W's, you have let me down. My wife and I FINALLY catch up on Mr. Robot, and I come expecting to find some discussion of the confirmation that Elliot was in prison, or more debate about what Ray was up to (I HATE YOU CRAIG ROBINSON FOR MAKING ME TRUST YOU AND THEN BREAKING THAT ONLY TO WIN IT BACK LETTING ELLIOT LEAVE WHEN HE WON AT CHESS!), or discussion about the sitcom-opening (ALF RAN OVER GIDEON! I hope we never see Gideon again because that is the BEST way to write an actor out of a show!) and instead I get nothing since the third episode. Hopefully, we can fix that as we close out the season these next few weeks.

HOLY SHIT this episode was bleak. I can't believe that fsociety would be so distracted that they wouldn't catch Susan returning (well, I can believe it, but c'mon! They should know better!) And I knew that the only resolution was to kill her. I had a feeling someone was going into that pool, and I totally thought it would be Trenton when she was cutting Susan out to go to the bathroom. But Darlene did what she needed to do, and we got a great bit of exposition about her relationship to her father and E-Corp along the way.

Angela singing Everybody Wants to Rule the World felt a bit on the nose. She's been super cold this season. She didn't need to ream her neighbor a new one, even if he was being a dick to begin with. His anger made sense, coming from a place of betrayal, but she fought back with the tenacity she's been using to thrive a E-Corp. I'm not sure what her endgame is in the Risk Management Department, and it seems she may have marginalized herself, but she'll claw her way out. I worry that she's going to go too far to the dark side and wind up becoming Elliot's main nemesis at E-Corp before this is over.

From earlier episodes:
I loved the quick cuts of Mr. Robot taking the punches for Elliot when the white gang was beating him up. Did NOT expect Leon to make the save there. Was he watching Elliot for the Dark Army or was he just aware of them (and White Rose?)

So White Rose is also the Chinese Minister of State Security? That's suprisingly high ranking to also be running the Dark Army... or is the implication that the Dark Army is state funded? I loved the scene with him (her?) talking with Dom about the clocks and the clothes.

Dom is the most compelling character. I love how they casually introduced her focusing on her interactions in the coffee shop and on her personal life, only to narrow the focus to her investigation. Now that Elliot's out, I look forward to more of a direct confrontation between them. Of course, she has to get past focusing on Angela ("what that the contact?" I loved how hopeful she got for that!) and Wellick for the real actors.

And speaking of Wellick... he can't really be dead, right? We need to find out what happened over those three days. We still don't know what Joanna's friend that she murdered knew. Or what she sees in that lame-ass DJ. At some point she's got to emerge as a figure to be dealt with.

If Wellick is dead... could he become a third personality to join Mr. Robot and Elliot fighting for head space? He seems to be alive sending Joanna gifts and Mr. Robot put Elliot on the phone with him, but, well, we know that we can't trust anything that Elliot sees.

DUDE

Starting threads for the show got away from me. The show is on at a bad time on a bad night. And some of the super-sized eps were too long. By the time my wife and I got around to watching, it was usually Sunday or Monday of the following week. Then I couldn't find time to write something. Next thing you know, the next episode was on. Ugh. At least you managed to get us a thread icon.

Random, jumbled thoughts:

The sitcom opening was incredible. The opening credits, the old school USA Network logo, the commercials! Imagine if it was Seinfeld.

WHO IS RAY??? I’m assuming he’s the prison warden. I know it probably doesn’t matter, but it’s killing me. I love how the chess game came full circle. Elliot is incapable of beating himself at chess (a game suggested by Ray), but when it mattered, Elliot had to show he could be beat Ray himself. My other big question about Ray is why did he let Elliot go back to work on the website after the beatings? At this point, Ray had to know what was going to happen.

Angela installing the master/slave device with Darlene's voice in her ear was way too similar to Elliot installing the Raspberry Pi last season with Mr. Robot's voice in his ear. So similar that I very briefly entertained the thought that Angela and Darlene are not two different people. I know this is impossible, but it didn't stop me from thinking it.

Angela is interesting because I can't put my finger on what her ultimate goal is. She rationalizes her current actions by saying she's trying to promote positive change from inside the company. That's a good way to lie to yourself and to make yourself comfortable with working for the devil. Looking forward to how she progresses, and I agree that an adversarial matchup with Elliot is in the future.

The most interesting relationship is Price and Whiterose. Actually, Price and anyone else is interesting, but Whiterose moreso. I don’t know if they’re truly partners or if one is playing the other. The attack in China threw a monkeywrench in Price’s bailout...poorly timed coincidence, or planned that way? Whiterose appears to definitely have a plan for Elliot...I believe Leon is a Dark Army soldier whose job was to protect Elliot.

The Wellicks...I can’t even. I don’t know what to think about what’s going on with them.

Two things:
1) I don't think Ray is a prison hallucination. I think Elliot was jailed after the DOJ/FBI nabbed him leaving Ray's place.

2) I think Ray saw Elliot as his way of getting out of the black market. He knew Elliot would call the feds, and he wanted it. The site wasn't designed to become what it did, and he was finally tired of being involved.

Elliot was in "prison" since ep 1, before he got on the terminal in Ray's office. Given that Ray had an office and access to a sub-basement, as well as how he broke up the scuffle between Leon and the ball player when they didn't give the ball back, I'd say he was a prison guard. I assume the dog was K-9 unit. We don't know how Elliot wound up there in the first place.

Agreed on your second point about Ray's motivations, though.

This show needs to be careful. An unreliable narrator is one thing, but scenes like Elliot getting abducted and cement poured down his throat or making prison look like his Mom's house can start to let everything get out of hand. Before the end we'll suspect that EVERYONE is in Elliot's head. Then again, maybe this all ends with Elliot's actions leading to nuclear winter, and as the snow falls, we pan out and Elliot is just looking into a snowglobe.

ON DEMAND ONLY LISTED UP TO THE 9/7 EPISODE SO I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE TWO PART FINALE HYPE INTENSIFIES!!!

(also, I didn't make the Mr. Robot icon. Thanks to the mod who did!)
