Who fucking cares?! Just put them in tons of matches against each other and give them time to have great matches like they did tonight!

i thought it was a really good match last night and it made me hope for a nice feud between the two, but i don't see how it was a four star match. i guess different tastes and all could make is plausible for others to think about giving it four stars, but the crowd was dead for half the match and it was pretty slow and plodding during some points. i duno, i just thought it could have been so much more.

but hey, here's to more (better) matches between rvd - benoit! throw them together at house shows to work out the kinks and see what sticks. yeah...

Scott Keith did give it a deserving 4 stars.... I can't wait too see what these two can do at Summerslam.

I have to agree with InsideSolution.

The match was good, but there were a few very awkward looking moments. It certainly did not WOW me the way I thought it would.

If they keep them working together, though, I think these two could really pull off a classic.

I'll say.

If Benoit and RVD were women (...um .... Trish and Jackie, for example), we'd probably have another one of those "Who-Should-Be-Punished?" threads.

PS -- Benoit seemed genuinely pissed that RVD's late elbow had The Crippler bleeding from the mouth. Think his turning into the 5-Star (almost cracking Van Dam's sternum in the process) was a little payback?

I disagree about the above statement about the women. The match wasn't THAT awful. In fact, it wasn't awful at all. Just, merely, decent.

But, this WAS their first meeting, correct? It looked a little sloppy at parts. Period. I don't think this match was 4 stars at all. No do I think this was even the best match on the show.

I also noticed that I'm starting to hate Benoit because too many people put him over. He hasn't done a damn thing THAT memorable yet and people are already collecting sweat drops from his jock strap. Pardon the last sentence, but GOOD GOD this guy has gotten put over too much lately. At times, YES, he is the best wrestler in the world. But don't give someone TOO much credit. I don't base my opinions on what others say, most of the time, but when you can't go one day without hearing "Man, can you just imagine if Benoit faced THIS guy? Bet it'd be five stars." All the time it gets old. In fact, when he makes a mistke now I almost chuckle and tally it up in my head. It's sady really. I've seen the match twice. It's decent at best.

Sorry about the rant, just had to get it off my chest. Feel free to disagree, because Booker, Scott Hall and Kurt Angle can do no wrong in my eyes, either. Even when they have subpar (or in Hall's case, crappy) outings, I can't help but put THEM over.

EDIT: That and one more thing, upon further review of my tape. Benoit isn't over at all. Personally, I want to see more RVD/Benoit. I'd like to see them get more in-ring time at houseshows and see a payoff on pay per view. I still like the guy, just can't STAND to see props being given for mediocrity.

Huh? I thought that was a really great match. Am I missing something? Scott Keith liked it -- I checked!

I do see a rematch happening at SummerSlam, but it really wouldn't matter who won as the IC Championship will probably move to SD! shortly after.

Yeah, well my name isn't Scott Keith and I didn't think it was a "great" match. A "great" match has to be something extraordinary. Above par, as it were. To be honest with you, I would put that match in the same category as the Regal/Jeff match for the Euro belt. Nothing special, but nothing bad. Mediocre. I like RVD, I liked Benoit, I'm not going to put the match over just because they're in it. Also, you could kind of tell this was one of the first times they've faced each other. It was a bit slow and sloppy early on.

For the record, I'm a bit of a Benoit detractor myself, but I still really liked the match.

Put me down with those that thought the match was incredible. The parts that pushed it over the edge from good to great, for me were: RVD using his flexibility to counter Benoit's grappling skills in the opening sequence; RVD's leap (plancha?) over the top rope; RVD's body-scissor pin; Benoit's hammer-lock bridge suplex; The sequence where RVD gives Benoit two vicious kicks, and when he goes for it the third time, Benoit gives him a vicious leg-lock takedown; the frogsplash that landed on Benoit's hip. Someone theorized that Benoit was mad at RVD for messing something up, so they started working stiff. To me, it looked more like a case of two wrestlers that like working stiff saying to each other, "let's really beat the hell out of each other". I enjoyed it immensely and definitely consider it a MOTYC.

I think there is fabulous potential for these two to have what I would term a great match. In fact I think they could have a MOTY candidate type match.

They have to work together a little. Their styles are so different.

I can see RVD's style being hard to adapt to, especially since there is no one else like him that Benoit may have wrestled before.

Like I said earlier, it was a good match last night, I did enjoy it, but it did not blow me away. And there were spots that looked awkward.

Looking back at the match, whats sad is that when Benoit has the armbar on and is using the ropes for leverage the crowd is quiet. RAW was in Flair country... they should have eaten that "homage" to Flair up!

My, my... isn't that a brilliant reason to hate someone? You hate him because a lot of other support him? That doesn't make a lot of sense. I can't stand when people hate something or someone (wrestler, movie, band, etc) just because it is popular. Hey, hate Benoit all you want, it's your perogative, it just seems like a waste of energy to me.

As for not doing anything memorable yet, what is the context? I assume not his career, or even his WWE tenure. If your point is that he hasn't had an incredible match since returning from neck surgery, then yes, I would agree with that.

As an aside: Is Benoit going to use the top rope headbutt anymore? I know he should be cautious about using the move that lead to his injury and he should learn a lesson from the wrestler that he modeled his career after (Dynamite), but he took some bumps right on his neck in his first couple of matches with Buh-Buh Ray. Just a thought.

I don't literally hate the guy. But, it seems to me like people would put him over if he shit in the ring. I don't like him because he's "popular." Flair's popular. I don't hate him. Hogan's popular. I don't hate him. It's unjustified praise. It gets old hearing how great his matches are, or hearing every single time how he isn't pushed enough, or he shouldn't have jobbed to this person, just because the person is a mark for him.

Like I said, I've been known to do the same things with Booker and Angle. I don't hate the guy, but he's not a god.

And I meant he hasn't done anything that memorable since he's come back from the neck injury.

I guess that's reasonable. It makes a little better sense to me anyway. I suppose it is as reasonable for me liking Benoit that much more, because I was a huge Dynamite Kid fan. Different strokes for different folks. I could see how it could get annoying. Luckily my vision is clouded on that subject.

I have a theory as to why there is tremendous internet community support for Benoit. It goes like this:

Benoit consistently works matches where he looks great and his opponent looks great. Benoit is not a master of the microphone but he is a master of making his moves look very stiff. He is an adequate seller of other people's moves. In this aspect of his wrestling, he is very much limited in the way that he sells by the move that he is taking, and from whom. By and large, he could make me look good in a wrestling match.

That's why we love him.

Yeah, but how does he get you guys to put him over at the drop of a hat? Is there some Benoit Check you guys get?

Seriously, though, I like the guy. Have a couple of tapes with his matches in Japan and ECW on them. I just don't understand the obsessive internet fanbase that puts over every single thing. I mean a four star match? The match was decent. Not great, not bad, but decent. I can't belive anyone would honestly think of that as match of the year. That's all I got, for now.

Having a bad day Deion?
For the record I agree with you, I thirnk Benoit gets more credit for his matches (which are usually good) then when other people have good matches and that leads me, on some level, to not mark for him (no I can't explain why exactly) but I think we're fighting a losing battle.
Bring on the feud though it does hold the potential to not only put on good matches but get them both more over.

If they are going to make the draft a focal point of Raw, the best thing to do would be to have a scroll bar on the bottom like they do with yearly sports drafts. Have the show go normally with all the wrestlers not yet selected seem dejected.
