Ok, some of you may have seen this post and thought, "is this fool really that dumb? There is no doubt it will be Curt Schilling"

And true, Curt Schilling is having a remarkable year.

But (and this is hard for me to say cause i'm a diehard Mets fan) what about John Smoltz. I mean the guy has been incredible this year.

Schilling could get to 30 wins and that's pretty amazing, and hasn't been done in quite some time, but it's not the record.

Smoltz on the other hand could break the saves record. What if he does? Is he the Cy Young? And is there anyway he beats Schilling for the Cy Young even if he doesn't break the record?

Curt wins over 25 = auto Cy Young.

Also, At this point in the season he has 219 Ks and 18 walks, a 12.16 Strikeout to walk ratio. Only Dennis Eckersley has come close to that kind of control.

Smoltz may get some votes because the Braves bullpen was so bad for at least five years.

Maddux. Mind you I'm biased.

If he doesn't win it I can live with Schilling winning it too.

I'd be surprised if Smoltz wins it. He's got something of a high ERA for a closer, and it may even be higher than Schilling's. I also think Schilling's control numbers are far too good to ignore. Right now, no pitcher in either league is touching him.

Yeah, his ERA is 3.90, and even though a big part of that is one very bad outing, I can't see a reliever winning it with an ERA well over 3. Perhaps more to the point, Bobby Thigpen didn't win it when he set the save record with 57.

The other races are really interesting. I don't think any of them are set in stone yet. Many of them are totally up in the air.

AL MVP: An Ichiro/Jason Giambi race again? Or maybe Alfonso Soriano, who has been unbelievable, plus I think there's an advantage for people who have not been awarded yet. Or maybe Nomar, or Torii Hunter (ok, probably not Torii Hunter, but he is playing at that level.) Tough to call.
AL Cy: Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, and Barry Zito are all neck and neck. Jarrod Washburn and Roy Halladay are like 1% behind.
NL MVP: Barry Bonds? Lance Berkman? Albert Pujols? Luis Gonzalez? Jim Edmonds? Jeff Kent? Mike Piazza? Search me! I have less than zero idea.
AL Rookie: I guess Rodrigo Lopez at this rate, but teammate Jorge Julio and Eric Hinske are also doing very well.
NL Rookie: Hmm, I think there are other candidates besides Kazuhiro Ishii, but I forget who they are. Ishii's up to a 3.87 ERA, so there must be other candidates...

I still say A-Rod is the AL MVP. It doesn't matter to me that he is on an awful team. He is first in RBI, first in HR, first in runs, seventh in batting average and hits. And he does it with no help other than Palmeiro.

National League on the other hand. Schilling could win it too I guess. He sticks out more than anybody else in my mind.

But despite all those stats, it all really comes down to how much they want the V to mean. True, A-Rod has great numbers, but the Rangers are last with him, and could be last without him.

I agree with Quezzy, actually -- I think A-Rod and Bonds are no-brainers -- but in reality, A-Rod has no chance to win and Bonds probably has no better chance than a bunch of other guys.

Eh. Schilling... no brainer..... i mean... i dont think a closer will be able to win it over a guy with his control and coming close if not over 25 wins.

If Hoffman couldn't get the Cy Young in 98 with 53/54 saves converted, and taking his team into the promised land of the World Series, then a closer can't win that award.

This qualifies him for Most OUTSTANDING Player if there were such an award. But as some have said, the Rangers would still be in last with him. Actually, one could argue they could get two or three decent to great players for the cash they're paying him right now, and could maybe do better.

In the NL, for the player most VALUABLE to the team, look up. As in look north. I may be biased due to being a well known Expos fan, but I'm sure I can still come up with a VERY convincing arguement that Vladie G should be the NL MVP.

NL Cy Young-Gotta be Schilling. I could see the argument for Smoltz, but I'd NEVER give it to a closer (unless he's got a 0.00 ERA I guess) because it all depends on what situation your team puts you in. I wouldn't even say Smoltz is the best closer in the league, he just is put in the situation the most. Schilling is dominant, he'd be just as dominant on any team not named after mountains.

AL Cy Young-I'd give it to Zito or Washburn, but that's probably just cause they're both on my fantasy team.

NL MVP-Vladimir Guerrero might be the best player in the NL, but unless the Expos make a run, he's not winning it. I'd give it to Barry Bonds, Berkman should rack up some votes, and I'd give some serious consideration to Adam Dunn. The guy's got really good power numbers, he's near .300, he draws walks like a lead-off guy, and he was without Junior Griffey most of the year. I think Bonds wins it.

AL MVP-Alex Rodriguez is the best player, but he's not that valuable in his current environment. The Rangers suck with or without him. Soriano's really, really good, but the Yanks would still be very good without him. I'd give it to Nomar.

NL Rookie of the Year-Austin Kearns. Ishii's sliding, I can't think of anyone else.

AL Rookie of the Year-Hell, I don't know. Kevin Mench? That guy's having a pretty good year.

Managers of the Year! Give the managers some love:

AL-Mike Scioscia. Hands down...well, I guess the Sox manager could get some run.

NL-Bob Boone or Bobby Cox. Kinda depends on how the Reds finish. If the Expos or Marlins climb back in it (and they're both still well within reach of the Wild Card), I guess Frank Robinson or Jeff Torberg could get some votes.

What about Tony LaRusa? To keep the Cardinals in first for most of the season (to this point) after the year the team has had is awesome.

Expos: One could argue that it's a big deal they're even still in the hunt, what with the uncertainty surrounding them all.

Cardinals: Bang on Bucs, LaRusa has been doing a great job, especially considering the trauma the Cards have gone through this year.

Dodgers: They've been rock'n, something to keep in mind.

NL Cy: Schill, because he is so classic.

I think AL Cy is more interesting, so there are no super candidates. Lowe? Pedro? A Yankee? A Twin? Zito?

AL MVP: Hunter, Ichiro, Soriano.

NL MVP: Bonds? What about Schilling? You could even argue that Smoltz is more VALUABLE than Schill.

AL Manager: Gardenhire.

NL Manager: I don't like him, but if the Cardinals win the division after losing Kile, that's a great job by La Russa.

For the National League.. I'd have to give it to Schilling. His numbers are outstanding... and since I'm a Zito mark I'd have to give it to him on the American League side of things.

No you have to give it to Pedro this year. At least if he pitches like he has been for the last 2 months for the rest of the season.

To me MVP is what player has helped his team win the most games. Sure the Rangers are last but A-Rod has practically won all those games. If you take Giambi off the Yankees they still win, if you take Ichiro off the Mariners they still win. Torii Hunter on the other hand might be as valuable on a good team, but other than him I wouldn't put anyone over A-Rod.

I don't disagree with Vlad Guerrero as NL MVP either, but it's the same thing, the Expos aren't exactly good so why is Vlad allowed to be NL MVP but A-Rod isn't?

As for the Cy Young debate that started this whole thing, what if Schilling wins 30 games and John Smoltz saves 60. That means Schilling had a part in the Diamondbacks winning 30 games. But John Smoltz has a hand in the Braves winning 60. Now call me crazy but wouldn't you want someone who has helped you win 60 games rather than 30?

Vlad is allowed because without him the Expos would have SLIM hope for a wildcard berth. They'd be floating down near the cellar. Unlike the Rangers, who without A-Rod would probably improve what with being able to spend more money etc, etc.

If I was starting a team today and had pick between a pitcher who won 30 games or a closer that saved 60 games I would go for the starter ever single time. I dont think you will fine many people who would go for the closer.
