Imagine if WWE signed a world-renowned super-duper mega star, say Shinsuke Nakamura for argument’s sake, likely paying him a boatload of money. But instead of capitalizing on his stardom and getting your money’s worth by having him interact with John Cena and Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns, they keep in the B-league for an extended period of time, interacting with Elias Samson*. Oh, that’s actually happening you say? Ok, well now imagine that instead of having Nakamura knocking people out with his deadly knee, they had him hosting a weekly talk show segment. That’s kind of what I felt like when watching Ian McShane playing Game of Throne’s version of The Walking Dead’s Morgan. And his character was killed off just as quickly as it was introduced.

Even if I’m sour on how McShane was used (hey, maybe we’ll see Bran interact with him in the past?), I won’t let it overshadow the return of THE HOUND! That was unexpected, and the cold open (!) reveal took me completely by surprise. The Hound conveys to McShane’s Brother Ray his guilt over his past bad acts, while Brother Ray (a former bad man himself) talks about the need to cure the disease known as violence. Then, when a band of extorters slaughters Ray and the rest of his group, The Hound looks like he has violent intentions as he sets off to hunt down the killers. So, the point of this was...? I know, let's see how it plays out.

The episode’s very limited (and shortened) screentime was basically dominated by The Hound's reintroduction and the trio of Sansa, Jon and Davos trying to recruit houses for the attack against Ramsay. And that was pretty unsuccessful, as it turns out that the Stark name doesn’t carry the weight they thought it did. But hey, they got a measly 62 troops from 10-year old Lyanna Mormont, but ONLY after Davos starts warning about the White Walkers. Lyanna’s initial resistance to Jon and Sansa is pretty confusing, considering she told Stannis last season to pound sand and reaffirmed House Mormont’s loyalty to the Starks when he asked her for troops.

So, yeah, that was what the episode was mostly about, with some annoying and brief check-ins to some other places:

-Margaery convinces Olenna to escape King’s Landing (using a secret note with the House Tyrell sigil to convey that she is faking her alignment with the Faith) before the High Sparrow can start talking to Olenna about sins that need to be confessed.

-Jaime and Bronn (!) arrive at Riverrun to watch Walder Frey’s incompetent men fail at getting the Blackfish to surrender. If you listed out all the ways to get the Blackfish to surrender, threatening Edmure Tully would be dead last. Anyway, Jaime also fails when he tries verbal threats. And now we must fight.

-Yara tries to get Theon find his (figurative) balls as they try to get to Dany and secure her partnership before Euron can. God, shut up, Yara.

-Finally, Arya, after securing passage out of Braavos, gets stupidly gets herself stabbed by the Waif. I mean, seriously? Something is not as it seems, because Arya is not dumb enough to get taken by surprise the way she did. This has to be a ploy to convince Jaqen that the assassination worked. But it sure seemed like that Arya (or someone that looks like Arya?) is bleeding out while stumbling down the streets of Braavos.

There were some cool and funny isolated moments, but this was not my favorite episode.

*I know Elias Samson is the least fair comparison to The Hound, but when you know that *Ian McShane* has signed onto the show to NOT interact with Tyrion or Cersei or Dany or Jon Snow, it feels like a letdown.

Yep, they wasted McShane. His character was cool too. The return of the Hound is the big thing from this week. If it leads to him vs Darth Mountain, ok then. If not, its a waste for him as well. Yara is perfectly fine and smart enough to use Euron's plan against him. Theon's info on Ramsey and the North maybe more valuable than the ships.

God Damn, the hunt for help was annoying. They shouldn't have to beg for help if the option is crazy Ramsay or these guys. The last guy pissed me off. Where was Robb?! Dying thanks to the guy you are algiened with now. Sansa going back to doing stupid things is almost a deal breaker. The stall tactics for the Starks are getting to Danny level.

I believe I had Arya being in the most amount of danger. I did love Blackfish pissing on Jamie's honor. Queen Marge maybe the only redeeming part of this High Sparrow storyline. She is going to take Tommen out to become Queen and destroy the Sparrows or turn the masses on the High Sparrow when she says that she can't perform her duties do to the High Sparrow raping her. Olenna is just awesome. Redgrave gives her depth and energy that is not in the books.

Ian McShane only signed on because he had hoped to work with Charles Dance or Stephen Dillane, but since they were both killed off, he agreed to stay on because it was only 1 episode.

Eh, it is what it is with Ian McShane. If he can't do more or won't do more, then at least give him a great one-off, which is what this was. It was a very effective reintroduction to The Hound and McShane put over his return well.

That is hilarious. "Hey Charles, guess what, I'm going to be on your show! We'll get to chew some scenery together like old times!" "Uh, Ian...."

George Michael weighed his options. Maeby had chastised him for not taking risks, and what would be a bigger risk than perpetuating a lie about software just to ignite the passions of a woman? Of course it would be a lie, and since Maeby wouldn't know it was a lie, he wouldn't appear to be taking a risk. Perhaps the bigger risk was to tell his father he was lying, that he came up with it because he wanted his father to leave so he could enjoy what remained of his senior year. After all, he wondered, wouldn't that be the course of action taken by an overtly sexual man, a man who owns a pair of matador pants? He had not responded now for 41 seconds according to his unfailing internal clock, and it was time to come clean.

I so enjoyed McShane. I thought he was perfect for what he was about and if in fact he did sign for only one episode, what better way to bring the Hound back. Would be have been better as one of the Harpies? or perhaps a Dothraki? Actually, a Dothraki would have been cool. and then the Dragon could eat him.

We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

What show were Dance and McShane on together? Dance wasn't on deadwood, - I see them together in some movie, in minor parts - did I miss something?

Dance, McShane and Dillane all worked together in the theatre, from what I've read.
