I was watching the New Year's Eve top ten matches of 2001 show earlier today and realized that this has been a stink year for top shelf matches IMHO. Last year's crop included HHH/Austin best 2 of 3, Jericho/Benoit ladder match, Austin/Rock Wrestlemania main event, Angle/Shane bloody mess at Summerslam, Austin/HHH/Benoit/Jericho, RVD/Hardy from Invasion (as well as the rematch at Summerslam), Angle/Benoit cage match, Austin/Benoit from Smackdown, TLC 2, and a bunch of others that I just can't remember right now (fell free to add).
This year, I can't think of ANY matches that have blown me away. I haven't gotten as many PPVs and didn't see last week's triple threat- was it worthy of JR and Cole's hype? Edge and Jericho put on a good show last night, but they didn't tell the story those listed above did IMO. Angle and Edge's PPV match and RVD and Eddy's ladder match from Canada seem to me to be my choices at this point, with lots of consideration to Rock/Hogan for drama without much skillful wrestling.
Have I missed or forgotten a bunch of top notch matches from this year?
Sadly, there hasn't been much incredible stuff. Right now I think the match of the year candiates are: Rock vs Jericho at Royal Rumble for marks, Rock vs Hogan at WM18 both Edge vs Angle PPVs, and mabye their cage match Every Eddy and RVD match except their last one (the one on the Atlanta Raw, which still was awesome only a little short) The three way from Vengence. Possibly the Rumble?

I think HHH/Jericho in the cell was good, but the ref really did take the biggest bump, and if you think about it, a pedigree on a cage really shouldn't hurt. It still was good though, but I don't think it was a MOTY.

Why did you add "for marks"? Just because you are a smark doesn't mean you have to like all that technical wrestling crap. There are a lot of "smarks" that loved that match. It told an amazing story. I'm betting there are a lot more people besides the "marks" who thought that was a great match.
Jericho had a bunch of great matches during his title run in January and February, and RVD & Guerrero had about 4 really good matches. Plus, Angle/Austin from RAW in January rocked. Other than that, though, everything's sort of been middling...
But HELL, I loved Rock/Hogan!

My vote goes for Hogan/Rock, and if that maakes me a mark, then good, I enjoy being a mark. Seriously though, the atmosphere and the historical importance was just off the charts. That'll make up for poor workrate any day.
Second place would be RVD/Guerrero ladder match.
Had WWE followed through with the Jericho push, I would have given the second place to Rock/Jericho from the Royal Rumble, as it would have been Jericho's big moment where he became a true main eventer, as it is, the match is great, albeit somewhat meaningless from a historical perspective.
Let's not forget that we still have 4 - 5 months left to go in the year, depending on whether or not you cound December.
I gotta' say I'm conflicted between Rock/Hogan, Rock/Jericho and Hair vs. Hair match at Judgment Day.
But, if I had to choose, I would say Rock/Hogan, as I taped that som un a bitch and it still gives me goosebumps to hear those people get so into that match.
I got two blips on my Ha-dar. Shoot 'em down!
The next time I hear you say "glass ceiling" or you complain about someone being shoved down their throats, I'm gonna take that glass ceiling and shove it down your throat.
I personally lover Rock and Hogan-- I just thought a lot of people would hate it because of Hogan (guess I was wrong). My jaw was dropped the whole match, most emotional match possibly ever. My friends who were watching it with me and I all got into that match more than any match ever. I think it could be a MOTY easily, but I could see some people complaining about the workrate hampering it.

No one was sitting at my friend's house at WrestleMania 18 during Rock vs. Hogan. We were going nuts with every punch. I saw the WMX ladder match, Hogan vs. Andre, Steamboat vs. Savage, but none of them compare to the atmosphere the Rock/Hogan match had. I can't remember a time where I was that into a match. It didn't matter if Hoagn was a great worker, it didn't matter who didn't like the Rock. That match to me is what being a fan is all about.
Rock vs. Hogan. The crowd reaction alone was like nothing I've ever seen before... I, just like a lot of you, was hanging on every punch or pose that Hogan did. I was eating it all up like it was Hogan/ Paul Orndorff back in the Saturday Night's Main Event days... back before internet spoilers and working 9-5. Man, that was a great, great moment!
Naked Mideon and Big Vis have been gone so long that I'm too jaded to even THINK anyone else can even HAVE a MOTYC.

OK, my MOTYCs since 12/01 (RSPW awards go from Dec to Nov, so that's what I go by.)
* 12/9/01 Vengeance ME I'm counting the whole unification tournament as a match -- Austin/Angle, Jericho/Rock, Jericho/Austin
12/13/01 SD! ME RVD+Rock/Jericho+Taker
12/17/01 Raw ME RVD/Jericho by DQ World Title (IMHO, Rock should have been in the rumble, and this feud should have continued to a title match at the Rumble PPV)
* 1/7/02 Raw Tazz+Spike/Dudleyz in Harcore Tornado for Tag titles
* 1/14/02 Raw Angle/Kane (Angle intros running superplex)
1/20/02 Rumble ME Royal Rumble
2/11/02 Raw RVD/Christian
* 3/17/02 WM Rock/Hogan (the people's ME)
3/17/02 WM Jazz/Lita/Trish Women's title triple threat
4/21/02 Backlash Tajiri/Kidman Cruiser title
* 4/25/02 SD! ME Jericho/HHH #1 contender. (Jericho counters Pedigree into backslide and Walls! IMHO, much better than their PPV confrontations.)
5/2/02 SD! ME Hogan/Jericho World title
5/9/02 SD! D-Von/HHH
* 5/13/02 Raw Hogan/Flair World title
Sadly, I missed most of JD, I suspect that Eddie/RVDII and Angle/EdgeII would be here.
* 5/20/02 Raw ME UT/RVD dusty finish World title
* 5/27/02 Raw ME RVD/Eddie IC Ladder
5/30/02 SD! ME Edge/Angle Cage
6/3/02 Raw ME Austin/Flair No punching stip
I also missed KOR, or I suspect that Angle/Hogan would be on this list.
* 7/1/02 Raw ME UT/Jeff Ladder World title
7/4/02 SD! Hogan+Edge/ Billy+Chuck
7/15/02 Raw Tommie/Stevie cane match (brutal!)
* 7/21/02 Vengeance Booker/Big Show I may be crazy, but I loved this match. Houston Hangover!!
7/21/02 Vengeance ME Rock/Angle/UT Triple threat World title
7/22/02 Raw ME Rock/Eddie
The starred matches are the ones I would consider all-time favorites. Definitely some good matches this year, by my taste, but nothing quite up there with Angle/Shane, Angle/Benoit-cage, TLCIII, or Austin/Benoit-SD! last year. However, last year was diamonds surrounded by crap. This year the quality has been a bit more even (by my taste).

that movie was pretty damn good (well minus certain parts that sucked monkey nipple) but it's good to hear about bret getting up and around again, and i think i speak for everyone when i say that i hope he gets better very soon.
