Sometimes it just all comes together. Bonds is a great player, at the right time in his career. They call it the zone. Think about it, Roger Maris was essentially a nobody, before he hit 61 in 1961. Does make his accomplishment any less phenomenal because he had not done anything like that before? Right place, at the right time, he was just in the zone.

Hey, just because he's old doesn't mean he can't hit anything out, and it doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to be getting worse as he's getting older. I mean, look at Randy Johnson if you want an example of that; early in his career, he was all over the place. Now he's older and doesn't walk as many as he strikes out any more - nowhere near as close.

I never realized Bonds had LASIK, though. That does make some sense as to how he got substantially better; after all, it's not like he was some light-hitting nobody, and if he can see the ball better out of the pitcher's hand, then he then should, in theory, be able to react faster on it, resulting in more homers (his swing helps on that, too).

To Grimis: 24 homers, 29 homers. That's not a staggering difference between Bonds's jump and Anderson's jump. Career year? Without a doubt for both; last I checked, the latter was languishing in Cleveland somewhere. Steriods? There's a possibility with Anderson, but not too much, I don't think. I doubt Bonds is on them (said it before), because you would think that he would've hit 73 before last year if he was juicing, huh?

Brady was released a couple of months ago actually and is not playing anywhere as far as I know. Although of course the 51 homer season overshadows the rest of his career, he was far from a bum the rest of the time. He was a quality leadoff hitter.

On Monday, USA Today had a whole page devoted to listing every homer that Bonds has ever hit, the date on which he hit it and the pitcher he hit it off. I hate to be the poor sap who had to spend his weekend compiling that.

Just a note: I saw homer #549 in Montreal off of Graeme Lloyd. It was awesome.

Granted. The reason that I mention Anderson is the fact that I remember watching a majority of the games in '96 and noting how much bigger he was. The difference between Bonds and Anderson is that Bonds was a great player before he ever hit 73. Anderson was a decent ballplayer, but never had a near MVP season like he did in '96 before that. Remember, Maris hit 40 and won the MVP in '60 before hitting 61 in '61.

I'm not sure I can agree with any of this. And I know I'm probably about to get flamed up the ass, but I gotta say this:

I don't think Barry deserves what he has, including 600 homers and respect of anyone.

Reasoning:

First off, we know that recently its become easier to hit it out of the park. Don't try to argue. The ball is juiced. The athletes are taking drugs (whether they're considered legal or not, they're drugs). The San Fransisco ballpark was built so that Barry could get a few more out of it. This is not even close to the situation that was, where 400 home runs was a great accomplishment.

Secondly, Barry is not that good. If you look at where he was before recently - and how much his numbers jumped just in the last three years, you see that, while he may have been good, he does not belong in the same breath as any of the men he is now being compared too.

Sorry, its done now. But I had to get that off my chest.

Yeah, Barry really sucks...

A career that spans 1986-2002, playing at least 100 games every year.

Including this year, he has a career BA of .294, averages 35 HR per year, 95 RBI. 11 straight years of 30+ homers. Regardless of time and circumstance, he has hit 600 homers in his career. Just to be able to have that long a career these days is amazaing. Most players don't. At least not as productive for as long...

And to top that off, he actually plays in the field for all of those years. No DH years in the AL yet.

I agree that the game is different than it used to be, but he has played within the rules (as far as anyone knows), and has done it better than many, many others before and during his time.

He deserves all the accolades he is getting. IMHO, he actually deserves more!!!

My office mate swears it has to be LASIK surgery that made the difference. I suppose that argument could be made as well.

Bonds' homers since Pac Bell was built:

2000: home 25, road 24
2001: home 37 (led league), road 36 (led league)
2002: home 13, road 20

There goes that theory.

Hell freezes over... I think I actually agree with T.R. on something related to baseball.

I can recall that, virtually every time I see a Giants game when they're at home (living halfway across the country, that isn't too often, granted), they seem to mention how Pac Bell Park isn't really tailored for left-handed hitters, although you wouldn't know that by looking at Bonds. For the life of me, I can't seem to understand how a 421-foot power alley in right-center helps left-handed hitters. Anyone else want to explain that one?

..Out of curiousity, has anyone even considered that a more extensive weight-training program and off-season workout regimens just might be helping these guys out a little bit?

I guess those THREE MVP (from his early years) awards dont count for much do they?

Another one sucking on the Haterade. Its one thing not to like a guy like Guru, but Bonds was assured a spot in Cooperstown before he hit 73 , so come on bro.

And I dont buy that juiced ball shit for a minute. Why cant baseball people accept evolution? Athletes are bigger stronger and healthier now. The old records will be broken. New ones will be written. Thats just progress. Baseballs biggest problem is that people refuse to accept change. ALL the old records will fall. Except maybe for the Dimaggio hitting streak record, THAT has to be the most difficult record in sports to chase. But soon, either Bonds Griffey or Rodriquez will hold the Home run crown. And Im sure Ichiro will probably be the guy to break .400. Its just a natural evolution of sports.Just like one day a guy will come along to break Gretzskys and Jordans records.

Keep in mind I don't like the guy... but... check out his numbers. Here's a link. Then come back and argue that he shouldn't be mentioned with the all time greats.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=3918

I mean, DAMN. He's had an OPS over 1.000 for the LAST 10 seasons. It's over 1.300 for the last two. I'm a recent convert to this stat, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a player with a 10 year run like that. Sosa has a sweet last 5 seasons going on, and Big Mac ran 6 years above 1.000 - but Bonds is doing it for his CAREER AVERAGE.

That says a lot. Hell, his .570 OBP this year is an amazing, jaw dropping stat all by itself.

The odds of Bonds getting on Base are better than choosing Red or Black on Roullette. And they have been for the last two seasons...

//edit: But I still don't like him.

If this is Bonds' 10th straight, then he'll join a pretty good crowd. Aaron only had 5 years total of it. Mays never came close because he never walked enough. Robinson wasn't close. Musial was close to 10 years of it, with 8 and a few in the .970+ range.

Gehrig had 10 years straight, probably could have had more barring his illness. But the two monsters of hitting, of course, are Ruth & Williams. Ignoring Williams' military stints interrupting him, he had FIFTEEN years straight of 1.000+. If he never has to go to war and stayed healthy (which is a pretty good bet, all things considered), he could have had TWENTY years in a row. Twenty. Ruth is just as good, when you consider he pitched for several years when he could have been hitting, and when you consider that he was killing the ball before anyone else. Minus one year where he was likely injured (only played 98 games), he had 15 years as well, and his two hitting years - where he played at least half the season as a hitter - when he didn't reach it were .966 and .936.

That Bonds is even close to this is impressive in and of itself, even if I'm still quite sure he shouldn't be mentioned as a candidate for greatest ever.

Actually, he already has 10. He's working on season #11 now. 2001-1992 = 9, but 1992 - 2001 = 10 seasons.

I make that mistake all the time. I was counting it as 9.

I didn't even pay attention to that when I was on Baseball Reference - I just tried to count the seasons and miscounted. So I'm not even mistaken, I'm just shitty with math.

No, baseball-reference.com doesn't include the current season, so you have an excuse. You couldn't have counted 2002 there if you wanted to.

No, seriously - I looked down in the Miscellaneous Batting stats, where OPS is, and I just miscounted the 10 as 9. Never considered the years, never looked on that side of the page at all. Dumb careless error, as my old calculus teacher would tell me.
