WTF? I'm in the grocery store perusing the paperbacks when I a reprint of Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising. But underneath the title it says "A Jack Ryan Novel". I own this book and I can tell you that Jack Ryan isn't involved at all in this story! And unless I'm mistaken, there was never an actual war between NATO and the Soviet Union (which is what RSR is about) in the Jack Ryan universe. So how the hell did this book end up with a blatant lie on it's cover???

Sounds like your local grocery store is buying/selling some unauthorized copies of books.

The first copy of RSR that I bought was missing 50 of the last 100 pages....

There are some books that are in the Jack Ryan universe but don't include him. Like Rainbow Six where they talk about Ryan but never directly mention him by name.

RED STORM RISING is not one of those books. It's totally unrelated to the Jack Ryan universe in ANY WAY. Ryan is mentioned by name in EVERY OTHER Tom Clancy novel, including RAINBOW SIX.

From Clancyfaq.com, the official Tom Clancy FAQ website: "Red Storm Rising is not related to any of the other books. The storyline, characters, etc. from Red Storm Rising do not carry over into other books."

BTW, RED RABBIT, the penultimate (that means second to last, Scott Summets) Jack Ryan novel is due out August 5.

Hell yeah, I can't wait for the new book to come out. Clancy is my favorite author by far, and Jack Ryan is my favorite literary character. He was definitely not in RSR, however, and gets only cursory mention in Rainbow Six and Withour Remorse, although his dad is a big part in that one. Too bad there are only 2 more books, but there is not a lot left for Jack to do. He really has done it all, CIA, teacher at the Naval Academy, historian, Marine, National Security Adviser, Vice President, President.

Really... Red Rabbit is cool. And I actually didn't know what penultimate meant (don't know if I should be insulted or not by you mentioning the definition to me.) I don't remeber Ryan being mentioned by name in Rainbow Six... I remeber Chavez and Clark talking about a friend in a high place that was obviously Ryan though. BTW, the Politka series (Power Plays) and the Net series aren't in the Ryan saga are they? I have read most and he (or any other regulars) never appear.

Tom Clancy did not write those books, therefore they are not part of the Ryanverse. They are part of the Power Plays, OpCenter and NetForce series, respectively.

Steve Pieczenik (at first) and Jeff Rovin (later) write the OpCenter books.

Martin Greenberg (at first) and Jerome Preisler (later books) write the Power Plays Books

Steve Pieczenik (at first) and Steve Perry (later books) write NetForce.

Tom Clancy only created the concept for the above series of books. He has nothing else to do with them other than that.

Hahahahah! At times I do. I have a very good friend who makes most of the sarcastic/biting comments. He would have said exactly what you just did btw.

Well, it's not a fake copy, I think it's just a mistake. They've reissued all the paperbacks with new covers because of The Sum of all Fears movie. Yet, Red Storm Rising doesn't have a new cover on Amazon.com (I believe it was pulled when someone realized the error) yet the books still made it to the store.

Here's a pick of one of the covers, just imagine "Red Storm Rising" on it, and the background a dark red.

Yeah I am kind of curious what Ryan has left to accomplish. He is President. The U.S. is total butt buddies with Russia. The U.S. has whipped in the last "decade" Iraq, Japan, Iran/Iraq, and China. Unless there is some weird European alliance or India there isn't really any countries left for the U.S. to kick ass on. But Jack Ryan books are good well except for Rainbow Six.

The new book is a prequel. Set after PATRIOT GAMES but before HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER.

Odd of him, to set the book BETWEEN two other books.

On a side note, the whole "A Jack Ryan Novel" thing just looks kinda gay.

Actually, a lot of time passes between the end of PATRIOT GAMES and the beginning of RED OCTOBER. We go from Greer offering Jack a job to him being a full-on analyst. It's a rife time (setting wise) for development.

Also keep in mind PATRIOT GAMES was published AFTER RED OCTOBER, further complicating things. :)
