In Foley’s book “Have a Nice Day”, he mentioned the 97/98 return of Terry Funk to the WWF, the “new era of danger and promos” and the sad fact that it didn’t really work due to Funk’s request to be “Chainsaw Charlie”, stocking and all.

Has anyone read or heard why Funk chose to be Chainsaw Charlie in lieu of himself?

Don't know, but eventually Funk just wreslted as himself, including I think their WM match with the Outlaws.

You're all so WONDERFUL. Why did they ever have to remove you from the continuity? You'd have made for MARVELOUS stories. You WILL make marvelous stories. And the FIRST story of the new world will be a story of REVENGE! -- The Psycho Pirate, Animal Man 23, May 1990.

It actually suprises me a great deal that the "Chainsaw Charlie" gimmick was Terry Funk's idea, considering how well it fit in with the "play up the smarts" attitude they had going on at the time. I always felt it was meant to poke fun at how McMahon used to sign former big names from the NWA/WCW and give them completely ludacris gimmicks.

I mean, never once was Chainsaw Charlie ever portrayed as anyone but Terry Funk - Jim Ross even used to wonder on air why Terry Funk would want to saddle himself with such a stupid gimmick.

I have never heard why he chose to be Chainsaw Charlie. But I do remember one of the funniest interviews of all time involving Chainsaw Charlie and Mankind prior to their involvement in the Royal Rumble in either 98 or 99. (Can't remember). But it was prior to them entering in as one and two (if memory serves me right) and Funk was just going on and on describing him and Foley as two of the toughest people in wrestling. I wish that I had a transcript because it was hysterical to the point that Foley started cracking up and said "Come on Terry, let's go!". To which Funk said, "I'm not Terry, I'm Chainsaw Charle". It was priceless, and I don't know if it ever made it's way to the Royal Rumble videotape.

After listening to all that has been said... I still prefer the sound of my own voice.

I seem to recall them noting in ECW that Sandman was left-handed as well. During a Sandman-Raven ECW title match in 96 (I think), Stevie Richards noted it on commentary when Raven was working over Sandman's left arm.
