With teams passing on talents like Bell and Elliot instead of paying them, what do you guys think about the RB position as a whole?
It seems like since LaDanian Tomlinson on the RB position has gotten super devalued by NFL teams. Guys have 1-2 seasons where they are good and then its on to the next guy.
Is there anyone out there who will be the sustained next big thing at RB? Is it just over?
I was going to reply but I realized I was just regurgitating a twitter thread I read yesterday and its probably better to link to the source than paraphrase the ideas.
And now to paraphrase so I'm not just dropping links as my argument: I think its all about the OL now. Spend the money on your O-line and you can get by with weaker RB talent. Spend the money on RB and go with a weaker OL, and you'll have other problems. RB has always been a bit fungible and I think its getting moreso and moreso, but you're always going to have the pass-catching backs that get lots of attention. I have no idea who will be the next big thing but I imagine it will be a Darren Sproles type.
It's interesting his PFF era - I need to read up on that more. I am not as stats savvy with Football as I used to be with baseball. LT was near the end of his career in the timefram he calls PFF (2007-2018).
I've just been wondering about where has the next Shaun Alexander, CJ, or LT gone? Is the era of the star RB getting further and further behind us?
As a Chargers fan I knew Sproles was special. It's been interesting to watch his career. I think 20 years ago he never gets off the bench. Today they want to clone him.
I think you missed his point that he is just happy to see an unbiased ranking system out there. But you do have a point that it is Idaho and because of their conference I am pretty sure that they could win out and not make my top 25.
