LOVE Owens. Love Owens being champ. Hate that distracting, leathery eyesore he had to hold onto at the end.

The belt is ugly, too.

Interesting that they played it as Kevin Owens shocked at it and not realizing why it happened. That opens up multiple ways for them to go forward -- always a good thing when there's more than one potential road for fans to wonder about.

But that statement in itself is the problem with WWE programming. The "how" used to matter and used to define the character and make them more 'fleshed out'. Steve Austin had to defeat Vince and The Corporation. Hogan had to overcome Communism and a plethora of 'foreign threats'. Ricky Steamboat overcame a career ending injury from Randy Savage to reclaim his title in one of the greatest matches ever. Looking back at all the great storylines in WWF history, the HOW mattered a lot. The HOW in this case puts a lot on a guy who wrestles once a year and is known for his 20 minute promos. And if people truly won't remember, then why even bother with the show? Just pick guys you really like and hand them the belt.

Which is basically what they did here, and it's one time where I'm more or less okay with it. Could it have been done better (that is to say, correctly)? Absolutely. But this whole thing is a quick-fix solution to Finn's injury. It's not going to come at the culmination of a month's long story. HHH doesn't need to be involved on TV anymore, and I'm not arguing that, but Owens winning clean here isn't functionally any different than what we actually got. Well, at least to me, and at least on this one occasion. It's a big reset button no matter how you look at it.

So another HHH-Stephanie drama takes center stage, at least in the short term. If they just slide Owens into the role of Authority champ held previously by Orton and Rollins, I'm going to be a lot less inclined to watch.

7 year old me didn't care how Savage got his first title, 35 year old me doesn't care how Owens got his. As I said, I understand the frustration but I will argue that the moment meant more because of how it all went down. Owens pins Rollins clean? Sure, good win. But it leaves a whole lot of shit in the air re: Rollins/Steph/HHH/Reigns relationship that the same people complaining about this would also complain about "stories that go nowhere". A valid sentiment but given the circumstances, this was a superb creative recovery. Now, if we go straight to Corporate KO then my optimism is misguided. At the very least, they got me to want to watch next week instead of having it on as background habit noise.

Geez, a lot of people are forgetting how Foley won his first title.

I want to take a bold stance and say it's OK to be both happy Mr. Kevin Owens got a promotion at his workplace and wish the creative powers of WWE were far more creative.

(KO only has to hold the belt 365 more days to catch up to tattoo amigo The Rock.)

I have no comment here, I just wanted to make sure you saw this twice.

Everyone left posting here is so very old and dying off, so maybe it's Alzheimer's kicking in. But! I think the issue is Foley winning that title was one of the first times someone else essentially won the belt for the champion, and this is the seventhy billion time they've done this bit.

The silver lining of the horrendous Road To WrestleMania is that maybe they were finally done with the Corporate Champion bit for a long time, as it had been run into the ground and they had no new ideas. A long time appears to have lasted 6 months. That's no good. It's no good that (outside of Owens beating Cass), no one's finishers seemed to actually work but Triple H's finish killed two guys without a problem.

(If Seth kicks out of the Pedigree, and Kevin finishes Seth himself with a powerbomb, it's better for New Face Seth Rollins and better for New Champion Kevin Owens, and only worse for Non-Wrestler Triple H. I'd guess they think they're saving that kickout for the Triple H/Rollins match six months from now (???), but maybe the better guess is they think Triple H is the biggest star so no way is anyone kicking out of his move.)

This was the two universes of Triple H colliding. NXT Dad Triple H, Too Sweet-ing new signee Kevin Owens, meets Sledgehammer Triple H, the best guy at making sure he's the best guy in the room. Or, alternatively, this is Sledgehammer Triple H revealing himself to be there all along, and people talked themselves into some change because he's a nice guy in interviews and he's credited for the wrestling product they like.

One could build a non-negligible list of babyfaces that won their first WWE World title with someone else's help. That list includes, Savage, Foley and Eddie. But Kevin Owens: Headlock Master isn't a babyface.

I can safely call myself an old-timer. Back in *my* day, we would've said "don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

What the hell was that Stephanie/Heyman promo? Were they both being sarcastic? That was infuriatingly nonsensical.

As far as the Owens/HHH/Rollins thing goes, I'm mixed although not happy to see HHH again in the main storyline. WWE has lost the complete benefit of the doubt with me whenever HHH is involved in anything on Raw.

...BUUUUT Raw needs a top babyface with Balor out and that's going to be Seth Rollins. As I've been saying since Rollins' return, he can only turn babyface against HHH because that's been the plan since before he got injured last year and WWE isn't so great with changing their plans.

Balor's injury accelerated their plans with Rollins in a very patchwork way. Owens shouldn't have won clean (though he did get the only clean pinfall in the match on Cass), so I wasn't bothered by him taking the opportunity HHH gave him. That's what Owens does. He goes for the gold to feed his family.

What bothered me was HHH just laying out both Reigns and Rollins with one Pedigree, and taking his shameless NXT poses now onto mainstream WWE TV.

But, hey, Rollins may now get the chance to be the top star on Raw. I'm at least interested in seeing where their main event storyline goes now.

Still won't watch all three hours, though.

He will always be this Triple H. From Click Here (ign.com) in 2008

WWE told the video game press that they could not show any screenshots of the Superstars bleeding or using weapons. Additionally, WWE said in their memo that they aren't allowed to show screenshots of digital Triple H "in a defenseless or vulnerable position."

The Mrs. and I were there last night. After her initial sadness of not seeing The Miz or Cena, Jericho's appearance made her night.

If you think those squashes play bad on TV, they're even worse in person.

The crowd REALLY wanted Cass to win, but once he went out, became fairly split. At about 10 minutes before the end of the main, I noticed a group of guys in suits move near the entrance where HHH came out. I had a feeling a run-in was coming, but never expected what we got. The crowd popped HUGE when Owens won.

KO must now love Houston. Won his first IC title here, too.

Well, let's look at it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KybuIy0wKXk

So Foley, who got betrayed by Vince and The Corporation into thinking he was their corporate champion, wanted revenge on them and on the champion (The Rock) who was part of the deception and was the antithesis of what Foley was as a wrestler. They have a match where The Corporation is out there to interfere so DX evens the odds. Foley HAS THE ROCK BEAT, but Shamrock hits him with the chair. Stone Cold (the biggest star the WWE has seen at the time) comes out, hits his long time nemesis with a chair and gives his friend the title, while also giving a HUGE F-U to his other longtime rival. Everyone comes out looking great, a tremendous story is told and they obviously went from there with different storylines with compelling characters.

What happened last night was a guy who had zero connection to the ongoing storyline interject himself into a match that didn't need him and put himself over and made one of the main talking points coming out of evening about him. Even if that is his only appearance, then it reeks of HHH showing off his manhood, just cause he can. Think of it this way: How much better would that have been if Chris Jericho played the HHH role?

Look, this could all come out very well. I sincerely hope I'm wrong. But nothing this company has done lately makes me think this isn't going to end with "Corporate Owens" and some match with HHH in the main event of WM 33.

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

They really wanted a new top face for RAW. They are going with Rollins it looks like. But if they really wanted a megastar face, they could of gone with that ending and right when HHH was handing Owens the belt, pop up powerbomb out of nowhere. They crowd was already poping for the moment and they would of exploded for that. Throw in a double bird at Trips and you got your new Stone Cold for the next 5 years.

And I called for Corporate Owens earlier this year. Guess we'll see if I was right.
