If there's one thing I just can't stand when I watch WWE programming is that every single theme song for a tribute video, tv show, or pay per view has to be some sort of rock or metal music. It seems that ever since they've moved to TNN, they've upped the amount of rock music, but then again, what do you expect? It is the redneck station after all.

Can't they have some rap themes or some original non rock music every once in a while? Are they afraid they'll tune out all the crackers that watch WWE programming? I think by doing this, they tune out all the African American's and other races in droves. Now Booker T's music, that's a breath of fresh air from all the rock music all you metalhead skateboarders with no ups listen to.

The WWE should really cater to people of all races and creeds, not just white people. Maybe if they had just one black executive, things would be different, but it's probaly just always just going to be a good ole boys club.

I agree there is more kinds of music than Rock that the WWE can play, but I have plenty of black friends who love Metallica, Dave Matthews Band, etc. Not just white people listen to rock, just like how not only black people listen to rap. Every white person I know listens to rap in some form.

I agree. I think Cena and Lesnar have pretty generic rock music but for some reason I really like Maven and Taker's music.

I thought your topic was going to have to do with Rock's music having him say, "If You Smell What the Rock is Cooking" at the beginning and how other wrestlers have also done that. I really hate how Flair and Booker had catchphrases added to, IMODO, the best music in the biz.

Well, as a white person myself, I enjoy some kinds of rap a lot. I have several African American friends who also enjoy rock music. I'm not sure that a choice in music would "drive out African Americans and other races in droves." (In *droves,* no less.) Having said that, yes, the WWE could stand to incorporate more music styles into their programming. I would not, however, attribute it to racism as much as I would attribute it to WWE's old habit of running things into the ground because they're too scared to try anything new.

Didn't Rey Mysterio debut (and still use) a hip-hop type theme? I really like his music, whatever it is - it suits him well.

I actually really like the "Can you dig it" added to Booker's music. I agree about Flair. I heard once (just hearsay, I can't attest it's true) that the reason they do it is that the small change allows them to re-copyright the "new" song as their own. Now, who would actually want to BUY "Thus Spake Zarathustra" with a "WOOOO!" at the beginning, I dunno. But I guess, from their perspective, why not do it.

Oh, umm, and yeah, I'm not that big on the samey-sounding nu metal as every PPV theme. I also think it's going out of fashion, which is what should really bother them about it.

Here are some noteable hip-hop themes:

WWF Agression: When this WWF-inspired Hip-Hop Compilation came out, a few wrestlers used the songs as entrance music. Some of this album was awesome, some of it sucked. The DX theme by Run-DMC rocked and replaced the old DX music until DX died for good (I hope). It had a rock edge, but was definitely hip-hop.

Shane and Stephanie McMahon: I LOVE Shane's "Here Comes the Money" featuring Naughty By Nature, and I'm really digging Stephanie McMahon's new theme (that sounds like Lil' Kim- is there official confirmation of that anywhere?)

Rey Mysterio: Hot hip-hop. He and the other Filthy Animals used hip-hop in WCW, too.

Booker T: Funky, old-school. It's not rap, but it has a hip-hop feel.

K-Kwick and Road Dogg: "Get Rowdy." Let's move on.

Non-conventional and non-rock themes that rock:

Christian: It's got a "Bohemian Rhapsody" feel and just works... I know it segues into rock, but the opening makes it.

Ric Flair: Nuff said.

Tajiri, Kaientai and Rikishi: Flavor from the East.

Chavo and Eddie: Latino Beat.

I think that rock music just makes people want to get up and, well, rock. Hip-hop is usually more laid back. I'm almost strictly a hip-hop fan, but I don't think the WWE needs much more hip-hop than it has.

For some wrestling inspired Hip-Hop check out my "posse" at The Council of Doom. Shameless plug, yes, but to hear Booker T's theme interpolated for hip-hop, click on "You Get F." If you like what you hear, check out the rest of the album and look for wrestling related rhymes.

Yes, yes it does. It detracts from the song by sprucing it up with sports entertainment when it doesn't need it!!!

That's my story and I'm stickin to it as I don't want to get any more anal over music for a wrestler.

I'd also like a bit more variety in the music that's played. I'm a big techno/electronic fan. I think it would be cool to hear a bit of that (good ones not badly done ones)

Also would it kill them to put some female vocals on some of the PPV/wrestlers music. Torrie Wilson is the only one who has female vocals. I remember Heat a long time ago when they had plays of the week with a music playing in the backgroud (I actually liked that idea) they played Kittie's spit. And I thought wow what an amazing song for wrestling. That's the only time I heard it on WWF TV.

it sounds like a lot of their theme songs are done in-house.
So judging by that- I don't want them to do any hip-hop. A lot of their tunes are plain forgetable, I'd hate to see their half-ass attempt at creating a hip-hop song.
I don't know how much it would cost- but I'd like the wrestlers to have real-life theme songs. Can it cost that much? Hell, they had real theme songs in ECW.

I love hip-hop.
I don't want them to try to create some hip-hop theme song for someone and have it come out sounding as corny as a Jack in the Box commercial.

Plus, do the wrestlers have any say in what type of music they get? Maybe the boys want that rock music??

Not to mention, as much as it gets old after a while, rock music sells incredibly well to the market the WWE is looking at. Plus a lot of times it really fits the wrestler well who has it. I don't think any man can say that the music the Rock has doesn't fit him.

Third, I do recall some rap music being used for intros:

Insane Clown Posse did the intro music for the Oddities. Haha. Wow. (Sorry, I barely consider ICP to be human beings, let alone artists)

Lastly, I resent being called a "metalhead skateboarder" because I listen to rock music and heavy metal. Is all rock music evil? I would think you need your head examined if you think that is true.

I remember Rick Steamboat used a well-known Alan Parsons Project sample for his entrance. Not metal, and way cool.

The Midnight Express, we all know what their music was.

Oh, and the old Samoan Swat Team used the theme from the Halloween movies (or was it Friday 13th?). Again, not rock or metal, but something different, and way cool.

so, yeah, a little creativity by the boys in Stamford would be appreciated...

Re: 'several African-American friends.' Guys, it may have been thirty-five years now since that approach produced anything but eye-rolling cringes among readers/listeners. You've got knowledge or credibility or you don't, and you can't acquire same by coming up a list of, 'who has the most friends of another race.' Either your friendships and other social contacts have brought about understanding, or they haven't. Either way, it'll be evident in what you say/write, not by means of, "I've got five!" "Well, screw you, man, I hardly even know any people of my own race-- I've got dozens!"

I know you meant well, but it adds nothing and it'll cause some to tune out post haste.

I have tons of black friends and none of them really care about the music people or the PPV promos use.

And a lot of them don't view it as bad that there isn't a lot of rap music on WWE shows. When they watch Raw and Smackdown, they watch for wrestling not for music.

This was the most IGNORANT post I have ever seen on this forum. Not to mention that a) people who enjoy true rock hate the utter drizzling shite the WWF tries to parade as "rocking", b) 99.999999999999% of people don't know what actual rap is, and instead listen to repetitive thumping psuedo-poems about nailing bitches and rolling in money.

If you watch wrestling for the music, you are probably going to be disappointed.

Also, as far as any non WWE-produced, non WWE-label music, they will probably play any style music you like, for the right price. All those so-called official PPV theme songs are paid advertisements, right?

I am aware of that, humanmeal. I think this is a different context. I was trying to counter the idea that he was arguing that rock music "turns away African Americans and other races" in droves. I was merely trying to point out that that has not been my experience, not that having "several" African American friends somehow lends me more credibility than someone who only has "one or two." I wasn't playing a numbers game, but I appreciate the concern. Maybe I wasn't clear enough - I'll try to be so in the future.

Not a huge rap fan or anything, but I have to agree with the music sounding too generic. It's all the same. Everybody has the instrumental hard rock song. WWF had something with the Aggression album. That had some pretty cool shit on it that never was used. The No Chance remix was pretty sweet. I know they used some of them, but it could have been promoted better. They should probably come out with another rap album considering a lot of those guys are really big fans. I remember hearing stuff back in college in regular rap songs like: "Breakin backs like Bob Backlund" and "WWFn like Shawn Mic." These guys are fans, so their songs can connect better with the wrestlers the themes are used for.

BTW: Too many rock songs, but WWE should have used the Jericho/Sevendust theme from their last album.
