched the other systems outside of playing Pikmin and Super Smash Bros. Melee at McDonalds. If I had some more money to throw around, I'd buy a Gamecube. X-Box doesn't interest me.

I want to get up and do something. I just... can't.

Startin' from the NES (as in, as far back as I can remember):

NES (all 3 places at the time)
Sega Master System (one place, which was only in business for two years. They rented and sold video game systems, and sold computers)
Atari XEGS (same as SMS, they probly even rented Commodore 64 games)
Genesis (all 4 or 5 places at the time, as well as both the cd thing and 32x, you could get all 6 or 8 32x games around here)
SNES (all of the rental shops)
Playstation (All of 'em at first, then I think 2 stopped due to too many damaged CD's)
N64 (all, rental places 'round here love cartridges)
PS2 (I know of 3 offhand that do, the other two might)
Gamecube (I know 2 offhand, the other 3 probably do)

I don't count the portables. But, as of now there's no where to rent a Playstation or PS2, the place where I work at stopped renting out PS2's about 6 months ago, since both the ones they had broke, but we rent out the gamecube and n64 (which people actually still rent).

OK, I'm the BIGGEST 3DO SUPPORTER EVER, but even I have to admit that the fact that 3DO lasted longer than the Dreamcast in the US is a TRAVESTY. But still, that should be enough to disprove your theory. Even though Dreamcast still outsells X-Box AND Gamecube in Japan.

ANYWAY, this is an issue about which people SHOULD NOT ARGUE. It's the same as PC/Mac, only MORE pathetic because game quality is completely based on opinion ONLY. Might as well argue about chicken and fish.

I'LL HAVE BOTH, THANKS. Now get of my back, stewardess.

I guess this decision was so hard because I have played some of both systems best games. FFX, Madden 2002, GTA3 and MGS2 come to mind for PS2. But playing Genma Onimusha, Spiderman, and Max Payne, x-box has some nice games to it's credit, and I haven't even touched halo yet.

I tend to be a rpg and sports freak, so if it's final fantasy or madden I probably have it. I want to get into FFX but I hear the game is average against the other games in the series. GTA3 is pure violence at its best and there is no way you can't love that. I wouldn't mind playing silent hill 2: restless dreams, and being brought back into the world of survival horror.

X-box is stunning to look at, and there is no doubting that. The problem I have come into is in reading the reviews of the games, I liked GOni, but I hear that is a 10 hour game, w/little replay. Spiderman I've heard is repetitive, as is Max Payne, but I could deal with that, because that game is awesome on the x-box. It didn't make sense, but the control scheme really fits the x-box better than ps2 to me. I'd really like to play Morrowind, Ico, and Halo though, so I guess this is why the choice is kinda hard to make, thanks for the help though.

Halo is a decent game, but if you haven't played it yet, you're gonna be REAL disappointed, because it's hardly the "Greatest Game Ever" most of the gaming mags tried to make it out to be.

I still say to just go with a Gamecube. Super Smash Brothers Melee, Super Monkey Ball, Pikmin, Star Wars Rouge Leader, Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness now (not to mention cross-promotional stuff like Tony Hawk, NHL 2002, Madden, etc.), Mario Sunshine in a week and a half; a really interesting-looking game called Animal Leader next month; Metroid in November; Zelda in February; Star Fox, Final Fantasy (~!) and Perfect Dark at some as yet undetermined point in the future,

If you're insisting on one of the two, get a PS2. Grand Theft Auto III and Final Fantasy X make the whole system worthwhile. (And Smackdown is the best of the next-generation WWE games to boot - although it still ain't that great.)

I think you mean Animal Crossing. Animal Leader is now being called Cubivore for the US, and isn't coming out until the end of the month.

And how could you list Monkey Ball in your list of good exclusive games, and NOT mention Monkey Ball 2, which comes out the same day as Mario?

PS2 Definatly.

I'm a PS2 freak,I get 2 PS2 magazines a month.(OPM & PSM)

The way I have fixed a lot of DVD reading problems is buy a 20 Dollar remote with a cd and it updates your driver and you save it on a memory card.

This works really especially if you have a U.S. launch day PS2 like I do.

What I like about the GameCube:

* It's getting a Fire Pro title. w00t!
* Easy import play, either by modification or by boot-disc, a huge advantage over PS2 or Xbox.
* The GameQube (Panasonic DVD-playing variation) is expensive, but blows away all other consoles on aesthetics.
* Games like Eternal Darkness and the acquired Resident Evil licences are at least a token effort to attract an older gaming audience.
* Fifty bucks cheaper. Think of it as a pack-in game that you can select.
* Other than Nintendo, nobody's ever gotten a console<->handheld hybrid right. Upcoming games with GC<->GBA functionality might end up being what the PocketStation or the Dreamcast's VMU games/NGPC hookup should have been.
* Final Fantasy games are coming to the console. (Just not the ones that most people would want to play.)
* Many cross-platform games coming.
* So screw me, I like the Andrew W.K. song in the commercial.
* The typical franchise titles (Mario/Link/Pokemon/Metroid/etc.) you'd expect on a Nintendo console.
* It is going online later this year (so, to answer WyldeWolf's question, you _will_ be able to visit Wienerville on it before long), with a similar strategy to Sony's -- i.e. Nintendo provides the modem, but leaves the rest to the game companies to provide.

What I don't like about the GameCube:

* If you don't care for those franchise titles (which I don't -- call me a heathen, but I never was much for 3D Mario), you're left with Eternal Darkness, Pikmin and the Monkey Ball games as worthwhile exclusives.
* My nagging doubt as to whether "mature-themed" titles like ED and RE foreshadow a wave of similar games, or if they're going to be anomalies in the GC lineup.
* The WORST... COMMERCIAL... EVER for Super Mario Sunshine. If Nintendo is at all serious about making those over the age of 12 want their console, crap like that has to STOP. The commercial makes Captain Planet seem subtle.
* It's doing far better than the Xbox in Japan, but still trailing the PS2 significantly there.
* Much like the Xbox, there's definitely good stuff _coming_... just not much to play for it _now_.
