The reason they say we're so low is because we don't "adequately provide for public health care." The only reason this list exists is because the old determination used to just be on standard of living for economic reason. Than they added the socilaistic stuff to keep us down.

Someone in the UN must like being FROZEN TO DEATH! I prefer the warmth of southern California. I am just waiting for communist dictator Gray Davis to be overthrown and our constitutional rights restored. If we could just get rid of Boxer and Feinstein all will be right in our world.

I'll trade you three Communists in California for a couple of authoritarians in Washington. I'll even throw in Fritz Hollings and Joe Lieberman if I can get rid of two more conservatives -- oh, wait, they are. Never mind.

I'd challenge that statement. Ask a Canadian. Lots of them come across the borders to pay for treatment because they acknoweldge that their health care may be free, but that in actuality their treatment sucks.

i challenge your statement, because i can't afford health care...

Free beats Zero any day

and i've been a motorcyclist for 4 years with zero health care

so, who's got the better deal? the canadian with Free care, or the American who has NO care?

I'll buy that argument. But our system is still better. A market economy on health care will always trump a command economy(trust me, I am NO fan of American health care providers)

Actually the complaint is more about the waiting you need for major surgeries and such in Canada, not the quality of the care. By the Canadian system, everybody has to get in line for any kind of health care, no matter how high up the economic scale you are. So if you're a rich Canadian you can just hop the border and buy health care in America, because the poor people aren't clogging the lines.

Even if their health care system is better which is definetly up for debate it is hellishly more expensive. In Oregon there is going to be a ballot measure for health care for the state. First it won't pass. Second it's illegal anyway. But for me at least I will pay $100 a month for more limited health insurance. What a deal now I can help pay for people who don't bother to get insurance.
Canadians pay something like 10% for that "free" health care. So yeah poor people come out ahead, working class lose a little, and rich get hosed. People need to take some responsibility for their own decisions. Plus govts are always so efficient and there is never any graft to pay for things like alien research and killing Castro.

I will disagree with part of that. The rich will be able to afford it not matter what(unless the extreme case of a 100 percent tax bracket). The poor people get more of a free ride than they do now. And the middle classes, the backbone of our economy as both producers and consumers, gets shafted because the quality of their care will decrease as their income levels decrease as their taxes get jacked up to pay for this insanity.

I currently pay $71/month for bare bones (i.e., I wonīt go bankrupt if I break my leg) health care. Add to that the cost I pay in taxes for Medicare/Medicade, which is 1.45%. That means if I make $855/month, which is $10,260/year, Iīm paying 10% of my income in health care costs for the absolute minimum standard of health care. 10,260 is an hourly wage of slightly less than $5.00/hour, 40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. Please note, this does not include my $1000 dollar/year deductable, any medications I have to buy, or (non-existant for me) family members I might need insurance for. If you take these things into consideration (family of four needing coverage, better coverage, co-payments, etc.) Iīd probably have to make about $50,000/year - which ceratinly is withing the realm of regular middle-class family - to get the health care costs down to 10% of gross income. So I donīt understand why Canadians are getting a bad deal when they pay 10% (if it is that, Iīd apprecitate a link) of their income for health insurance.

because the quality of their care will decrease as their income levels decrease

Youīve got to be kidding me. You donīt think the quality of Health Care decreases with income under our present (or any) free market system? Or did you mean the quality of their health care would decrease as their income levels increase? While the quality might stay the same, how would it decrease?

The point I was trying to make was that state run health care is of a much lower quality than free-market health care. Simultaneously, families would have less gross income because of the higher taxes that would be necessitated by the aforementioned state run health care. So people are both sicker and poorer at the same time, basically.

I happen to be a Canadian citizen (lived there my first 24 yrs) who has been living in the USA (NYC, specifically) for the bulk of the last 5 yrs.

While I can't speak for everyone, I can definitely speak from my own experience.

Canadian healthcare is NOT more expensive than American. Medical insurance is made affordable mainly through economies of scale. If you are comparing services apples to apples, the larger group covered will be the less expensive. With 100% of the populace covered under the same plan, you are at the biggest group possible. Granted, with no competition there are some inefficiencies, but those also exist within the American model.

As Jag said above, the biggest issue in Canada is wait time.
I'm not trying to minimize this factor, as I have family members that have been impacted by it, but it is a huge boon to society to have everyone covered for basic, necessary medical service, and that is really all the government health plans cover. Elective things are covered by supplementary private coverage or paid out of pocket in Canada.

As for the 10% figure cited above, I am 98% positive that it's a spurious figure. I have seen plenty of articles, columns, etc. in the American media that misrepresent the way that the Canadian healthcare system works. Sometimes it's shoddy research, sometimes it's deliberate misrepresentation, but there is a lot of incorrect info out there.

Oh, yeah - I meant to add that my healthcare here in the USA, which I pay for, is probably slightly subpar to what I've recieved in Canada, but much, much quicker.

To any Canadians out there what is the percentage of the the countries income that goes to healthcare? Or what it costs in total dollars? I posted the 10% earlier because that is what I heard. It could easily be wrong but I doubt it is much lower.
But to be honest I as a middle income tax payer pay a similar amount. I pay $240 a month for good health and dental coverage for 4 people. That makes up about 8% of my gross income. But also the money I pay to insurance does not count as income as far as taxes go. But if you throw in what I pay in taxes to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, BIA, and VA I would call it close to 2% more. So as far as I am concerned the numbers are equal.
But unfortunately my wife works too. So if we both paid 5% (I make more than her) we would lose money. I am willing to pay more so that any young people or kids can have insurance. As long as the problems are worked out before the program goes into effect.
#1 What is covered? I am sorry but things like cosmetic surgery is very questionable. There is some cases where I could agree with it but 90% should not be paid by tax payers.
Do people with chronic drug and alchol problems still get full coverage or is there a top out limit?
#2 What rights are people giving the govt? As long as the govt. is doing something for us (they are not really) they have the option of telling us what to do. People need to quit smoking, drinking, drugs, sex, eating bad food, must excercise, etc.
#3 Is it really for the best? Too many people already think they need a handout for Uncle Sam. This will make it worse. It took 30 years to finally start to work out the problems the welfare system had.

There is a huge difference between health care and welfare. Welfare is a constant entitement designed originally to help war-widows raise there children, but evolved into a system that discoraged work, encoraged having more kids, and limited upward mobility. Universal Health Care does none of these things, and greatly helps the upward mobility of families by making sure they wonīt have to sacrifice their kids college funds for momīs operation. In addition, the upside to having a healthier populace is enormous.

As for quality, I think itīs generally established that the top levels of health care in the U.S. is better than in Canada and the base level of health care is better in Canada. We could probably argue about whoīs standard of health care is better for the average person forever, because different peopleīs concept of 'the average person' tend to be very different.
