I live in Kentucky. When I watch ESPN I always notice the advertisements in the ballparks for Carl's Jr. (or Carl Jr.'s, I can't usually see the TV that perfectly). The logo catches my eye. The logo is identical to the logo that Hardee's uses in this area.
Is Carl's Jr. a west-coast Hardee's? Are they related? Sorry to post such a stupid question, but not knowing is starting to bother me.
I believe Carl's Jr. bought Hardee's. All of the Hardee's here in OK turned into Carl's Jr.s about 4-5 years ago. For a little while after that, they were advertising that they had "Hardee's Breakfast" on their menu, but I don't think they do that anymore.
They took over the Hardees restraunts in my part of IL about 5 years ago also, but then went back to being Hardees about a year ago. I'm kinda glad about it too. I ruined a couple shirts because of their sandwiches.

Thanks. That helps a lot. It seems sort of strange/cool that someone would buy a national chain (or at least quasi-national chain)and change the name of some stores, but not all stores. I wonder if the local franchise owners have the final say?
Same thing here. In Maryland that was a Hardees/Roy Rogers switcheroo for a couple of years with stores going back and forth depending on which day of the week it was. The one closes to me started as a Hardee's(old style, brown and orange logo and all), went to Roy's(still with aforementioned brown and orange), back to Hardee's(now with the blue and orange logo), back to Roy's(complete with multi-colored "Rustic" look), to being sold to McDonald's(when all Roy's in the Baltimore area were sold to Mickey D's for no freakin' reason) back to being a Hardee's(in the new Carl's Jr style with those goddamned smiley faces so annoying we called the joint "Prozacburger").
Having been born and raised on Hardees on the East Coast, and then transplanting to the West Coast, I can also say that Carl's seems to have better quality food than Hardees. I stopped in a Hardees a few months ago while visiting Baltimore, and the burgers were nowhere near as good as Carl's. Pretty dissapointing, actually.
Of course, no fast food burger can stand up to In-N-Out, but that's another matter entirely.

What in the hell kind of a name for a reastaurant is Carl's Jr. anyway? It doesn't make any sense!

By the way, it seems like there are only a selected few Roy Rogers restaurants that I know about.
There are some in northeast MD and then a bunch on the PA Turnpike. I used to wait with baited breath on my trips home from college in the midwest til we got close enough to have them for lunch. then, I'd eat there for a few days in a row, just enough to get sick of them when I went back to school.
You're all so WONDERFUL. Why did they ever have to remove you from the continuity? You'd have made for MARVELOUS stories. You WILL make marvelous stories. And the FIRST story of the new world will be a story of REVENGE! -- The Psycho Pirate, Animal Man 23, May 1990.
Roy Rogers rules all. I almost never actually sat down and ate there, but as a kid I would mark out just upon seeing their logo. A few months ago I saw a Roy Rogers joint in a dream.
Now that everybody knows I'm a complete freakin' weirdo, I'm gonna go hide.

There's one left in silver spring, md, where i understand he started them all. it's at the wheaton mall, unless it has closed down in the last year. the mall has gotten too dollar-store-riffic for my tastes...

CKE (Carl Karcher Enterprises) bought Hardee's in 1997 and started a conversion process. The original plan was to convert the entire chain to the Carl's Jr brand with Hardee's breakfast (the only thing doing business at Hardee's at the time). Two test markets...Peoria and Oklahoma City...were converted initially.
Oklahoma performed well, Peoria did not. That was because the Peoria region, like a lot of Hardee's, was really poorly run, and was allowed to continue to be poorly run. So CKE decided to roll out what they call the "Star Hardee's" format, basically the Carl's Jr burger lineup with the Hardee's non-burger stuff. And they've slowly been migrating the chain that way ever since. But Hardee's people are still in charge of Hardee's, so don't expect a very good experience.
Carl's is still a much better place to eat than Hardee's. I do NOT include restaurants converted from Hardee's to Carl's Jr in Oklahoma City and Colorado. They're still not all that well run (kind of hit and miss). Carl's comes off as much classier than Hardee's.
Generally I'm not in to fast food at all execpt for BK and McD's breakfast because it's fast and cheap. The "new" burgers at BK are horrid. I'm done eating at Carls Jr. Their food has gotten worse and worse. it's nothing now. little (if any ) lettuce and tomato and i wouldn't throw rocks at the green burrito shit. Wendy's is real down hill now too. In'n'Out is still allright but not the same anymore. Even the sandwich places like Subway,Quiznos, and Schlotzky's are all no good. I'm probably more critical than most people because I have been a cook for 16 years and know good food, but most mexican places seem too usually be at least decent. I have'nt eaten at an Arby's in years but used to like them.

Living in OKC, I've never eaten at an original Carl's Jr. However, I can safely say that Carl's Jr. is way better than Hardee's ever was. The only reason people ever ate at Hardee's around here was because they had cheap-ass fried chicken.
There's still a Roy Rogers in Frederick, MD, as well as in at least one of the rest stops in Maryland on I-95.
One of my favorite Usenet posts of all time was a response to someone who asked "What was the name of Roy Rogers's horse?" The reply was "Fixins Bar."

There's still plenty of Roy's in MD, mainly west of Baltimore in the such thriving metropolises as Finksburg, Westminster, Eldersburg, Mount Airy, etc.
