Did I mention that I thought I'd hate the living hell out of this remake, but that it's addictive? Ok, so the set, music and budget right now are straight out of the Netherlands...

But then again, the contestants are getting a trip to the Netherlands -- maybe Amsterdam? You could actually smoke pot before your appearance...;) Then again, you'd be spelling six-letter words.

If anyone needs the premise, feel free to ask.

I'd like a definition of what "Straight out of the Netherlands" means. If you mean it looks like they made it while high, that's ok. If it means something else then I'm just gonna sit here confused.

"Sales of penis-enlargement treatments and devices in 2000 totaled in excess of $600 million," Skolnick said. "Cock-lengthening is, no pun intended, a consistent growth industry in the U.S., and this bill would severely emasculate it. As usual, it's the little guy who suffers."

Errr...what's with the dutch obsession (on that show?)
Why is the set and all straight out of the Netherlands?
And what does that mean? Windmills & wooden shoes?
Lingo had a great run here the past decade, but gawd was the host annoying..

I remember getting a sydnicated version of Lingo back in 1989 and thinking it was the hottest shit ever. Then I never saw it again.

You know, maybe it was because I hadn't seen a lot of Canadian game shows in California, but it sure looked kinda low-budget to me back then. I can only imagine what it must look like today (since I don't get Game Show Network, whine, whine) to spark your comments.

I can't remember who the host was back then, but I *do* remember thinking he looked like one of my then computer science teacher. Actually, thinking harder I think he looked like Ron Insana after removing the toupee. Am I right?

There was a French-Canadian version of Lingo that aired on SRC over the past few summers. I had no idea what was going on, but I still found it strangely addictive. Cheap Canadian game shows rule. Definition. The Mad Dash. Headline Hunters. Love Handles. Pitfall. Test Pattern. Nothing beats winning two-slice toasters.

BTW, Lingo-philes, don't go to the site below if you ever want to get anything done ever again.

I think Lingo still comes on SRC. I think I saw it the other day when I was looking for something to watch, unless they're showing reruns, constantly. ANd then there's the wierd singing gameshow and some other wierd gameshow that I don't know what the premise is. Sometimes I wish I could understand spoken french.

And Test Pattern is the greatest gameshow EVAR~! Nothin' beats seeing a contestant strapped to a big wheel then spun around to find out what they win or something.

Well, you've got the "Ron" part in there indirectly. The host was Michael Reagan, his son (half-son?).

GSN's game is a tad different; it's more points-based than the syndie you mentioned.

The main point of the game is to guess five-letter words. You'll always start with the first letter. You receive five chances to answer, and they let you know MasterMind style what letters are correct and/or correct placement.

That's half of it -- get a word correct, and you pull for numbered balls inside the podium to finish a "LINGO" (Bingo) on your card. Miss a word, create a word that is either not a word or larger than six letters OR pull a red "Stopper" ball (yes, Chuck's still calling them "Stoppers"), and control goes to the other team.

In the '89 syndie version, you had to Lingo once to win the game, IIRC. You receive more points and get a new card in the GSN version.

Also, the end game is different. In the older version, you could win either up to $64K or $128K (hey, it's 13 years ago...) by getting words correct and *NOT* Lingo-ing. The idea was that you got a word correct, and pulled out two balls. If they were on the card, well, bad for you. If they weren't, and you got through the two cards, you doubled your money (which started out at $1K).

For the GSN version, your 2-Minute Drill begins with two letters in the first word. Each correct word is $100, and a Lingo ball. With those balls, you want to Lingo on the bonus card for about $4K in prizes.

Now, set/music wise -- if you're in the Netherlands, it's probably the same. It's pretty much a small set... ok by cable standards. Does it beat the WBSM or BtG set? Nah. However, if it's under a budget, it does well.

I only got to see a tape or two of Pitfall, but that f'n ruled. Alex Trebek in the early 80's, plus an end game with dropping platforms. Dare I say, SWANK~!?

GSN is trying to get to about 50% original shows sooner or later, and most of their batch right now isn't bad at all. It does make me hope that sooner or later they can reverse repurpose (read: Cable to network/syndication) some of their game shows.

It was a lot worse, believe me. Now, if they can get Kinniku Banzuke, I'll be in heaven.

I remember that now! I'm pretty sure you can't have a "half-son," by the way. ;-)

Pitfall was another big big fave of mine - ten elevators! Pit passes! Trebek's afro! Awesome! Also Canadian, and again I have no idea why I was able to watch it in California.

Syndication, grasshopper, syndication.

Pitfall, for all I know, could have been a 4am special in Chicago. That was the truth for the later remake of Break the Bank. As well, not all of the time is a show going to be cleared in every market. I don't think Pyramid has cleared here yet.

USA and CBN were both known for doing the rerun thing before GSN, true. Ah, those were the days...

Oh, and count me in as a dummy for saying "half-son." D-U-M-M-Y.

(sigh)

Life will not be complete until GSN gets the rights to Scrabble and brings back Bumper Stumpers. But the olive branch of PYL (and the remake) is appreciated.

GSN did buy the rights to Scrabble -- look to 2003 for that remake to happen.

You should, however, be hit with copious amounts of Lingo balls for ever wanting to bring back Bumper Stumpers. I hated that show.
