Just wondering how many other comic book geeks we've got posting around here.

Specifically, I'm curious if anyone has read Garth Ennis' Fury series, and whether it's worth spending money on. What about Lucifer? I've heard very polarized opinions on both of these books- it seems like they're both "love-it-or-hate-it" kinds of things. Opinions?

Yeah, that's right. My opinion doesn't matter. So what if I work in the industry. SO what if I have a cool 1970s piece of original art as my picture. I obviously don't know anything.

Fury is an over-the-top piece of poo. It's classic Garth Ennis, which to some is a positive. Lots of gratuitous swearing, explicit situations and deviating for long-standing characters' personalities.

Save up your money and buy the Sternako Strange Tales TPB for some great Nick Fury stories.

Well really the only questions in the original post were "What About Lucifer?" and "Opinions?" so i guess those were the questions he was answering, but i can see how you would be confused because I thought he was saying there was no comic fans here too. But anyway...

I don't know of the specific comics you asked about. But I am a comic fan. I currently enjoy Deadpool, Daredevil, Elektra, and Green Lantern.

I'm personally a big fan of Ennis. He is over the top, but I also think that he is deceptively thoughtful and intelligent. Preacher was full of gratuitous violence, but it also had the best characterization and dialogue that I've seen since Alan Moore, and it was a very thought-provoking story underneath the veneer of grievous headwounds and whatnot. As for Ennis deviating from traditional character's personalities, the only classic characters I'm aware of him working on were John Constantine and the Punisher. Personally, I think his Hellblazer stories were the definitive version of the character. He gave Constantine a much more human, identifiable feel, and I don't think he deviated from Moore and Delano's John at all- he just added to the character's personality, and I think he made him much more interesting. IMHO, Azzarello is the one who totally deviated from John's personality, making him into nothing more than a cipher with a smirk and a bad attitude. As for the Punisher, I don't think he messed with Frank Castle at all, either. He just brought the character back to basics from the atrocities that had been visited on him in recent years. I enjoyed Ennis' Punisher run- it wasn't thoughtful or deep, just a lot of fun in the vein of a really good, humorous action movie.

Since I haven't seen Fury, I definitely don't doubt your opinion on it- Nick Fury doesn't seem that suited to Ennis, really, and I've heard bad things. That's why I asked. On anothere Ennis-related note, I heard was going to do a book on the 101st Airborne division, which gets me super excited. Ihad some really good buddies in the Screaming Eagles, and I'd love to see Ennis' take on them. I imagine it will deal with the 101st during WWII, because Ennis seems to have an attachment to that period. Is this true?

And, Psycho Pirate, I'd love to hear what you do in the industry- working for a comic company has always been my dream job.

Finally- is there a new Elektra series, Quezzy? I thought she was dead? If so, who writes it?

Elektra lives because she was brought back agaisnt Miller's wishes. I'm going to say Bendis write Elektra because he seems to write everything Marvel does now.

Also, I am also a fan, but limited. I dabble (which means I get all I can and don't collect every issue of any one series, but follow many closely). I would say I'm a fan of Batman ('Tec and Batman only, also Dark Knight when they come out), Daredevil, Spiderman (early Ultimates and pre-clone Spectacular and Amazing), anything by Jim Lee, Too Much Coffe Man, and Frank Miller.

I tried to get into Grendel recently, but I think I started off in the wrong place, so if anyone's got any info on TPB's to start with drop me a line.

Actually, Bendis DOES write Elektra.

Count me as another comic geek. Though I've deviated into manga-exclusive territory for the most part, recently I picked up "The Essential Howard the Duck" and am enjoying the hell out of it.

There was a book called "Grendel Primer," although I don't know if it's still in print.

For sort of a good introduction to the character, look for the "Batman/Grendel" crossover that Wagner did a few years ago.

My advise: start with the Hunter Rose Grendel stories, as they are the best ones Wagner did.

Kinda and no.

I have a huge collection back at my mothers' house, but really haven't bought any since i graduated high school. Which was about the time Marvel's stock went down (coincidence? i think not).

I did like to collect, hoping they'd be worth money, but I got sick of all the collectors-edition bull pushed instead of strong/readable stories.

I've been a comics fan since about the time I learned to read, and I'm still hanging in there despite straitened financial circumstances.

As for my tastes, I'll read anything that I find interesting. I try to keep a balanced diet of superheroes (Flash, X-Men, Avengers, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Justice Society, etc.) and non-superheroes (Akiko, Stray Bullets, Thieves and Kings, Ranma 1/2, Bone, etc.).

Absolutely.

FURY did nothing for me in the first issue, so that's all I read. LUCIFER is one of the best books being published today, and is really close to surpassing SANDMAN in quality, if it hasn't already. I'd recommend to avoid the first TPB, as it includes the weak mini and the not-so-strong opening arc from the regular book. Things really clicked with the second arc (also the second TPB), and it hasn't slowed down since. Eventually, there are plotlines that come into play from the first arc, but nothing you can't figure out.

Just got back from the SDCC, where the wife snagged a SWEET piece of LUCIFER art from Peter Gross.

I quit collecting about then, too, but picked it back up around 99-00, and found that a lot of good stuff came out besides the crap that filled most of the shelves. I'm sure that somebody here could recommend some good shit depending on what kind of comics you like to read, if you're thinking about getting back into reading comics.

Smoovy- thanks for the Lucifer info, I'll pick up the TPBs next paycheck.

I still have a huge comic collection. I stopped collecting in the mid-90s, during the "shiny cover, gatefold sleeve, silver ink" days, quitting in disgust. I still read when I can, but am unimpressed with today's comic books. I still a die hard Legion fan though, no matter what! Favourite comic? The first run of Suicide Squad with Ostrander/McDonnell/Kesel. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
