I don't get Impact anymore, but I saw a couple people making vague criticisms of the show. What actually happened?

The commentary was two hours of Borash and Josh sniping at each other. Josh isn't a good heel commentator, he's a Michael Cole heel commentator.

The show apparently came off like the primary goal was to bury Dixie Carter (just not by name) for pushing Jeff Jarrett out of power way back when, secondarily to give spots those people who were loyal or helpful to Jarrett when he tried to get GFW off the ground, and way down the list was trying to make an entertaining show. It's weird, because Dixie Carter is pretty disliked individual, but Jarrett's no peach either, and throwing the last few years of Impact under the bus only serves to annoy the fans who've stuck around them. (There are plenty of periods where Jeff was in control which were less well received than the last year of Impact.)

They've also adopted the Trump "Make America Great Again" slogan into their own "Make Impact Great" phrase. Even vaguely alluding to something political right now is going to upset people, that seems like a dumb idea.

Mostly though, it was a show with not a lot of good matches or things people wanted to see - unless you wanted to see Alberto show up and suddenly become the #1 guy in the promotion - with an awful soundtrack and the overall feel of a Vince Russo booked show. The Russo kind of TNA/Impact is the era that probably should be ripped, and relaunching with one that feels like he could've written it is popping the balloon before it's even filled with air. This was billed as a big step forward, and it's two big steps backwards. They can change the name, but it's still TNA.

It definitely feels as if Russo is back.

Pleased to see a final appearance by Smoking Joe Fraiser.

The Broken Hardyz appear to have been killed off via Decay hijacking their teleporter and becoming world champions off screen.

Decay with the Broken Universe powers is plausible, and a natural next stage of the saga. The titles are still cursed!

The whole set up this week felt very Immortal. I am pretty sure that they are setting up for the New Regime to be heels, with Josh Matthews, EC3, and Lashley as the babyfaces.

Possibly, the Broken Hardyz will be babyfaces too, assuming they are doing a Brian Pillman Worked-Shoot. Over the past month of Impact episodes, the Hardyz have been promising on screen that they would be jumping to RoH and WWE, and hating greedy promoters, so it is hard to tell what is real.

---

Impact has a new set, intro, and logo. I was expecting all of this back in January. Surprising having a season premiere in March. Nice historical montage.

Production values seem much higher. They even have the roster page back on their website! http://impactwrestling.com/roster (Which indicates that Detective Drew Galloway, Marti Bell, Rebel, Commissioner Music Guy's Henchman Aiden O'Shea, Tigre Uno, Chris Melendez, Micah, Basil Baraka, Baron Dax, and Mandrews have all also been deleted by the New Regime. Jarrett allegedly is not back.)

"Heel" Josh has been being bullied by Pope and the New Regime for the past month or so, so I am guessing Russo has been "consulting" for at least that long.

Josh also had an orange handkerchief. Taz?

For some reason Cody has the GFW Next Gen belt. He spent the show challenging Moose. Moose is allegedly in Japan. In a recent show Moose called out Cody, despite Cody not being supposed to be there. That time Cody was there. This time Moose wasn't.

A new tag team beat DCCC. "Reno Scum" also had tag titles. Perhaps this played into Decay's master plan to delete the Broken Hardyz. Reno Scum might also have teleported into TNA due to the Broken Hardyz spending the past month or two teleporting back and forth between minor and major wrestling territories around the globe.

1. Reno Scum defeated Kingston and Bram (w/James Storm)

The referees are now in blue shirts. The fans for some reason are wearing Make America Great Again hats. During the New Regime segments, the New Regime has been using "Make Impact Great" as their catchphrase. This is consistent with the first episode of Impact in January this year, where Pope opened the show by saying that. Pope being a New Regime minion is ironic, as he was an early rebel against Immortal during the last time they succeeded in taking over.

New announcer McKenzie Mitchell interviewed Sienna. Sienna claimed that the contract issues of Maria was "fake news", and that Maria was only gone due to a nervous breakdown. Alie and Main Eventer Heartthrob Braxton Sutter broke up the wedding of Maria's dreams a couple of weeks ago. As part of Maria's breakdown, Bachelor Party Cool Dude, The Miracle Mike Bennett also has been deleted.

2. Braxton Sutter (w/Allie) defeated Marshe Rockett (w/ Beat Down Clan music), Caleb Konley, and DJZ in a four-way.

During the match Josh Matthews reminds us that he was almost the first X-Division Champion.

Afterwards Laurel Van Ness came out to cry about Braxon not marrying her. Laurel is still in her wedding dress.

Incidentally, the only blackmail Maria had against Braxton was that she was going to fire Alie unless Braxton married Laurel. Maria did fire Laurel, so I guess if she disappears from Impact now, we can blame Maria for not keeping her on the payroll.

3. Sienna defeated Rachel Ellering.

Segment with New Regime authority figure Bruce Prichard. They finally point out that the world champion was the former handpicked wrestler of the President of the United States. Alberto Del Rio debuts. EC3 doesn't like that a new guy is getting a titleshot without earning one.

The Davey v. Eddie feud continues.

New Regime authority figure Dutch Mantell shows up and reminices about the Big Stars from the Main Event Mafia and Immortal eras. He wants to Make Impact Great Again.

The Broken Hardyz had their final battle with Smoking Joe Fraiser (who is in the body of a kangaroo) at Egyptian Matt (the King in Gold)'s personal zoo. They announce that the Seven Dieties are sending them after another title, and teleport away, but it looks as if Decay hijacked their teleporter and deleted the Hardyz and Vangaurd 1, and somehow have wound up with the belts.

4. TNA Tag Team Championship: Decay (Abyss and Crazzy Steve w/ Knockouts Champion Rosemary) appear to have defeated the Broken Hardy Boyz (King In Gold Matt Hardy and Brother Nero) (c) off-screen to become the new Greatest Tag Team In All of Space and Time

Steve remarks, "Thanks for the ride, you bucket of bolts."

5. TNA World Heavyweight Championship: Alberto El Patron defeated Bobby Lashley (c) via a belt-shot to become the new champion.

EC3 is dismayed.

The show was horrible if the New Regime are supposed to be babyfaces. But if they're heels, it was a fantastic season premiere.

Rumor is Jarrett considered bringing Vince Russo back but chose Bruce Pritchard instead for the very scientific reason that his podcast gets more downloads. Oy. I guess it's good that Vince isn't back but that's a pretty dumb way to make decisions.

Yeah, this was bad. Like, practically no silver linings bad. Last time we had a big TNA discussion was back when Corgan was trying to buy them out and I was surprisingly positive on them, particularly with how strongly they had booked Lashley, paying off on the strides he's made on finally becoming the guy everyone hoped he would be years ago.

Almost immediately - like, possibly that same week - they tanked the Lashley angle. The payoff to Lashley crushing the whole company and unifying all the belts was stripping him of the X-Division title, retiring his King of the Mountain Title, introducing (rather randomly) a new rounds-based title he didn't have and then having him lose the world title to Eddie Edwards in kind of a fluke. All that build for nothing and for Lashley to get it back (after multiple attempts to reclaim it, including a fight at the Hardy compound) and then...lose it (maybe?) right away to Alberto.

Booking around this time also included a 5000% increase in Maria and Mike Bennett content, and Bennett came across like the Least Essential Wrestler In The World during the whole thing. They also introduced the latest in TNA's favorite flavor: a heel faction determined to take over the company, this time the DCC, which started off as some kind of weird, at least potentially interesting spin on Anonymous, only to be revealed as...drunken cowboy James Storm, Bram and debuting Eddie Kingston, none of whom fit the gimmick or with each other (and all of whom would end up getting beaten repeatedly by a - to be fair, surprisingly not terrible and seems like he actually works hard - ex-reality show contestant who used to do and maybe still kinda does a Jersey shore gimmick.)

Top that off with losing the Hardys (who were in a lull but were still the best reason to tune in while waiting to see if Matt was ready for his next big play) and Galloway (who had, I think been the best booked guy behind Lashley, and like Lashley, someone who I thought was vastly more interesting now than in his WWE days), having Sandow be a truly stunning mega-bomb, Cody's intermittent presence, ECIII going on the back-burner and Edwards' title reign mostly flopping and transitioning into an instant channel-change, ludicrous blood feud with Davey Richards and yeah, the show was in bad shape coming into this.

And still somehow got kinda worse. To say Josh is a Heel Cole is a disservice to Heel Cole, who was at least fun at the start. Booking your announce team to fight each on air for two hours of a relaunch show is one of the dumbest things I can think of doing. Alberto coming in, mostly shrugging at everything and immediately (kinda, sorta, still up in the air?) beating Lashley was dumb.

They got zero juice out of writing out Maria/Bennett (Maria died on the way back to her home planet, Bennett didn't even get a mention, fittingly) or the Hardys (Decay did...something... and somehow got the belts...or something...it seriously made no sense, and not in the delightful Hardy way).

And an insane amount of TV time was filled up with old carnies coming out and trying to work the audience with their shtick. Pritchard and Dutch basically did two variations on the same speech (TNA was good once, when I was here, but was bad now, before I was here again), with Pritchard's way more self-serving and pointless (I've met Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin and my podcast!) and Dutch's tied up too much in "Remember Zeb Colter?" and then getting hand that weird "You know who else left? YOU!" to fans who, you know, hadn't actually left. Seeing them both reminded me of Cornette and Russo and the rest of them and how none of them quite get how to do what Paul Heyman does. Heyman is just as much a carny as they are and tells the same quasi-revisionist, self-serving stories, no doubt. But the difference, and it's a massivedifference that none of them (or, presumably, Jarrett) get: while going into business for himself, Heyman always remembers not to tear down the actual product. Sure, he sells you that it's better with him (or Brock or whatever he's selling at the moment), but he doesn't do it after spending 15 minutes undermining the very thing you were already watching. All of those guys - and I'd take it up as far as Jarrett's apparent role model HHH at his worst - could do with learning that. You can make more money assuring people that what they're going to get is going to be better without insulting them for already having consumed what they were getting.

This episode to me can be summed up in one instance: During Prichard's promo, he comes out and says "TNA is Dead", and immediately follows that up by bringing out Lashley, with title around waist, with TNA still very prominently displayed on the front and the sides of the title.

I enjoyed the last year or so of TNA enough to loosely follow for the last year. This show and the taping reports on what's to follow are depressing and exactly the sort of thing I don't want to see. I can't think of a reason to keep watching, I don't think The Decay will be enough for me, so I'm out until things change or until we get another Death of TNA thread.

That is my favorite tweet of the entire year thus far and I might actually consider buying the t-shirt it inspired which is more than I can say about any shirt that the WWE has produced in the last decade.

Well, you know...

I am waiting to see a chicken salad promo on Impact.

Let me rephrase that. I'm waiting to see them put a chicken salad promo on Impact so I have something to bother looking up on Youtube the next day because I won't be watching Impact.
